What a fun little Amsterdam find! First things first: reservations are HIGHLY recommended. Seating…read moreis only on the hour, starting at noon, and this place is tiny. We're talking just four tables, with only two that can seat a party of four. They'll consider walk-ins at opening if there's room, but I wouldn't chance it. Then there's the setting. Funky, quirky, cozy, and packed with wonderfully random decorations. Like teapots and cups on the ceiling. And yes, you really do go upstairs...very steep stairs! Definitely something to know if mobility is an issue. But let's talk PANCAKES! We ordered four for our table of four--two savory and two sweet--which was WAY too much food, but OMG, they were incredible. Huge, thin, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. The tiny kitchen can only cook two pancakes at a time, which somehow just adds to the charm. Prices were surprisingly reasonable, too. Just don't dally--you have your table for an hour, and then it's time for the next lucky group to climb those stairs. Would I go back? HECK YA! We barely scratched the surface of the menu, and there are plenty more pancakes calling my name. Friendly staf

When we arrived and hiked upstairs, yes it's a hike straight up steep stairs, only to see the sign "fully booked" womp womp. HOWEVER, we asked if there was a waiting list because we didn't realize reservations are basically necessary. WE GOT LUCKY as a table was available because someone didn't show for their reservations!! We ordered the special of the day, blueberry & cream, and a bacon, cheese and apple pancake. Quickly cooked up and served and boy were they both delicious! I also didn't know it was a cash only establishment or debit card. Whom I presume was the owner was so sweet and again luckily our US credit card could be processed as debit. Saved me from having to do dish duty! Definitely a must do in Amsterdam but make a reservation and carry cash! Also to note, they only have 4 tables and if you're more than 5 minutes late for your reservation they may have given away your table!

There is a great playground outside with quaint Anton Pieck inspired buildings, and the decorations inside are amazing. You can even book a moving table. It can be a bit scary for little kids because of the theme and the witches all over the place. The Dutch pancakes are different from those of most other countries, they are big and flat, and can be either savory or sweet. At Hans & Grietje they're tasty, there is a special children's pancake with some candy and a little treat and for those with an allergy or intolerance they'll bake special ones. We love to come here with the grandkids.

My great friend and I were in Utrecht for a couple of days and decided to rent bikes and join the crowd and bike all around town. I had heard of this legendary pancake house in the woods and after a little bit of research realized it would make the perfect bike excursion for the two of us. So, we got all fitted and fixed up on our rental bikes and wearing NO helmets, started GPSing our way out of downtown, headed for the Theehuis Rhijnauwen. It wasn't too bad getting to the entrance to the forest, only a few close scrapes, but once we crossed over, we were biking in the open air with the most beautiful green spaces surrounding us. The rest of the ride was pretty fantastic. We saw friends biking in parallel sync, chatting away, and only wished that I was able to master my bicycle enough to do that too. Anyway, we arrived soon enough and found a spot to lock up our bikes. The place was hopping, but we got a table outside pretty easily. We were looking out on the greenest grassy field with two mini donkeys prancing around on a grassy knoll. The ONLY downside was that I had pre-ordered a tea service for the two of us, which was not great food-wise. I watched so many plates of big pancakes pass by longingly. Our tea service food was a lot of ok sweets and some salami, and then more sweets. Oof. On the other hand, there was no way I was going to let the disappointment of the food ruin the overall magic. Every time I looked over at one of those mini Dutch donkeys prancing around, they winked right back at me.
