J ruined my boat. Took my perfectly running boat with a 100 hours on it in for a service and left with a boat that can't even start now. Told me I would need to replace a number of parts if I wanted to get it running again and that I would need to pay him over $2,000 dollars in cash only. I'm not mechanically inclined so he tried to take advantage of that. I took my boat to The Boat Shoppe and they told me he had disconnected a few lines to not allow it to start anymore. This owner is a crook! I highly recommend do not bring your boat here. He messed my boat up so badly the motor seized up. [[HIGHLIGHT]]He sent me a video of the boat running saying it was ready for pick up.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I come to pick up ask if I can start it and he seemed hesitant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The boat did not start and he claimed I hydrolocked my motor myself with me trying to start the boat infront of him. He then picked up my boat with his forklift and took it to the back and told me he would hold my boat to put a lean on it if I didn't pay him cash for the job. I ended up convincing him that cash and debit card are treated the same way. Made me pay and leave with a boat in worse shape then it was when I brought it. If you love your boat as much as I do. Most horrible experience I've been through with a "Mechanic" in my life !!!!!!! I texted the owner of this shop back in January with a video and a request to give me a quote to replace a steering shaft seal on my outdrive and he quickly gave me a quote so I told him I would drop the boat off on Monday like he asked. About 3 days later he sends me a quick video saying its all good to go and no leaks. I went down and picked up my boat and the following Saturday I took it straight to the lake and not in the water 30min and I noticed its leaking from the exact spot it was when I brought it in to him. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I texted and sent photos to the owner and he asked that I meet him on that following Monday at the lake and show him the leak so I did and it was leaking i then had to tow it all the way back to his shop and drop it off.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I asked him if he replaced the steering seal like he quoted me and his response was "No I never ever ever ever seen those leak. He said he removed the engine and resealed the gimble ring to the transom. Well thats not what I asked to be done so he promised he was going to fix it. Well 3 weeks later after me stopping by and multiple text and calls he tells me I got it all fixed and for me to meet him at the lake so I did and guess what???? Still leaking!!! So he takes it back to his shop and pulls the engine again and tells me my gimbal housing bolts are bad and will break if he tries to reinstall it. He tells me he has a used one in good shape and will install it for me i told him ok well the next day he texted me and said OK shes all fixed up and ready for pickup and it would be another 1200 bucks because he had to pull the engine and outdrive. I told him he never fixed the leak in the first place so why would I pay him his labor on top of the last payment???? We settled on 600 for the part and I was fine with that. So I picked up the boat and went to the lake that day and guess what I NOW HAVE 3 LEAKS!!!!!! so it went back to him and after he replaced the seal I originally told him to replace it had 1 leak and a small leak and while I was at the lake sitting at the dock I had the engine cover open and I noticed a heavy smell of gas and its a good thing I didn't turn on the blower because this guy put my gas line back together with zip ties and one spot he didn't even use anything. I literally could have lost my life over the incompetence of this shop!!!!! Do your own research before bringing your boat here. I finally brought my boat home and had to pay someone else to replace all the seals that I originally asked this shop to replace. Boat is finally fixed!!! read more

This is the best boat shop I have ever been to. I dropped off my boat in the morning to get two water pumps replaced on twin Honda 225hp outboard motors. Bye the afternoon, I received a call that it was ready. I couldn't believe it. The service was excellent and fast. I had a previous issue with one of my motors. I asked him if he could help me with this problem. The next day he went with me to the lake to test it and diagnose it. He immediately found out the issue. Jose said the fuel pump was bad. He ordered it and fixed the issue. I highly recommend him. He is an honest person and very knowledgeable. [[HIGHLIGHT]]He also gave me lots of free mechanical advice. I brought in a Minn Kota 80# Riptide 24v trolling motor for repair, a few months out of warrantee. The motor wouldn't run. I was told that the entire lower unit needed to be replaced at a cost of over $600. I explained that I just wanted the broken parts replaced but was told "it was no good." Since trolling motors rarely have all their parts fail at once I asked that the motor be returned to me. It was given back with the propeller, shear pin, propeller washer, nyloc nuts, and thru bolts loose. My quick connect plug was lost. I took it home and disassembled the motor. One of the brushes was deteriorated and jammed. All the motor needed was replacement of brushes and seals and reassembly. J's Marine should be ashamed of themselves. read more

I've put my boat in this shop to have work done, and was told to leave a $800 deposit, 35 days later, they give me my boat back in the same condition it was in when I dropped it off lied about the spark plug wires they replaced along with a distributor cap that I have evidence that it was placed there before I put my boat in this shop, so I was told they would keep the whole $800. I have to talk it up with small claims court. I will be taking this shop to court. read more

I have had 3 boats repaired with J. Most recently he pulled out my inboard mercury motor and repaired a broken starter bolt and a few more other things. He took the time to explain what he did and charged a fair price. He also did upholstery and electrical work for me. Remember, a good mechanic is not cheap and a cheap mechanic is not good. I have been at his shop when he gets calls from people trying to low ball him or ask for too much. Be patient and you will be back on the lake in no time. read more

I would not even give him any star. They truly should close their shop. Very dishonest guy. Do not take your marine boat or any kind of mechanical boat to this guy. He has no clue of what he is doing and in the end, you end up with more issues and he turns around and charges you for opening the items and putting it back together and charging for doing absolutely nothing. Yes. J's a very nice guy and pleasant to speak with. However they do a terrible job and will leave your boat is a worst condition then when you left it for repair. I took my boat for a steering wheel repair. The boat was in the shop for approximately 7 month before I got it back. Yes, each time I requested status some part or another had not arrived. I would just have to accept this excuse (i.e., covid back order). But when I finally got to pick up my boat is was thrashed. The upholstery had been oxidized by the weather. I had a tarp but they never even used it to protect my boat from the elements. Now my boat has rusty nut and bolt imprints on the stern. Missing bolt on cover plate. Screws falling all over the place when I lift the engine compartment. So now, I take it to the lake and I'm missing the hull plug. Which was directly connected to the engine. It's just gone not there. Not replaced nor was I informed. I was out in the mountains. How unprofessional. Well, I finally get a plug and return to boat. Launch boat in water then in about 45 minutes the engine stalls and will not stay idled. I'm stranded in the water in need of a tow! Wow. I took the boat to the shop for a steering repair and now the upholstery is faded, hatch for engine is broken, rusty nail and bolt marks, smeered grease every where and now engine problem. He had it long enough to trouble shoot inform and repair. Just unprofessional and tore up a fine boat that went to his shop in mint condition. Beware of this nice guy. Once you bring your boat here it's one problem after another. The owner Jay starts off as a nice guy but slowly gets rude. Our boat went into his shop summer of 2019 and has not seen a lake day since. It has been in his shop for a handful of problems. It started when a piston blew, which yes was my fault and Jay doesn't have a problem pointing that out to me over and over again. But if you think bringing your boat to this place will fix the mistake you accidentally made, guess again! Since our first time in this shop we tried taking out the boat a half a dozen times and not once did we leave the dock, due to the next issue that Jay happens to find. Today has been the last straw when he decided to insult me and my mom when I asked him why problems keep coming up. He wanted another chunk of change to fix his next find. If this wasn't bad enough I had noticed a loose hose in the engine compartment, when I asked Jay why it was there he said it's not a big deal don't worry, but a loose hose is always a big deal. Out of the 6 times that we brought our boat to his place, 2 times he has scheduled us an appointment and then wasn't even there. I know there aren't many boat shops in the area but if you want your boat to get back on the water, look for a better place that actually knows how to fix a boat. read more

We recently acquired a boat that was serviced here. Over $500 was charged for repairs including a repair for the no oil light coming on every 5 minutes. The shop stated it was a kinked line to the oil pump and "fixed" it. The first time we took the boat out the same problem happened. The owner said he would order the oil pump and fix it. One week later he still hadn't ordered the part but was going to order the part and contact us. 2 weeks after that still no contact. We are taking the boat to another shop. read more

After taking my boat to J's, I also found that to be true. J's owner, Jose Martinez, does his best to meet your marine needs, without selling you unnecessary items. J's shop rate, $90 per hour, is the BEST RATE I have found in the Clovis/Fresno area for quality marine work. Jose has worked on my Honda 130 hp motor and North River boat several times with my total satisfaction. I have taken my boat to several other marine shops in the Clovis/Fresno area that were not as personable as J's with a much higher rate for the same service. I suggest getting estimates from other marine shops in the area and compare their estimate to J's. Jose is also trained to provide electric motor warranty work for Minn Kota trolling motors. Made an appointment to take my ranger bass boat in on a Monday morning @ 7:30. I was told I would receive a phone call by the end of the day, or no later than the next day [ Tuesday ], to let me know what was needed for repairs. I had not received a cll as of Friday, so I called to inquire about the repairs needed. I was told " I will ask him and get an update, and call you right back". No call back as of 4pm Friday, So I called again at 4:02 pm. got a voice mail box saying " we are closed for the day. So Monday morning I went to the shop at 08:30, no one around, shop was still closed. My boat was still parked in the same exact spot it was on Wednesday of the prior week. it had not been moved or touched. So I called later that day 11:30 and got the same run around story. " I will check on the status and get back to you. Again nothing, not one call back. Not even an apology. I'm now looking for another shop to do repairs for me. So we stored our boat here while we loked for a house when we moved to CA. This guy, Jose (aka. "Sammy") is my wife's brother, so we trusted him. When we went to pick it up, he didn't have it. He laughed and said that he, "lent it out to a friend and now can't get ahold of him". He finally got it back, no apologies, no remorse. There were pieces missing off the engine, everything we had in the boat was gone or destroyed. There was over 10 gallons of water in the gas tank. Our boat had been abused. We're over $5k in repairs now on a $11k boat that was in mint condition when we left it with him. Neither the boat nor the trailer were registered; but he put registration stickers from another boat on ours. Turns out, he's done this with other people's boats that he was supposed to be repairing. He's been to court for this, but the law says if you give him the keys, it is not stealing. So he knows the loopholes. And the insurance company will not cover it becuase you will need to prove what shape it was in when you dropped it off. You have been warned. He's a crook. Too bad I can't give him a zero-star rating. read more
