I love J's restaurant. I stop in for lunch every time I visit Bay St. Louis. The decor is so nice now after their Restaurant Impossible appearance, but the service and food are as delicious as ever! Don't let the fact that it's in a strip mall behind McDonald's discourage you. They also feature and sell bottle cap art by Kathy, one of the twins who has worked there as long as I can remember. Her and her sister are both so warm and welcoming! I always get the house salad with ranch. Yes, it sounds boring, but the ranch is housemate and the house salad has toppings for days including cheese, tomato, almonds and even shaved coconut. It's fresh and delicious! Service was great with friendly waitresses. Unfortunately the food was not good. I had the daily special of meatloaf with mashed potatoes and string beans. The meatloaf was dried out and very tough, the mashed potatoes had the consistency and taste of coming from a box and the string beans seemed like they came from a can. The gravy for the mashed potatoes tasted like canned or Cisco brown gravy. The red gravy for the meatloaf was a bit sweet for my taste. This is the second time I've been there trying to give them another chance but I was once again disappointed. read more

The restaurant was packed when we arrived and my immediate thought was wow the food must be really good. Unfortunately that wasn't the case . Their specialties that day were the spaghetti and meatballs, well the meatballs were okay but the sauce not so much. Two in our party ordered the hamburger steaks but they were terribly disappointing. The steaks were overdone (burnt) hamburgers and tough to eat. The potatoes and string beans were tasty however. The forth guest ordered the meatloaf which was also way overcooked but again the potatoes and veggies were tasty. I hate writing not-so-good reviews and only hope this improves the timing on their cooking. I must say the service was great and the owner was ever so nice, I truly hope our next visit fairs out better. read more

Watched Restaurant Impossible and thought we would give it a try...very sad to find out they went back to their old ways and did not keep any of the new menu items...The food is not good...cold fries and tasteless food. OMG - what has happened to the food. I will admit it's been a couple years, but wow- drastic change for the quality and prices. $13.90 for Cheeseburger Po-Boy and $15 for Fried Shrimp Po-Boy - it's more like a 7" Po-Boy cut in half - 1 slice of Tomato and lettuce and 4 little slices of raw onion on the side- Mayo and Ketchup on the table in bottles - Ketchup runny and cheap - Mayo is Mayo - little tiny order of shoestring fries - ridiculous guys - I mean really? Hardly any Shrimp (very small Shrimp)on the Po-Boy and the beef Pattie's on the Cheeseburger Po-Boy had no taste at least there is one Patty on each half- just cheap ground beef shaped into patties- had to add Salt, Mayo and Ketchup for taste- if you gonna raise the prices we don't mind paying - but don't reduce the quality - no wonder it's not as packed as it was on my visit before this one. Time to switch out the Hot Sauce bottle - it's crystallizing - and it's Crystal Hot Sauce. On a good note - service was great and very nice restroom. Bring in the Heinz Ketchup for the table and dress the sandwiches before bringing to the table please and please put more fries!!! read more

This is a hole in the wall restaurant in Waveland. I met a few friends for lunch and it was extremely busy. I got the Grilled Chicken Salad, which was very good. But, the best part of the salad was the Ranch dressing! It was the perfect consistency and had so much flavor! The dressing had a ton of garlic, but I really liked it. We joked about our breath smelling like garlic the rest of the day, but it was worth it!! I've heard the steaks are really good, so I just might have to go back with my family and try them for dinner. The only reason I'm giving a 4 star and not 5 is because I feel like they didn't have much diversity on the menu. I would have liked seeing more vegetables or more options for lunch sized meals, possibly some healthier meal options. read more

I love the menu, it has everything the Bay-Waveland area has to offer. The service is great and the staff is friendly, attentive and professional. The fried shrimp stuffed baked potato is the best. Never thought of shrimp stuffed baked potato before visiting J's Restaurant. On my second visit I ordered a Roast Beef poboy, it was wonderful with gravy running down my arm. Yep, the same J's you saw on the restaurant makeover show! I've been stopping here for lunch or dinner for many years. Say the word potato, and I think of the Loaded Mountain Potato. Loaded with shrimp, butter, green onions, etc. Yesssss, please. It's like your entire plated meal was toppled onto a large baked potato for convenience. I, for one, appreciate that kind of ingenuity. The cult classic here is the boiled shrimp salad on croissant. Grab a side of their ranch to dip your shoestring fries into if you can handle sending out garlic vibes for days - it's worth it! The small boiled shrimp (not the big gulf caught shrimp on the potato) are tossed in this delicious house made garlic ranch dressing and topped with cheese, green onions, and almonds. I skip the coconut. Once you have one of these, you'll have a craving for it periodically. Give in to it. J's is the only place to get it. Also equally important - their sodas are extra fizzy and their twin sister waitresses are super sweet and attentive. Don't be fooled by the strip mall. Stop in and enjoy a carefree, casual meal. read more

Food was really good only have ate there once. Have been back on 4 occasions to eat but have found the business closed. Unexpectedly. We called on 2 different occasions and asked if they were open and they said yes. Got there and they were closed. Very inconsistent on operating hours. Don't think they will be around long. Ate dinner here on vacation with our family of seven. The service was spectacular and the waitresses were excellent interacting with our children so they could order their own meals. The food was delicious - poboys, onion rings, sweet potato fries, fried catfish plates, etc. Food was delicious and the servers were accommodating and excellent! This place use to be the bomb but the portions are small and the flavor not there anymore.

Our waitress was very nice and people were friendly but we ordered the shrimp and fish plate to share but were disappointed with the portions and particularly with the small and seemingly frozen shrimp. We had 3 pieces of catfish that were cooked ok. I did enjoy the gumbo but like the rest of the food was very small. We also selected the onion rings and those also seemed to be frozen. For $18.99 We just expected fresh seafood in Waveland. We live in Slidell and that plate compared to the same plate at Kenney's Seafood doesn't even come close. Locally owned family business. They have been around for years. We went a few days ago and had a very pleasant experience. Was slightly conflicted between a 4 or 3 star review. Decided to give a 4 star because the price was good for the amount of food you get. Also, the wait staff is very friendly and the owner is always present in the business. I had the shrimp and catfish plate which was good and filling. She had the chicken tender plate and was very happy with it. We also ordered the potato skins as an appetizer but they were actually a little bland. The skins were ultimately the reason for the conflict between a 3 or 4 star review. As the whole experience was generally satisfactory, we would rather give them the 4 star review and let everyone feel comfortable choosing this restaurant. read more

An all time favorite place to eat when in the Bay-Waveland area. Been going to J's for more than 20 years. They are consistently great. Portions are generous, seafood is always perfectly cooked. Absolutely love their salads and the ranch dressing is like no other. Shrimp poboy, sweet potato fries with a side of ranch, and a house salad- can't be beat. And the nachos!
