Found out later in the evening that G&M Catering was responsible and had done a good job in previous years but all agreed that this year was a big failure! Problems: 1. Food was cold 2. The meat (Brisket/Roast Beef?) was so tough that it broke many of the plastic knives 3. So this was a group of dedicated foodies. I decided on the Israeli menu which included shakshuka, tahini, hummus, fresh baked challah rolls and pita bread, baba ghanoush, pickles and olives, Labbane cheese & Za'atar, borekas-potato, mushroom, cheese and a selection of Babkas (sweet rolls, danish.) All said the food was outstanding. "Best tabbouleh I've ever had!" "The shakshuka & hummus is amazing!" "The challah rolls taste like my homemade challah!" "Best pita!" The breads are truly freshly baked! Galit, the owner, is originally from Jerusalem, & is a pleasure to work with. Galit packed the leftovers for my daughter and son-in-law after the event. All because UT catering makes a mockery of food. I've had UT catered meals several times. The first time was as a serving wench at the UT Madrigal dinner sometime in late 1999. As a green Foodie, I thought the food was okay. Some of the dinners served to the cast and crew were downright disgusting, but it was a step up from Jester cafeteria. I remember taco dinner meat looking like predigested chili swimming in a vat of oil. Gross. Only poor students would it eat, and I did. The food served at the UT Madrigal dinner wasn't so bad. It was London broil, steamed veggies, bread and butter, and wassail. Not too bad considering again it was free to the cast and crew. Bread and butter rock! Mostly because it's butter. The cast and crew stuck our fingers into the left overs and ate like starving natives of some tropical island. Savages we were. The last meal I had served by UT catering was at the Engineering department's Honors Day event. My friend had no one to take, so he brought me. I went because he said free food. I heart free food. The meal was pasta, bread sticks, and brownies. Not bad. I would actually give this meal 3 stars. The worst meal I had was at the Society for Behavioral Neuroendocrinology (SBN) conference. Please also note that this is the only meal I paid for that was hosted by UT catering. $25. $25 wasted. SBN is a small group of researchers, most from Japan, Mexico, Canada, and Europe. There's maybe 200 of us or less around the world. Seeing that the 2005 conference was in Austin of all places, I hoped that the International researchers would get a healthy dose of American culture and food. I was wrong. I was disappointed. I was really embarrassed by the quality of the food served. The menu consisted of fajitas, beans, rice, and some Texas desserts. The fajita meat tasted like and looked like it came off a cadaver. The tortillas were dry, smelled like lard that had been left out for 3 days in the Texas heat, and fell apart because they were so stale. Bummer. I was embarrassed that this could be called Tex-Mex. The desserts were worse: Jack Daniel's pie and Flan. This flan had the consistency of cottage cheese. It was sloppy. It was goopy. It was sad. A little piece of me died inside. The Jack Daniel's pie was runny. Oh man..... I wanted to cry. Please don't let all these big shot intellectual scientists think that food in Texas sucks. Please let them eat somewhere else and go away thinking that Austin has decent food. The only fun part about that banquet was that the president of SBN got drunk, wore cowboy boots with cowboy hat, and started singing deep in the Heart of Texas in a Belgium accent. Other than that, it sucked. UT catering, biggest assault on your taste buds since Vegemite sandwiches.

DNA Events (and Kathryn and Alanna) were fantastic to work with - especially across two years of…read moredelays. We loved the idea of getting to share some of our favorite local food (Terry Black's BBQ) with our guests, which made DNA a great choice for us. They handled all the coordination with Terry Black's, and then we also used the sister company Dagar's to cater the non-BBQ portions of the meal (salads, breads, non-alcoholic drinks, etc.) DNA also picked up and carved the brisket on the day-of. The service was excellent - Alanna took such great care of my husband and I, and we heard nothing but compliments from our guests on the food (both the brisket and the excellent salads from Dagar's) and the professionalism of the servers. On the logistics side, Terry Black's did end up being harder to work with than expected, so I also want to give credit to DNA for sticking with it. While the BBQ was excellent and we had personal reasons for using them, they changed their prices multiple times, had requirements that added complexity, and internal turnover almost derailed an agreement DNA had already negotiated. Thanks to the DNA team for their perseverance there!

I reached out to DNA events and got ahold of Kathryn. We corresponded via e-mail and phone to get estimates about staffing costs which were very reasonable and would take us significantly closer to our budget. I circled back with the catering company to let them know we would need drop off only and they replied they would not allow for an outside staffing company for weddings. I let Kathryn know what they said and she actually reached out to the company via e-mail since she had connections with there to try to allow DNA to serve their food. The company still wouldn't allow an outside company to serve but they worked with us on pricing and we got everything we wanted within our budget. She made us super happy with just putting in that extra effort to get the ball rolling on a solution for trimming costs and I will definitely be recommending everyone to use DNA events for staffing needs in the future. By the way, this all happened in a day. She is great with corresponding and keeping me in the know with the next possible step. Thanks for you time and advice! :)
