The food was amazing, the staff and owners super friendly. The space was clean and fun to look at. But how they prepped the food was a chef's kiss!I ordered it and went and picked it up (call if you can Uber has issues at times). I was near by so I waited which isn't an issue for me, I knew I was there early. I ordered the chicken teriyaki plate and a spicy tuna roll. Do yourself favor and get the house dressing. It is amazing! The food was super fresh and delicious. I love that the salad came in its own container too many places plate it with and warm salad is just gross. The chicken was so good and the sushi was good too! Nice and spicy so I didn't need to use all of my wasabi. I will definitely eat back and looking forward to trying more 9; their food! read more

If you're looking for sushi, go elsewhere. They don't even sell it. Food continues to decline every time I order. The tiny side of teriyaki sauce they provide you with (additional for an outrageous charge) is just sugary thick syrup that vaguely tastes like teriyaki sauce. read more

This will be my last review of J's... they are dead to me officially now. I've actually come back twice since my last review, hoping they would figure it out and fix some of the issues, but they haven't done anything except raise prices yet again. The C-7 I always ordered has now, incredibly, jumped from $15.45 to $17.75 (was $10.95 a few years ago) and their food quality has continued to decline. Clearly this place has become a money grab for the new ownership, who BTW will only allow you to have one tiny teriyaki sauce cup per order, even at those prices. Sad... very sad! I don't eat sushi but apparently they don't even sell sushi anymore, so it's pretty clear they are heading in the wrong direction and I highly doubt they will be in business much longer. We were in town to purchase a car. It was late and we were hungry and wanted sushi. This was the only place open that served it. We weren't expecting much, but we were pleasantly surprised at the amazing sushi we received here. The service was great. The food tasted amazing, and it was well worth the price. New owners ---- just as good Came in here tonight and ordered the chicken gyoza. my Friend got the tofu teriyaki and they put in extra vegetables. Yum A couple from Albany own the restaurant. Which I love because I am as well. I didn't get her name but she was very accommodating and nice. My food was great the gyoza was fresh. My friend loved her tofu with veggies instead of the typical slabs of Tofu you get. They cut up the tofu in smaller Pieces and it can out firm and flavorful. Chicken Beef Gyoza Combination/. This restaurant serves the best teriyaki by far. I have personally ventured to many NW teriyaki places to discover one of the best I've ever had. Comparable to Mom's Teriyaki in Seattle--which no longer exists. I would have loved to have tried other dishes and will venture back very soon. Staff is friendly, the location is new and spotless and of course I was blown away by the quality of the freshly cooked meal. Staff and the owner were very professional on a busy graduation night even though we had a big group. The food was on another level. Short ribs were well marinated/seasoned also great portion size. The best teriyaki we've had in a while! Would love if they added a tofu option to their noodles but the veggie option was packed with well cooked veggies. We also got a California roll that was fresh and a good appetizer. The ice tea was especially good also - Thai tea maybe? Oh, and my husband gives five stars to the teriyaki sauce, and the fact that he got a bottle at the table to add as much as he wanted (he's a tough teriyaki critic so this is a glowing recommendation ). The food quality was good, just that I ordered teriyaki and I found it far too sweet. It didn't taste anything like teriyaki as I know it. The broth wasn't very flavorful and was a little too hot for my taste, but was comforting on a chilly day nonetheless. I haven't had udon at any of the other Japanese places in town, so can't compare to anywhere else local. Definitely not bad especially as one of the daily specials, so $1 or $2 off (can't remember now). -- Kiss of Fire (roll): My 2 co-workers who both ordered this definitely felt the fire. They both said they don't handle super spicy very well but can usually do spicy tuna, but were having a fun time fighting the heat throughout our meal. It looked like they used sriracha or something similar, and there was a generous spread of it on the roll, which looked like a generous portion. STAFF Lovely! She was prompt, quick to refill out waters, and brought us our change as origami. My co-worker's come through a few times to dine in and has called to take out, and the front-of-house woman apparently recognized her by voice! SPACE/LOCATION They have a nice, quaint space. This spot is a solid go to that would satisfy any craving for teriyaki. Stopped here on a road trip, quick detour off I5. We called ahead 10 minutes and it was ready for pick up immediately. Hmmm....I found this place thanks to the many positive yelpings and was ready to find a Teriyaki-glazed diamond in the rough that is Salem, but after my first visit expecting to be wow'd, I was kind of disappointed. Yes, the waitress was really nice, and the food did seem freshly cooked, but the flavor was really lacking. I got the spicy chicken bowl lunch special, so for $6+tip you get an oblong to-go carton (about half the size of the full-sized square cartons most places use) 3/4 full of rice, and topped with the saucy chicken, onion, red pepper, and cabbage in a sauce that seemed more focused on cranking the capsaicin levels than achieving the right balance between heat spice. As for quantity, I finished all of the meat and 2/3 of the rice, but still was left feeling a little hungry and didn't want to stuff myself on plain rice, so that was a bit of a downer, too. I think it's pretty average compared to most other Teri joints in PDX (hence the 3 stars), but for all the rave reviews I felt a little let down. It came with a small fresh salad with choice of ranch or ginger dressing. Me and my buddy were actually going to the next door love love teriyaki but we saw J's and thought we would give it a shot. By far the BEST teriyaki I've had in awhile. The meat was tender, sauce was amazing and the crab Rangoon I got on the side were immaculate. Also if you like spicy food they offer a spicy option for most of their dishes, but fair warning it is EXTREMELY spicy! I couldn't even finish my plate I was crying so much.
