This is the best barber in town. I wouldn't go anywhere else. This place is appointment only, only issue is you'll sometimes be waiting for 15 mins past your appointment time, so accommodate that if you are coming on a lunch break or a short time frame. This is the best barber shop in Gainesville and there is no doubt about it. All the barbers are professional and talented. The prices are the same standard prices you would get charged at any decent barbershop. I would definitely recommend setting up and appointment. The barbershop takes walk-ins but almost all of the barbers have their days booked up with appointments so if you try to walk-in you are going to wait a very long time. The plus side is that the barbers are very good at being on time for their appointments so if you do make an appointment your basically sat in a chair as soon as you get there. Be aware! If you miss an appointment, even if it is your first time you will be charged the full price of your service you booked. I had a work emergency that prevented me from making my appointment. I have been going to this barber Billy Hernandez for over 2 years and never missed or canceled an appointment. I could understand a service charge but to be charge $30 is unacceptable. I would also understand if I had missed an appointment in the past but that is not the case. However, it is okay if they are running late and keep you waiting in the lobby. read more

Today was the first time I had Manny of J's 503 Barbershop give me a shave and a haircut. He's quick but precise, and wasn't satisfied until I was. The hot towel shave was a treat that I don't give myself often enough. The price for the shave and haircut was the same that I paid 10 years ago for just a shave In Miami. Even though it's a very easy cut I'm very particular on who cuts my hair and have been looking for a great barber since my last one retired at the start of Covid. Walk-ins can wait well over two hours waiting for a haircut. The haircuts are sometimes really good or terrible, depending on barber. Prices are on the expensive side and $10 more if you try to make an appointment over the app. Do not recommend until they have their walk in situation figured out. Quick, but spot on cut. First hair cut Post quarantine so my hair was like a caveman when I walked in. Then I walked out looking ten years younger and less homeless. This is the goto place for my kids already I think I will make mine also. They had over 8 barbers, took temperature outside and everyone was wearing mask and gloves. He doesn't give you the cut he wants like a lot of places. He listens and is on it. I have never left not liking my hair. The Bad: the only bad part of J's is the wait. They are so precise that it can take a long time. I have gone in and waited 3 hours for my turn. There is no ugly here, just nice guys who are really talented. J's 503 as I said is a cool place. My barber did not understand what I was asking for. He shouldn't have said he could do a cut outside of his ability. I asked for an classic undercut with a fade on the left and a fade on the back. I asked for 2" or less off the top. I end up with practically a too long crew cut because he had to keep chopping to fix his cut. I miss my Barber in LA. At one point another barber had to step in and fix what he could. Then he straight razors my neck without any hot lather or prep so my neck is shredded, I had to ask a colleague to check if I was bleeding on the back of my neck because it feels so raw and I don't want to bleed on my collar. Fortunately it's just red, but the hell with ever going back here. I feel like a jackass for tipping well but I just wanted out of there and I always tip. Carlos gave me a haircut that has been getting compliments for a week. The price for a beard and hair cut was like 22 bucks which I find cheap. Do expect to wait, but I can't hold that against the barber. I showed up ten minutes before opening and I was 12th in line. read more

I usually really like this place but ever since they added on appointments it has become a complete mess. You can't say walk ins are welcome if you make the walk ins wait 2 1/2 hours for a hair cut. Most of the people end up just walking away because nobody is able to wait that long. If you are only going to prioritize appointments then it needs to be appointment only otherwise that defeats the purpose of a walk in. I'm not expected to be seen right away as a walk in but waiting over two hours is just ridiculous. read more

This place is amazing! Due to the job I have, I'm required to have a fresh haircut every week. I have been getting a fade every week for the last 13 years, and this was by far the best! Brian was an artist. They also use straight razors; a technique that isn't seen too often. The only downside about J's Barbershop is the wait. I waited a little over an hour before I was called back. They take their time and pay attention to the detail which for me is important due to a Bad scar I have on my head due to a brain tumor I had removed but (Israel) took care if that. I'm from Cleveland Ohio visiting and I have never received a cut like this before. Everyone was welcoming from the time I entered the door to when I left.
