I came here already over…read morethirty years ago (pfff, no, don't do the math), back when it was only a type of glorified café/restaurant, and our dogs were welcome and would lay under the table while we were enjoying game that was hunted locally (sometimes by my then husband), and delivered from the local butcher shop. They were always respected for their authentic way of cooking foods, prepared with diligence and French finesse. I have not had a bad meal in all the years we have eaten there. They always make you feel special and have a lovely selection of wines and cocktails. This last time we sat next to the window to the kitchen: really fun as an aspiring cook to see how they run it. Plates were lined up and partially prepped. One of the more exclusive places around the Hoge Veluwe that I highly recommend. Enjoy your lunch, dinner or drinks!

It far and away exceeded my hopes of finding good food in an area we knew little about. I enjoyed a lovely Trappist Beir. It was a wonderful start to the best meal I've had in 20 years of visiting the Nederlands. We shared the Duck Pate (Marbre van eendenbout, eendeniever, pruimenchutney, Aceto balsamico and brioche). It was fantastic. Absolutely Fantastic!!! Then we moved onto the Rump Steak with Frites (Dun gesneden rumpsteak van de houtskool BBQ, huisgemaakte frieten, seizoensgroenten en rodewijnsaus). The steak was excellent. Wonderfully tender with an outstanding sauce. To be totally honest though, the star of the meal though it was all perfect were the Frites. The absolute best frites I've had in all of Europe and the World. So crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. Having the skin on set them so far above all the others with that added flavor I love from the skin. The meal is worth traveling 100 miles for. It will be a must go back to place for me on my next visit. Even if I have to rent a car and drive myself.

Because as far as snack bars go, this one is my preferred location (of the 3 in our village) but that is mostly because they have the nice and sweeter peanut sauce--which I like but does not represent the 'official' version of the Indonesian peanut sauce--it is probably just the kid in me that likes it. So why do I dare to judge? I ate the fried half chicken the other day, as a salute to the Dutch 'vette hap' or fat bite, as us Dutchies call fast food--a much better translation of its content, I cannot help but feel. And if it had been decently fried, I would have given them four stars, but unfortunately the chef cooked it way too long and sometimes it felt like I was chewing on a piece of jerky: way too hard, still a tiny little bit of chicken taste left. Whereas we had requested he fry the french fries longer, and he didn't. Of course, you can always get the old and trustworthy coffee and applepie (from frozen but not bad ;0) and not worry about the food. Maybe this is the way the new chef operates, as I did not recognize him from before, but I hope the old one comes back so I can update this review.

And we have also enjoyed many sit down dinners here with our 2 boys, after soccer matches and fun weekend days (when I had no more energy left to cook after all the running around ;0). The menu is very basic Italian with fried calamari and salads, but their pizzas are, and hopefully always will be, rather outstanding. Nice thin bottom crust, really fresh toppings, they accommodate any particular request. We like this Italian diner, and when the old owner graces our table to ask how we enjoyed our dinners, the only thing we can say is: Grazie, tutti era delizioso!
