Team VP needed a new mattress and we had been dragging our feet because I had entered the research phase of our new mattress. Our old mattress we had purchased online (Saatva) and buying it was one of the most overwhelming experiences I can distantly remember. There are just so many choices in companies and materials and the instant you click on one mattress website you are then bombarded with advertisements for all the mattress websites. It is ridiculous.
Before we were married Mr. MVP had purchased a Jonathan Stevens mattress for himself as his first grown up bed. He went out and laid down on all the mattresses and tested for comfort and decided on a very expensive (and ridiculously comfortable) Jonathan Stevens mattress that lasted a good five years into our marriage. It was a really good bed and we took care of it. When I remembered that my parents also had a Jonathan Stevens mattress they loved, I decided this time around we would skip the online companies and try a local retailer. Mr. MVP was happy with this plan too.
The first thing I did was watch all the videos and read all I could about Jonathan Stevens as a company. They are a local (Grand Rapids) company that makes all their mattress by hand in Michigan. They have been around since 1954 and they use CertiPUR-US certified materials, which I read in multiple places was very important.
I had never been mattress shopping before, so going to a store and laying on beds that thousands of other people had already laid in was nightmare fuel for me. I wore multiple layers of clothing and a hat and just tried not to think about it. Mr. MVP had a great time. The gentleman who helped us got along great with Mr. MVP and was very nice about answering all of my questions. Like every sales person alive I started to get the feeling he would have preferred I go wait in the car while Mr. MVP made the decision because my questions can get a little extensive.
We finally decided on the Manchester pillow top. A non-flippable, but rotatable model with boxspring that cost just shy of $2,000 with tax. We were reminded that the mattress would be more firm when it was in our home because our mattress would be brand new and not one that thousands of people had previously laid on. Also, the showroom is 75 degrees and that effects the firmness of the gel.
There was a slight hiccup with the delivery, which was an accident and Jonathan Stevens corrected the problem. The first mattress was delivered with a hole. They made arrangements to deliver a new mattress with no hole the following Monday. The delivery guys were very nice and on time within the two hour windows they promised.
The mattress itself has been a transition. Exactly as we were told, it is incredibly firm, almost to the point of being uncomfortable. Our Saatva ($1,000) bed was not a bed in a box, but also an innerspring mattress and it felt softer on day one. The Saatva bed also developed issues by year two, so our fancy Manchester mattress is probably just adjusting to his new home. We will keep our fingers crossed. read more
