Probably some of the best prepared chicken I've had here in any disg. Was very tender and flavorful. Chips and salsa are always my favorite items. But the guacamole was especially good this visit. We got in before the rush and were happy to be seated off to ourselves while it lasted. Great people watching location in the corner of the bar area. We got to see a gentleman walk in for a pickup order and his pet parrot was on his shoulder. Yes he had both eyes and both legs. But no I didn't take a picture. Not too busy for a Thursday late afternoon, and service was fine, our waiter was okay; not awful but not stellar either--which is acceptable. The chips and salsa were probably the best I've had--nice and toasty salty chips and salsa that didn't have a boat load of cilantro flavor. The corona shrimp taco was outstanding! Crammed full of huge crispy shrimp and packed with delicious flavor. The refried beans were good at first but their unusual smoky flavor was off-putting. Ended up not finishing those. Overall the experience was maybe slightly above average, but with the weird beans, it made for an okay mealtime experience. Will I go back? The waiter we got was amazing, checked on us constantly and made sure we didn't need anything. Food is good for MexiAmerican food. Updating my review, as since becoming a mom with a baby, I look for different things in restaurants now. I ran in on a semi busy Thursday night, around 5:30. I asked the girl if they had any tables that we could fit a stroller by that wouldn't be in anyone's way. She was super sweet and understanding, and took us to a perfect table. Our server was nice and efficient. Service was a tad slow, but that's ok, they were busy. Idk why, but the chili con queso was especially good this night. We had the best surprise experience here (other than an obnoxious conspiracy theorist standing down the bar and spewing his tinfoil hat talking points at a volume that force everyone to hear). Staying at the Hampton across the parking lot, Jose Peppers was highly recommended, and that recommendation was correct. We intended to go for a margarita and some chips & salsa. We ended up with the mini chimis and the stuffed jalapeños - both of which were surprisingly great. Living in Texas sometimes creates an arrogance about Mexican food - that no one else can do it right (like the state owns the rights to all Mexican restaurants). Wow, do they really pack them in here. This place is quite large and very crowded on weekends for dinner. The staff was pretty good, and everyone was polite and helpful. The food here was about average, maybe slightly below. The rice was very dry, and the main courses were drowning in cheese and quite greasy. Surprisingly, the guacamole and beams were awesome though. I would definitely get them again. I felt that Jose Peppers was clean enough for the amount of people piled in there, but the atmosphere isn't anything remarkable. It is located right off of 435 near a movie theater and hotel complex, so I am guessing this is a logical place to eat if you head to the movies - it's just really loud, so not ideal for a date. Overall the food was okay the staff very good, but parking was a challenge and it was super busy. We were there almost 2 1/2 hours. as we took our time with drinks at first, however , once we started ordering it was downhill. *Food was ok but it came out very slow and it was literally cold and then after a long wait and some attention from management, it came out ridiculously HOT. *Very poor kitchen management, took about 40 minutes to start receiving food. Was it lost??! *As they brought the food, it was 1 or 2 plates at a time, very unorganized delivery. All the way around the table, back and forth...3 girls in our group didn't get final servings until the rest of us were all done eating and 1 just cancelled their order. *Incorrect orders which caused further delays. *NOW! Our waiter, "Trey" , was wonderful, he never showed any frustrations. He smiled and he was attentive and helpful the entire time we were there. *The manager that helped us did her best to correct those mistakes from the kitchen. *The atmosphere wasn't great, it became very loud but I guess that's a given. *So, when all was said and done, our food was written off and we did appreciate that. *I don't think any of us will go back. Our waitress was super friendly, kind and patient. JP/Cactus Grill has an off menu dish that is my absolute favorite to get when there's a chef familiar with the recipe/they have the ingredients. I hated to ask but it had been SO long and it's one of my all time favorite meals. Unfortunately, they did not have the ingredients on hand but they were so amazing to check/try! Located in the same parking lot as the Hampton Inn which is great if your staying there. I was here alone at dinner during a business trip so the review is written from that prospective. I was seated and served quickly with everyone being super nice. The server also checked on me regularly. I had the Mahi Tacos and they were awesome! So filling, cheesy, and tasty. This is NOT traditional Mexican food but it is the best Tex-Mex/SW American food you will find in KC in my opinion. First and foremost they have hands down the best chips and salsa in town. Add to that the 99cent espinaca and you have a winner right there. Next the service is amazing. Your drink never goes empty, your own private salsa bowl and chip bowl never get low, even on a packed night they get you in within 30 minutes. Love the service here! The food is consistently great. I do not recommend the restaurant for large parties. Made a reservation in person several days prior to bringing in a party of 16. Upon arriving, I was told they had no reservation and only took call ahead reservations. I kindly pointed to the book at the front desk where they had written my name and phone # for that date/time. I also told them the color of pen I had watched them use. They found my information in the book. They then proceeded to tell me that it must have been a new hostess who didn't know their policy. I place the blame completely on the manager who should have known what was in the book and called me if there were problems. It took an hour for them to finally seat my group, all of which were very hungry and tired after a full day of traveling from various parts of the country. Once seated, we had an excellent waitress, and the food was good. It's consistently good. But the service is a little hit or miss thus the 3 star review. I think if they take care of customers a little better then this place deserves 4 stars. Jose Pepper's is a local chain restaurant with a good amount of restaurants in the Kansas City area. Truthfully the food isn't the best, all though I love the Espinaca dip, but the restaurant and the service itself are pretty good. This location is in a strip mall with plenty of parking spots. The inside was clean and well laid out. The tables were spaced well enough apart that all though there was a party of seven behind us we really didn't hear their conversation. The aisles were also wide enough for two people to pass through without having to worry about sidestepping into somebody's table. Our server was a prompt and attentive gentleman who took good care of us. In closing, Jose Pepper's probably won't make your palate go crazy, but is a perfect place it sit and enjoy a meal over good conversation. read more
