There are two bars, one of which is the sporting area and holds the telly and dart board and is kitted out in dark wood throughout. The other bar is comfier with cushioned chairs and stools, lots of beer paraphernalia on the walls, there is also a real fire which is extremely welcoming on a cold winters afternoon. In the summer you can use the beer garden at the rear which is surprisingly large given the location. It is worth noting that at lunchtime, food is served noon until two, but its best not to get there too late. The food is uber-traditional, from excellent soup and sandwiches with home-cooked ham to more substantial dishes such as lasagne, and just about everything comes with excellent chips. As mentioned above the beer is varied and is also kept exceptionally well in my opinion. There is normally a choice of around five real beers on tap, ranging from a porter to much lighter choices, plus a couple of lagers. All in all, the world would be a better place if all pubs where like the Red Lion!

The food is innovative, interesting and always beautifully presented: having spent a lot of time in Italy, I am often dissappointed with the Italian food in England, but The Three Horseshoes always hits the right note. The seasonally changing menu is always a delight, but I particularly like their use of autumn veg, particularly butternut squash. Whatever buffalo mozzarella they use deserves a special place in heaven, and my boyfriend always manages to find room for their delicately seasoned lemon tart. Well worth a visit - if you're a student, this is definitely one to persuade your parents to take you to.

I figured since I am drinking beer and ordered a fried starter I will go for the bacon and chicken ceasar salad, a lighter option. It was in the two for £10 deal, although my friend opted for a duck wrap that wasn't in the deal. The salad was on the small side and unfortunately did not fill me up, it cost slightly under £8.00. My friend's duck wrap looked amazing. It had nice large pieces of duck and was a rather large wrap, she paid under £5.00 for her wrap, large drink and curly fries. I should have gotten that. We only stayed for one drink and sat at the bar, but I loved the historical feel of the interior, the selection of British ales, and the friendly bartender. They have a wood fired pizza oven, so they do a variety of pizzas, as well as a traditional Sunday roast and other elevated pub fare. I'm told they completely renovated the interior in the last year or so to reduce the drinking area and increase the restaurant dining-in area. I did not try the food while I was there, but from what I see on their instagram, it looks classy and delicious. They also do a lot of events throughout the year, including live music and a big multi-day beer festival in the summer.

So you can imagine the surprise I got from the food and service I received at the barley mow, it was a pub with a difference. When we got there, we got our drinks and were led to our table by a very polite staff. I picked up the menu to choose the usual 'burger' instead; I found a rather interesting menu filled with not only burger but also Indian and Thai cuisine. I was already getting impressed but wasn't there yet, so I decided to go for the Thai style chilli beef with rice even though I was expecting an improvised one. The food arrived quickly and the smell was already making my mouth water so much that I could not wait to tuck into it. The bean sprout was very crunchy and the lean beef was soft to chew. The food was not a lot, but isn't it true that good things come in small sizes. I have to say with sheer embarrassment as I did stereotype pub grubs once, they are not all rubbish and Barley mow cooked the darn best Thai meal I have ever had. It is obviously not a place for a romantic dinner, but good enough for well-prepared meals and a place to have good laugh with your mates.
