the old one in south Philly was my favorite syote to go to of all time. you could just get lost in the tens of thousands of bolts all at exceptionally low prices. I could spend HOURS there (and did). covid ended that and now there's just this one. it's basically a thrift/ junk store with some fabric in the back. very limited inventory and worse/ NO ONE ANSWERS THE PHONE. it's obnoxious that you can't call and check to see if they have a specific fabric. i miss the old store SSSSOOOO much. bring it back! read more

It's sad how little fabric Jomar has anymore. It was once a real haven for creative stitchers and designers. If I can save you a trip out there maybe this is useful. The one strong thing that they still have is sparkly sequin material in wonderful colors- hence the 2 stars o/w 1 or less. Sad! read more

I only shopped the fabric side. My sewing friends and I took a day trip from the Washington D.C. area to hit a couple of fabric stores in Philadelphia. This was my first time at Jomar. I hear there is another location but this was the better store for the amount of fabrics. The prices here are unheard of in D.C.! We're talking $1/$2/$3 yard. My first thought was how overwhelming this store is. It is large. It is like a warehouse with high ceilings and poor ventilation. Here are the bullet points: Good: * Prices are amazing. * Good quality fabrics. * Great place for lining fabrics. * Huge selection. * Plenty of parking. Bad: (But I qualify this by saying stock must change all the time so what I saw today is not what will be there tomorrow.) * More solid colors of fabric than prints. * Unless specifically stated, fabric content is not labeled. I would say 90% of the fabric there do not have a content label. You have to know your fabrics. With no label, you also don't know washing instructions. Experienced sewists will know. * Place was stuffy with poor ventilation. It was a hot day in July and it was warm inside, even more so when one is wearing a face mask. I do highly recommend this place for sewists even with the "bad" which really isn't that bad. read more

I visited on 12/27/21. I arrived at 10am (store opening on a Monday) and had the entire fabric section to myself. I headed straight for the $2 and $1 sections and then rounded out at the "regular priced" section (still deeply discounted). The woman at the cutting table was efficient and very friendly. She rolled the fabric out and showed me areas of concern/damage and confirmed all pricing. I ended up with 90 yards of fabric (all jersey, light knits, sweater knits) for $118. This shop is worth the trip if you're a hobbyist, small business owner, or someone like me who is building confidence in garment sewing. These prices are amazing and the quality is good, too. I always wash, dry, and fold/roll all fabrics immediately after purchase. I will return. read more

This store defies description, and I love it so much. I love the cheap fabrics, it makes making a test garment out of actual garment fabric very cheap. Sometimes they have top notch fabrics from top notch mills - I recently got a few DKNY fabrics that are almost too beautiful to cut for $4/yard. They are stunning. Otherwise it's great for $2/yard general fabrics and cottons (not quilting cottons, garment cottons thank goodness). They used to have nice linen and cotton sateens etc sometimes, but it's been a few years since I've seen anything like that. My teen prowls the clothing department and there is a lot there to like. They have a lot of gems and not so many duds as you'd expect. It's not just tacky cheap damaged polyester garments. I appreciate Jomar a million ways, and hope it stays in business. It looks like it would be a dump, but is actually an oasis in the city. The staff is completely lovely, they are the nicest people. They work hard to keep it all in order too. read more

So, it's this simple. They sell products that they know do not work. This is theft by deception considering they only ever give store credit. I will only ever buy fabric here from now on. but even if I was only rating the fabric section, it might gain 1/2 a star. Why do they only employ 2 maybe 3 people in the fabric area when huge sales are going on? Lines that last for 40 minutes to an hour equals upset customers that take the dingy atmosphere to downright terrifying. Get me out of here! read more

I had never heard of or had ever been to a Jomar before today and since I pass by this one all the time, I decided to go check it out. Well, I I'm not crazy about this store but their fabric section is great! The retail section is massive...and takes a lot of patience to dig through. I didn't see anything noteworthy--a lot of the items looked outdated. I was expecting something along the lines of Burlington Coat factory but it kind of reminded me of Goodwill...not that there is anything wrong with GoodWill...it's just not what I expected. Having said that, their fabric section totally makes up for any disappointments I had. I didn't realize it was a textile store! They have great selections starting at $1/yard! I found and bought several yards of fabric for only $2.99/yard and I know I've seen the same ones in other stores for at least double. So even though I won't be going back for their retail selection, I will definitely return for any fabric or textile needs I have in the future. read more

Ok so with my last income tax. I made a New year's resolution to become a little more fit. I went in bought a stepper and punching bag. Great value. Despite it missing parts. We improvised and made it work. Cashiers were super polite. It just felt cluttered. And to be honest I left there itching my ankles. Pay attention to what you buy. Check clothes and fabrics for damages as some can be repaired. The prices are really low/modest. Take your time and throughly review your selections. Some items might have stains that are unremovable. They don't have a large men's selection. Nice selection of fabric and women's clothes seem to be the bulk of it. Long annoying review! For many many years I only used Jomar as an outlet for fabric - their selection is broad and varies often, and the prices are fantastic at best, reasonable at "worst" - you certainly get your money's worth. Be prepared to possibly have a wait - especially during a sale period. Jomar is the worst kept secret among seamstresses and tailors in the city (and out of state!) so when people are buying fabric it's not just waiting behind one person wanting a couple yards from one bolt. The clothing quality and selection has increased and improved enough that I also started using Jomars for clothes shopping within the last three years - though I tend to wait for bag sales, the 2 for 5 sale that pops up in around Jan/Feb, and the occasional one day flash sales where they drop the price of a department or two to 1.00 per piece. Keep in mind the pieces come from different possibilities: (this is my theory, anyway) - overstocked turned clearance that another store is selling to the Jomar buyers, left over piece from Trunk Sale events (I didn't know what a trunk sale was until I apparently bought a $250.00 shirt for $6.99). These pieces are 100% fine physically, and their only crime might be that it's last year's Fall vs. this year. - Damaged items that needed to be pulled from retail, Jomar bought all them too. It can range from a gargantuan tear in the bottom of an evening gown to a single mild pull in a sweater. A few years back the "broken zipper" rack was where a lot of folks skilled with a sewing machine or a needle could get 400$ coats for 14.99. These days I have the suspicion that a lot of retail stores are ending up with a lot more of these "damaged" items - once upon a time it was possible to haggle with a shop over a broken zipper, to get the discount at the original point of sale - but either people don't ask anymore or rules have changed about the discounting damaged clothing. - Now they are carrying "Estate" clothing, which is second-hand. It seems to be primarily name brand fashion labels. I started off shopping thrift/Jomars a few years ago because money was tight (hooray for random rent increases in Philly), and now I continue to do it because it simply makes more sense. Cheap clothing is cheap -- something at Wally World for 1.78 or 6.97 is not made out of fabric that can last very long. At Jomar is the best of both worlds - the clothing options are beautiful and of sturdy construction, and it's very inexpensive compared to original retail. As an example I own many many tank tops - I can get them at 1.78 or somesuch at a certain retailer and they'll be single layer, not the best quality fabric and may last a year at best, etc -- or I can buy them from Jomar and get "The Loft" tank tops for 1.99 Jomar's regular price (The Loft originally retailed between 14.99 - 44.99) - and they're not damaged. Yes the stores are packed and look absolutely chaotic (though some of the stores are starting to sort racks by color, which adds a bit of organization and really helps display-wise), yes its a bit musty in some of them (especially in the summertime), but the point is to not pay for the ambiance in the shop, but to pay for the clothes.
