I was in the Poplar/Perkins area shopping yesterday and decided to stop by Joseph's to finally lay eyes on this place as I'd heard a few mentions of it being the only store in Memphis that carries authentic designer apparel. It was not busy (Tuesday around noon) at all yet a security guard greeted me outside and opened the door for me. Upon entry, I examined a few home/stationery items on the front table then made my way through the sales floor, from left to right, and did a full circle/figure eight within 5-6 minutes while scoping the scene. As a retail manager myself, I pay keen attention to details, service approaches and proactive engagement from sales staff when in an establishment. To say I was appalled wouldn't fully capture the disgust felt when exiting that place. Clearly service with a smile is only rendered to select clientele and the merchandising was overwhelmingly tacky with so much product crammed onto the bland shelving and atop tables, inside casing. I didn't understand the hype previously heard and definitely was unimpressed after encountering the atmosphere for myself. I had money to spend and was frolicking for the day while visiting family in town yet Joseph's missed an opportunity to connect with and secure a new customer for life via inconsiderate and unprofessional staff/discriminatory culture. I have worked for several luxury brands in TX (LV, Ralph Lauren, Neiman Marcus) and fully know what true service and attentiveness look like. The staff I observed were unconcerned with greeting nor serving me as I subsequently read in previous reviews from others. What a shame that this company promotes such behavior and does not value all people who take the time and consideration to visit their store. Never again. Do better. read more

The customer service in this store sucks!! Whenever I go there to shop I feel like gum on the bottom of a shoe. The salespeople in this store are horrible. They make you feel like an outcast. They don't speak, don't look at you and definitely don't make any eye contact with brown skinned people. I would love to shop there more often but don't feel welcomed enough to spend my money there. I had a Natura Bisse facial scheduled there today and was told by Donna that my appointment was cancelled because they had so many people on the waiting list. They say that they did contact me several times, calls, text messages, etc. NO they did neither. So since they could not reach me they scheduled someone else in my space before the appointment even started. I am so upset because I have planned this facial for over a month. And was waiting to purchase my usual skin care products during my facial. This put the icing on the cake for me with this store and their racist sales staff. I recommend you do not shop there!!! It's funny to read these reviews no matter HOW old they are, they still apply present day 2022. If you ALSO NOTICED those they say "they received excellent service regardless of how they were dressed" ask your self based on profile pictures and names what they ALL have in common....I'll wait. Fast forward to my personal experience, I make VERY good money and can shop with the best of them but I don't feel the need to shop every week or month for that matter for "higher end" items I purchase when necessary; however, my less than frequent activity at the store should NOT cause for the cold, less than stellar experience ANY HUMAN should receive. It amazes that in 2022 after a pandemic "we" still have to educate people on how to be kind TO EVERYONE. People have to stop judging books by the cover, last I checked I'm sure those sells persons don't make 6-figures. Your JOB is to SERVE, PLEASANTLY ANYONE that walks in the store and not your "weekly friends" or who think may be rich or a NBA wife/. Sickens me to my soul every time I go into this store...why DO I punish myself? Mainly because when I want something, I don't want the song and dance of waiting on shipping the chaos of UPS/FEDEX. I will be re-evaluating and save that 9.75% tax for trying to shop local. Maybe one day someone will read these reviews and attempt to be human and kind and change the unruly, disrespectful behavior that comes so natural these hired people. Must be a part of the application process. A simple, "Thank you for coming in, someone will be right with you" will go a LONG way!!! While definitely on the high end of the retail spectrum in Memphis, their sales people offer the same excellent customer service to everyone. I love their girls' night out celebrations. I always run into friends I haven't seen in a while. I primarily shop during their semi annual sales, though I do go regularly for make-up. I love going in for special occasions to have my makeup done. I always feel beautiful after one of their professional make up artists has worked their magic on me. My annual birthday tradition is to check out their sale shoes and buy a pair of impractical shoes to admire for the upcoming year. I now have a whole closet devoted to my love for impractical shoes. read more

There's a security guard inside the store when you walk in the door. The reason being -- this posh women's clothing store carries top designers like Jarbo, J. Brand, Michael Kors, Stella McCartney, Elizabeth and James, Prada, and Diane von Furstenberg, to name a few. It's like a department store in layout, but smaller. I spotted a pair of red and white Prada wedges on their shoe sale rack for $171 -- not bad if you're familiar with that price tag. Also fell in love with a pair of brown Chloe heels, and I never considered myself one to covet shoes. Have your makeup done with Trish McEvoy cosmetics or sip a refreshment while you try on fine jewelry -- Joseph is a fine shopping experience. read more

I never felt comfortable going into this store. I'm not exactly sure what the problem is, but I think it's because the salespeople seem to gush over customers they know, and I feel like an uninvited guest. They carry some designer clothes that are found in New York and other large cities, but the selection is not very large. I used to go to Joseph's to special order Stuart Weitzman shoes because I have a very narrow foot. One day the buyer told me Stuart Weitzman no longer makes super slim shoes because only elderly women buy narrow shoe sizes and the market is dying. I felt that comment was insulting, but more importantly, I found out it wasn't true. I now order my Stuart Weitzman shoes when I'm in another city or the New York store mails me their special order book for the upcoming season. My major point on this store is that they want to present themselves as offering high quality merchandise along with customized service. I don't find that to be true. read more

I walked around the shoe department for 20 minutes with no one acknowledging my existence. When I approached someone and asked for assistance, they turned and walked away. Save your money on sales tax and order from Zappos or call the boutique in New York. I ordered the same shoes at Zappos, saved on sales tax, and in the first 5 minutes on the site a chat box opened up asking if I needed help. Sad state of affairs when a computer site offers better service than actual people. Note to staff- Your job is to sell things, not act like entitled snobs. read more

Oh if only I had a kazillion dollars (sigh). I would shop at Joseph all the time. But alas, browsing is about all I can afford to do at the ultra-swank, posh east Memphis boutique. But it is definitely a fun place to browse. Beautifully merchandised and heavily stocked with big name designers, you are sure to find your dream dress or the perfect pair of Christian Louboutins. The shoe department alone is worth a visit. The cosmetics counter is incredible as well, carrying lines like Trish McEvoy and Bobbi Brown and Erno Laslo. They will do free makeovers for you, and even offer you a glass of wine in the process. Joseph's is top of the line. There simply isn't another store like it in Memphis. I have been into Joseph twice, and both times I received excellent service. I am not sure why there are so many negative reviews, but I had come in on a whim most recently after breakfast, and I looked horrible. I was still in my sweats, my hair in a pony tail, and I had no makeup on. I probably still smelled like diner. Katie in the handbag dept was extremely helpful, knowledgable, and was really excellent to work with. So to the reviewers who believe that they are ignored due to their attire: perhaps it is a sour face that turns people off. I looked horrible but was happy to be there, and I believe that makes a difference when it comes to customer service. My mom has been in, and she owns nothing designer. She has also received excellent service, but she also always has a smile on her face. read more

This is a great store where you can get the latest fashions from New York, London, Paris and Milan without having to leave Memphis! As a loyal customer for over ten years, I can tell you the staff and owners are super friendly and very knowledgeable about the products they carry. What really makes the store unique, in this day and age, is their old fashioned, customer is number one, attitude!! It is achieved through the focused, personalized attention to each and every shopper. The store knows that these days you can buy pretty much whatever you want without ever leaving the privacy of your home, so they strive to make your shopping experience as pleasurable as possible, so you will want to return!! Other positives include complimentary wine, a frequent buyer program, free make overs and use of personal shoppers. The selection isn't as diverse as what you would find at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, or Neiman Marcus, but it still carries a decent range of styles. Interested in cosmetics? Terrible customer service! If you aren't a customer who shops there weekly or dressed to show you obviously have money, don't expect to be helped. I have been here multiple times and it happens every single time. The sales associates obviously work on commission because they act like I have been a waste of their time when I ONLY buy a pair of Tory Burch sandals for $150. It's completely ridiculous coming from retail every customer should be treated the same regardless if they spend hundreds of dollars or nothing at all. If this wasn't the only place I could buy a pair of Tory Burch shoes in Memphis I would never go again. read more

I purchased Louboutins at this store. I like that they sell them. I thought I would have to go to Nashville to purchase. The store is kind of small. It felt a little crowded while trying on shoes. I wish they carried Louis Vuitton (as far as I could tell they did not). I'm giving 3 stars because the sales rep was not that warm. Love, love, love Joseph. The sales people are friendly and helpful. They have the best selection of shoes and handbags. It is such a fun experience to shop there. I told my husband that I want something from Joseph for every birthday. Love Elle, Barrie and Phillip. thanks to the generosity of my parents, i used to shop here in high school and college when Lessie was one of the buyers. since then, the store has expanded in size and gotten progressively snobbier. ironic. Shoe selections are limited and if you are (un)fortunate to be a size 8 like myself, don't even bother looking at the clothes. i was told recently by an employee that they have a hard time selling anything larger than a 6 and don't bother stocking larger sizes in most things. now that they've stopped carrying Akris Punto clothes and Trish McEvoy cosmetics, i will not be gracing the Wexners with my presence. i miss Zoe. read more

Like Catherine H. I too had a not-so-pleasant experience at Joseph's. I had shopped there before with no problems, but yesterday was a different story. I was watched like a hawk, made to feel like I was intruding, and then when I was told that they had sold out of the particular boot that I was looking for, they lied and said that the designer didn't make the shoe anymore. Instead I sat in my car and ordered the shoe from the designer website. So much for customer service. Joseph's is one of the only places in Memphis to buy designer clothes and accessories... and they know it. My mother bought a very expensive Prada bag and they were supposed to ship it to another city. When I called to check on the status, they rudely told me they had ZERO record of the purchase ever happening, nor did they care that they had no record of my purchase! Luckily, she kept the receipt so she had proof of purchase. It is just absurd that such a small business with less and less customers every year can think they have the right to treat customers this way. DO NOT trust this store. I was appalled by a recent encounter with your employees. When I visited your store to return some skin care products by Laura Mercier that broke my face out tremously. The encounter was very unprofessional and showed no customer service. I brought along the receipt and the products, in its original packaging. My intent was to return it for cash, in accordance with your store's policy. I approached the counter with the products in a bag and presented my receipt to an employee whose name was "Jane." Which was not the sale person that sold me the products 3 days ago? Jane told me that they do not take back used products. This is not was Erika the sale person that helped me on Saturday said. Erika told me and my sister that also purchased some products from them that we could bring it back for whatever reason. I ask for the manager name Eddie, I told him to look at my face, which speaks for itself. I have spent 200.00 at this counter and 1700.00 at the handbag and belts counter all in the one store in the same day. And you mean to tell me I can't return 200.00 worth of products that has broke me out and caused me to go to the dermatologist where I had to spend more $$$. I then asked for the store manager, Eddie states he is out of town and will not be back until the next day. I then asked for the Ass. Manager he said there was no ass. Manager. WOW I thought this is getting crazy now. OK, I asked him to show me where on the receipt shows no returns; he could not show me that anywhere in writing. I then asked for the Corp. Office number. He gave me his card with his name on there and wrote on the back the manager's name Charlie Barton. I asked again you mean to tell me I have spent close to 2000.00 in this store and cannot return 200.00 of a product that has red spots all over me face. He said no, then an employee from the counter next to me butted in and said something "smart" by this time I am very angry. I asked her who asked her anything and told her to mind her own business. I was mortified, and I am embarrassed to say that I was so dumbfounded by Jane, Eddie and the other employees rude behavior that I then left the store. I find it hard to believe that you would knowingly employ such abrasive and unprofessional clerks. Being that Joseph is supposed to be a high class and very exclusive store. I am not certain at this time if I will ever feel comfortable returning to that establishment. I have since then contacted the corp. office and spoke with Mrs. Thompson that seem to be whether nice about the matter. She advised me that she spoke with Eddie and that I could now take the products back. What was the BIG problem when I was standing in the store on my lunch going back and forward? That's the question.. Here's the answer "Africa American" it's sad to say that the behavior is still going on in 2011. Being that I live out of town and the store is whether far. I will return the products on tomorrow..Along with all on the other items Gucci Purse and Belt. Not only have they lost a customer they have lost a sale!!! NEVER SHOP AT JOSEPH..
