I hired a a plumbing company in September to find a potential leak. They came and failed to do their job. They stayed for 5 minutes and told us it was the flashing on the roof. I had requested they cut the wall open and told them of a bathroom that was above, the wall was ruined already as well, so cutting open the wall wasn't an issue. When we got the wall replaced we found a seven foot crack in the sewage pipe, that they failed to find during their 5 minute stay. I was charged $100 for the 5 minutes and left with undiscovered leak. read more

Joseph Hazel installed a combination boiler / hot water heater (Weil-McLain Aquabalance 120C) for us in October 2019 at a cost of $6K. The installation was well done, very clean and neat. The unit worked well for us until October 2022 and then began to leak water onto the floor. Upon removing the front cover several leaks were apparent where calcium had built up around the gasket to the heat exchanger and flow meter. Given that the unit had just hit 3 years old, I called Hazel to have them take a look, assuming some of the parts/labor could be under warranty. When the technician arrived, I showed him the leaks, and he immediately said "needs a new heat exchanger" and then promptly left. He may have spent 5 minutes in the house in total. I don't believe he even touched the unit. Two days later I had heard nothing and so I called Hazel to see what had actually transpired after the tech arrived back at the shop. They directed me to the parts department and a replacement heat exchanger was indeed on back order. It didn't seem to me however that this was the problem since at least one of the leaks was not at the heat exchanger. Not trusting the technician, I ultimately decided to take the unit apart myself, replace the gaskets at the leaks, and retighten those two connections. This solved the problem immediately, all for the cost of my time and a $55 gasket kit purchased online. While I can understand that some technicians are "technically" inept, Hazel wasn't done "helping." A full two months later (Dec 15, 2022), I received a bill for $100: the cost of 5 minutes with the useless "technician." When I called them to ask about the charge for the worthless service, they offered to credit the account, thankfully. What is uncanny is that they would send a bill two months later, with a due date just before year's end, as if they are targeting an accounts receivable goal rather than billing for legitimate service. Long story short, I will not being using them again because even if they can do a good install, they do not know how to service what they sell or stand behind it. read more

This is one of the most reliable plumbing outfits in the area. They answer immediately, and will send people on weekends. They have saved our skins a couple of times since we have an inadequate drain line that clogs periodically, usually on holidays. However, the last time I called it was for an unusual problem-- kitchen faucet was clogged-- which I suspected came from a new tankless water heater we just installed a few months ago. True to past performance, they got someone to the house quite quickly, quicker than anyone else in the area. Tech cleaned a faucet and shower traps of mineral sediment, confirmed it looked like mineral deposit. 15 minute visit. Problem persisted-- faucet clogged in two days-- so I called again. I said the problem was ongoing, and they said they would send another tech, and her exact words were "I won't charge you." They sent someone else, who cleaned the traps and looked at the heater. He said electric tankless heaters don't do well with hard water, gave me an idea about a water softener costs, left. I got a bill for $190: they had charged me for two separate visits. When I called to ask about this, they got quite defensive. They demanded the name of the person to whom I had spoken (I don't take such records as a habit, preferring to trust the word of small businesses, plus as far as I can recall she didn't identify herself), and then they informed me that they charge for service calls no matter what. I said that's not what their scheduler had told me: return visits for the same problem? Yes. Attendant got quite defensive and told me to just "pay for the one visit" but that my "account would be flagged" and hung up on me. I am assuming this means my business is no longer welcome there. I will pay the full bill for both visits, since I have nothing in writing to support my position, no estimate, no phone recording, just the bill, so I suppose it's my mistake for taking verbal assurance over written documentation to something that seems common sense and common courtesy. I but will share this customer service experience with anyone who asks about plumbers in the area. Good, responsive plumbers; uncalled for, aggressive customer service. read more

Showed up on time, introduced themselves and asked if we would like them to wear masks. I had a number of items that I was told needed done. The majority of them they did and a couple did not need done(and they explained why and told me what to watch for). All jobs that they did were done in a great manner and when they were done they explained (not mansplained) what all they had done and cleaned up completely. I would not hesitate to call them again or recommend them. We are new to the area and to find a great plumber right off - I couldn't be happier. read more

We had our HVAC system installed by this company 10 years ago... forget about how the first summer after installation, all the ductwork in our basement fell down and they acted like we had done something to it and I had to haggle to have it fixed at all... but we have a home heating system that is inefficient, impossible to find parts for, and is completely incapable of heating even 1/2 our home once the temp gets low. The ductwork that was put in was put in poorly thought out places (seems like it was just the easiest places to install with no consideration for having to live in the space afterwards). There was no foundation for the concrete pads the system sits on, and it now has sunken to sit at a 10-15 degree angle. We have had another provider maintain the system since because I felt like I was on the defensive very time we called. Go anywhere else... read more

A thin film of ice caused a outside heat pump to wobble loudly, partly because this company failed to install 50 cent vibration pads on this unit's headers. They did make the installation on the other unit which did not vibrate. A technician spent no more than 10 minutes to melt the ice with a torch. He expanded these 10 minutes to 90 minutes and the company charged $202.50 despite my having paid over $11,000 for the two units less than 4 years ago. At not point did the technician disclose travel time charges and weekend surcharges. In fact he didn't even think I'd be charged because the units remain on warranty. Wrong. This company charges BIG CITY rates but tries to present itself as ethical and small town. I feel cheated and deceived and believe you should steer clear of this company big time! read more

*This is a glowing review of Joseph C. Hazel, but it's long and it takes a few paragraphs before I start telling you about my experience. I apologize in advance, but I believe reviews should be more informative than, "I liked it. It was good". I've worked in trades associated with construction and fabrication for 20+ years, so when a tradesman comes into my home, I'm more observant and more equipped to recognize good or bad practices that may go unnoticed by the average homeowner. Having just moved to Central PA and needing a plumber for some work on our 19th century home, I was annoyed to start from scratch finding good tradesmen. There was only one company that seemed to have any verifiable positive feedback and so that's where I started. I called him up to ask about cutting out some old galvanized pipes and replacing them with PEX for a bathroom I planned to renovate. This is not a review about that guy, but I will say that after 3 weeks of waiting for him to even come look at the job, his bid was exorbitantly high. Still, since he had such good reviews, I decided to pay more for quality and I hired him. It was a mistake. He seemed genuinely confused by PEX tools. He didn't route the plumbing the way we'd talked about. When the plumbing lines needed to turn a corner, he didn't add 90 degree fittings, he just bent the lines into a 1' radius which would now require a soffit to hide. He left puddles of standing water... He was a joke. I paid him and I won't have him back to finish up the job Then our boiler went out... Now I needed to find another plumber. I called Joseph C. Hazel and I called Envinity for bids. Reps from both contractors showed up within a day to assess the situation. Both companies gave me detailed bids and offered a warranty of their work. Both companies were professional and polite. I went with Hazel because Envinity could not begin the boiler replacement for a month and because Hazel's bid was more reasonably priced for a comparably efficient boiler. Hazel showed up 15 minutes early on the scheduled day with enough guys to wrestle the old boiler out of the basement. After that, two guys remained to complete the installation. The actual plumbing work was great. The copper fittings were soldered properly and neatly, and he showed a lot of forethought in keeping the entire set up accessible, neat, and unobtrusive. In short, the copper plumbing looks like artwork. The gas plumbing was a concern for me. I've apprenticed for a gas plumber in the Northwest and I know that flex line has limitations and code requirements for allowable radiuses (yes, I know, "radii"), and my existing flex line didn't meet those requirements. I asked Hazel if they would replace the line rather than try to fix it. Without hesitation, he said, "Sure, no problem"... there was no extra charge. The venting was another concern. Given the boiler's location, it was going to be difficult to route the new PVC vent in a way that didn't look weird or become an obstruction. They hit a homerun on this one. There are two 3" vent lines and there is a limit to how long they can be. Hazel, creatively and very efficiently, was able to route the venting in a way that didn't weaken the structure, intrude on the usable space, or exceed the specs limitations. This may not sound impressive, but you would appreciate the gravity of this paragraph if you could see the work. It took a total of two days to complete the installation (I expected this). When it was completely finished, they cleaned up any evidence that they'd ever been there. They bled the air out of all 10 radiators. Once they fired it up and waited to make sure everything was running properly, they asked if there was anything else and left me with my shiny new boiler. The next day, they checked back to make sure everything was working properly and to ask if I had any concerns. I am extremely happy with the workmanship, the professionalism, and the cleanliness. I would have liked the whole thing to be a little cheaper, but it was an expensive unit and it required a lot of man hours to install correctly, so it's justifiable.
