There are two bars, one of which is the sporting area and holds the telly and dart board and is kitted out in dark wood throughout. The other bar is comfier with cushioned chairs and stools, lots of beer paraphernalia on the walls, there is also a real fire which is extremely welcoming on a cold winters afternoon. In the summer you can use the beer garden at the rear which is surprisingly large given the location. It is worth noting that at lunchtime, food is served noon until two, but its best not to get there too late. The food is uber-traditional, from excellent soup and sandwiches with home-cooked ham to more substantial dishes such as lasagne, and just about everything comes with excellent chips. As mentioned above the beer is varied and is also kept exceptionally well in my opinion. There is normally a choice of around five real beers on tap, ranging from a porter to much lighter choices, plus a couple of lagers. All in all, the world would be a better place if all pubs where like the Red Lion!

The food is innovative, interesting and always beautifully presented: having spent a lot of time in Italy, I am often dissappointed with the Italian food in England, but The Three Horseshoes always hits the right note. The seasonally changing menu is always a delight, but I particularly like their use of autumn veg, particularly butternut squash. Whatever buffalo mozzarella they use deserves a special place in heaven, and my boyfriend always manages to find room for their delicately seasoned lemon tart. Well worth a visit - if you're a student, this is definitely one to persuade your parents to take you to.

We only stayed for one drink and sat at the bar, but I loved the historical feel of the interior, the selection of British ales, and the friendly bartender. They have a wood fired pizza oven, so they do a variety of pizzas, as well as a traditional Sunday roast and other elevated pub fare. I'm told they completely renovated the interior in the last year or so to reduce the drinking area and increase the restaurant dining-in area. I did not try the food while I was there, but from what I see on their instagram, it looks classy and delicious. They also do a lot of events throughout the year, including live music and a big multi-day beer festival in the summer.

It's a modest pub - not endearingly attractive to look at, nor grand in scope or style, but the efforts of the team running the George is clearly rewarded by the loyalty of the locals. There's a warm welcome, and a good atmosphere of locals interacting with each other. Counting the outdoor seating, there are four distinct areas to the pub, which might at first seem a little old fashioned, but it's probably more evolutionary than dogma: a restaurant area, a lounge bar, and a TV / Games room. I welcome not having the distraction of a TV flickering in the lounge area, but I do wonder if the division of the lounge and restaurant doesn't make them both a little cramped. The food is Thai: a personal favourite. Perhaps they had a shaky start, and perhaps it's still not my favourite thai, but that said, the food is good. It comes in fair quantity, and is reasonably priced too. I did feel a bit done on one occasion however when I ordered a coffee, and was told, for some reason, that it would be instant. I didn't mind that, but I was charged filter coffee price for it! Instant coffee may have improved, but it's still not like freshly ground beans. At least, not in my opinion.
