Ive tried several of her sandwiches, all of her kimbap options, and her korean noodle bowl. Ive also tried most of her drink options. Food tastes homemade and fresh which is awesome. She makes it all to order. Anyone who has run a small business before will know how tough it can be, especially when it involves the service industry, so my kudos to her for doing this on her own this well. Nobody is perfect, but this place is worth a visit. Restaurant is small and cozy but clean and comfortable enough. There are a few seats/tables. Many people do takeout.

*What's past is prologue*…read more The most recent past? The Ovaltine Cafe. Right near the Garden Strathcona. I could have went there, but it was too fancy for riff raff, coarse, and an unbecomingly dressed individual such as myself. Maybe another day. After all, I was planning on fancying myself up for the Blue Water Cafe and Raw Bar later that evening. Being posh twice in one day is compulsive, and let alone be excessive. So I dined in this unpretentious institution instead. I felt,.... compelled. Friendly lady, who I assume is the owner. Pricing is similar to the Ovaltine, tax in, albeit slightly less expensive. "Danger" pricing at the Ovaltine I can only imagine. It's closer to ground zero. Standard diner fare. I'd return if I'm in the area and the timing is right. Plenty of street parking. There's not much competition for this type of food/business in the area. You'd have to trek further.

Food is quality and price is so affordable. Very old and run down looking in the exterior and interior, though, it has the late 80s no fuss-diner vibe and feel. I had the BBQ pork rice meal, which had rice, only two broccoli heads, and a lot of pieces of pork. The pork was dry and too chewy. I also got the strawberry mango bubble tea. The drink was like a smoothie, and I liked it although it was a little too sweet, but the tapioca wasn't that good. I do like how they gave a lot though. The labels on the drinks were so cute and funny. The first thing I noticed when we walked in was that it smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. We arrived around 9:30 AM for brunch. On a typical day, I would have ordered the breakfast croissant, but I was feeling adventurous. I tried the chicken sandwich, which was served with fries topped with shredded Pecorino Romano. While the bun was pleasantly toasted, the chicken (with mayo, lettuce, and cucumber) lacked flavor. It tasted under-seasoned and needed an extra element to elevate it--perhaps pickles, cheese, or maybe even a different sauce to complement the flavor of the mayo. I found myself alternating bites of the sandwich with the fries, which were nicely crispy. The saltiness of the Pecorino actually helped balance the milder flavor of the chicken. To drink, I had a hot Americano. It was flavorful, not too watery, and served in a beautiful black mug. I would recommend this cafe if you are in the Richmond area and looking for a relaxing place to spend time with family or friends!
