My experience with Dr. Dounchis was a 5 month nightmare. I was not told of risk factors prior to surgery, had a "spontaneous" femur fracture 7 days after surgery requiring complete revision surgery, was told that the cause of the fracture was due to my age and weight (but never told of this risk prior to surgery). In rehab, nurses, caregivers and therapists could not reach him or his office staff for follow-up instructions. I was unable to reach the office on several occasions, even when my question was urgent. My star rating would be a -2 if possible. Beware. read more

Dr. Dounchis installed both of my knee implants incorrectly. I'm now in the hospital having surgery AGAIN. This time, not by him. The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) from NY has partnered up with NCH so now, the good people of SW FL can finally have first class Orthopedic care. read more

I suspect this this will be an ongoing review with updates and perhaps different stars. Dr. Dounchis name was given to me by my regular Dr. as I was having pain in my knee. I had to do X-rays then MRI to look into my knee further. I had the results posted to my NCH online file. I could not really understand what they were saying . Mrs. K. and I go to Dr. Jon and he flatly states I have a torn meniscus and arthritis in my knee. He said the arthritis was bad enough to warrant a knee replacement. Then we had a huge turn in treatment. He was going to give me a cortisone shot and inject gel into my knee and I should be good to go for 5 years. This is where Mrs. K. and the Dr had a "discussion". She wanted me to have a replacement now vs 5 years from now as I would recover faster now than later. At multiple times he used the term robotic knee replacement procedure. Which means a robot does the surgery and he monitors it. Much to Mrs. K's disagreement with the procedure I decided I would trust Dr. Jon. So far I have had both shots and rehabilitation. I am not pain free but I am way better than what I started with. read more

I rate Jon Dunchis D- He turned out to be my worse nightmare as a orthopaedic Surgen After a few years of shots to my Knee and some PT he recommended that I should have my left Knee Revision , because he thought the Prosthetic L K needed to be replaced, I thought that he knew what he was doing and was going to make my left knee better or at lest the same condition, I was walking great, playing Golf, going up and down stairs. But After his revision left me with a collapsing and buckling Knee, no more golf, no more stairs, and have to ware a whole leg brace, When I complained about the condition that he had left me in, he said well you came to me ! And This passed April 2025 I fell because my left knee buckled and now I have a torn up Right Knee which will need specialist surgery to try and correct my torn up R knee and L knee.. I am not able to walk , play golf , go up and down stairs all because I let Jon Dunchis operate on my left Knee..He screwed up my whole life ! read more

My wife has been trying to speak with the doctor's PA for two weeks after getting an MRI on her knee. For ten years she's had an arthritic knee but as a new patient of Dr. Dounchis, he wanted and new MRI and, miraculously, per the doctor, the knee showed no signs of arthritis somehow. This contradicts all her medical history. She has called repeatedly trying to get clarification and no one who can provide an explanation for this has called her back. I was a very healthy woman, before Dr. Dounchis did a total knee replacement in 2021. The surgery got infected, requiring more surgery and a week being immobile in a "wound Vac" machine. After that, I got a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and was put on a blood thinner and had to have more surgery to put a filter in my artery so the DVT wouldn't kill me. Soon afterwards, I developed serious A-fib, requiring several hospital stays and ER visits before finally having another surgery (ablation), I was in an Infectious Disease Doctor's office right before I was leaving for the summer, when he called Dr. Dounchis, requesting he call him back immediately. He wanted him to check me out for infection from my knee. We both waited in his office for over 30 minutes, and Dr. Dounchis never returned the call, that day or the next two days. I left for up north and was able to scramble around to find another ID Doctor, who monitored my situation. Had to have another surgery to remove the filter as a precaution for the DVT. After all that, I am still on heart medicine and blood thinners, but thought I was finally on the mend. Then a couple weeks ago (2025), I noticed a bulge next to my knee Dr. Dounchis replaced, getting larger, and had pain and was limping. I went to another Orthopedic surgeon who said my knee was unstable and was tearing up the soft tissue around it, causing blood to bulge out the skin around my knee. The end result will probably be a revision...another surgery! Will this nightmare ever end? I cannot, in good conscience, recommend Dr. Dounchis. read more

I am extremely happy with Dr Dounchis and his staff, he explained everything to me in laymen's terms and made sure I had every test possible to make sure I needed surgery. He was highly recommended to me by my family doctor who I totally trust she has known and recommended people to him for over 17 years. I agree m very pleased with the outcome. One complain I do hear is that his waiting time in his offices can be lengthy, I found the same but I believe the reason is he does not rush his patients and gives them all the time they want to answer questions. However on the day of surgery I was not kept waiting at all and everything went like clockwork. Dr Dounchis was there after the surgery to let me know it went well and again at 6 am the next morning! read more

Absolutely the worst care I've ever received. I've had knee problems since I was 10 and seen many orthopedics/surgeons as well as worked as a medical assistant and scribe for one for 8 months, so let me tell you this guy is the worst of the worst. His bedside manner is non-existent. Didn't interact with me at all during my physical exam, didn't explain my injury, didn't explain what my physical limitations should be, didn't explain my x-rays, didn't ask about my daily physical activity or history of problems with the knee, only ordered an MRI at my request since every other time I've massively dislocated my knee I typically have some sort of soft tissue damage, did not outline any form of treatment plan to prevent this from happening again, didn't ask if I had any questions, and rushed out of the room so quickly I didn't even have the time to give him a piece of my mind. Seriously, the physician visit from start to end took 6 minutes and he just dictated to his scribe without saying a word to me. I spent more time and had a better conversation with the x-ray technician than I did Dr. Dounchis. Absolutely shameful behavior from a physician. Thankfully I'm used to these type injuries and have an advanced education in medicine so I at least know to advocate for myself and insist on better care but I can only imagine the hundreds of people he has let slip through the cracks. VERY obviously he is in this for the money to see as many patients as possible and not actually invest any time or energy into someone's quality of life. Also based on my previous orthopedic experience his exam was incomplete to say the least. He did a few basic stability tests, didn't ask about any tenderness along the joint line, didn't watch me walk, and did no kind of comparison to my uninjured leg. Having seen multiple other orthopedics in my life as well as assisted in hundreds of physical knee exams to say he cut corners is an understatement. read more

A year and a half ago I had elective total hip replacement with Dr. Dounchis. I was not yet 60 years old. The day after surgery I asked him how it went and he stated it went well, no complications. Imagine my shock when I saw a cable wrapped around my femur when I finally saw my X-rays about 8 months after surgery. According to him, this cable is a "routine" part of total hip arthroplasty. Numerous surgeons as well as the manufacturer of the cable have since told me that the use of a cable is NOT a "routine"part of a hip replacement . One surgeon told me-"in 15 years of a very busy practice I have only used a cable twice." So... if you would like a cable wrapped around your femur as part of a "routine" total hip replacement, Dr Dounchais is your man. My recovery was long and painful. I made numerous calls to his office to complain of pain and difficulty with walking and was repeatedly told the exact same words each time by his main nurse-"What do you want us to do? Go elsewhere." It is still difficult to simply get dressed each morning. Walking my dog is now a chore versus the joy it once was. If you are contemplating surgery with Dr Dounchis I would STRONGLY advise that you follow the advice of his nurse and-"Go elsewhere." read more

Seems like a pleasant, knowledgeable guy until he does a surgery on you that doesn't go well, then the "nice guy" turns into a bully that would make you believe that you are at fault and responsible due to a lack of participation in your own rehabilitation. When he's worried about a law suit, he will make up negative things to write in his reports that make it appear that the patient is responsible. I read my reports and was shocked that he actually made up lies, like I missed appointments and missed PT sessions, etc. Be careful about this guy! He actually billed medicare for a cortisone injection that he NEVER gave me! He's one of the BAD Dr's read more

While on vacation, my husband (age 50) took a tumble and ended up in the ER with torn tendons in his shoulder. Before we even had the X-Ray results, I looked up top Orthopaedic surgeons on my phone and Dr. Dounchis' name came up. His stellar credentials had me sold, but even better, he and his staff were responsive and extremely professional to solidify my singing his praises. They scheduled an office visit for the following day, Christmas Eve, no less! Dr. Dounchis squeezed my husband into his surgical schedule 4 days later and seamlessly repaired the torn tendons. He was thorough and compassionate, didn't sugar coat and was clear and concise with instructions. Being a doctor's daughter, I am VERY picky about who my family sees for medical attention and I was amazed by Dr. Dunchis. A million thanks! read more

Doctor Dounchis is absolutely amazing. Being new to the area I went with the doctor my Family Practice doc referred me to, keep in mind I don't know my FP doctor either. I was so incredibly fortunate the referral was to Dounchis. Guiding the decision to replace my hip, letting me know what to expect and being straight forward made me feel like I was in good hands but after talking to others I learned he has legend status (and his partner) in SW Florida - the land of hips and knee replacements. Random people I would talk to would ask who my doctor was... when I told them I always heard "your lucky, he's good". Being post op at this point, the surgery went very well, I am only sore from the procedure - zero hip pain. The incision looks great, PT is going well, I am highly confident in the outcome. One more thing that was amazing, the staff at NCH hospital (nurses, CNAs,doctors, PT, lab techs etc) were amazing too, great care givers and kept me in the loop on my progress but every time there was a decision (medicine extra PT etc) they looked in the chart and said Dr Dounchis is very specific on what he wants done and he is the best, this is what we should do. Very happy to say I would recommend him for knees or hips! If you have a choice, choose Dr Dounchis, you will not be disappointed! Full disclosure, I am a young patient for this type of surgery but the comments I heard from others were all ages. read more
