I went to Up & Up to get a haircut and have my hair colored after seeing it recommended on Reddit…read more I booked an appointment with Indira, and she did a great job! I have long, black hair and wanted some reddish-brown highlights without using bleach. I also didn't want to lose too much of my length. Indira listened to exactly what I wanted and made sure she didn't cut any more hair than what we had agreed on, which I really appreciated. As for the color, since my hair is naturally very dark and we didn't use bleach, the highlights didn't show up as much as we had hoped after the first appointment. Before I even had a chance to say anything, Indira brought it up herself and told me that she wasn't happy with how little the color showed. She asked me to come back so we could try another type of color, which isn't as strong as bleach but would lift my hair color more and help achieve the reddish-brown highlights I originally wanted. After the second appointment, my hair color turned out amazing! I was really happy with the result, and Indira didn't charge me anything extra for having me come back and redo the color. I really appreciated how attentive she was to what I wanted, especially when it came to preserving my hair length and making sure I was happy with the final color. I would definitely recommend Indira for both haircuts and hair color, especially if you have black or dark brown hair!

Do not go to this salon if you have Afro textured hair…read more I have 3C-4A hair type that was styled in a wash n set: The stylist Sam did nothing but try and upsell me on products and service and she had no training whatsoever on how to do Afro curly hair. I felt humiliated sitting there looking in the mirror with those girls trying to pretend my hair didn't look a mess. Sam asking me " you don't like the volume" my hair was matted and dry from her brushing it multiple times. My hair clearly didn't get clean because it didn't absorb any water. Any person working in a curly hair salon should know about porosity and how to hydrate low porosity hair.

I would not recommend it, especially if you have dark hair and are looking for color services…read more My hair color turned out nothing like what I expected. The final result has three noticeably different colors and looks extremely uneven and incoherent. One section is yellowish, another is darker, and the overall color does not blend at all. During the process, they bleached my hair once, and then applied lightener directly onto my scalp without any protection, which caused my scalp to feel painful and irritated. After washing it out, my hair was clearly not light enough for the intended color, yet the just told me they can do nothing about it, and they tried to bleached it partly, but still it is not working. Then they went ahead and applied the color anyway. I was told "it will just be darker at the top," but the actual result looks far worse than that. What upset me most is that they never clearly explained what the realistic final result would be if my expectations could not be met. A professional salon should communicate honestly and let the client decide whether to proceed, and they should have told me at the beginning if they cannot do this service well. Instead, I was charged full price, and I added a 15% tip, despite being extremely unhappy with the outcome, and the total is about 534 but they did not give me receipt or anything with details of charges. This was a disappointing experience and felt very unprofessional. If you have dark hair, I would not recommend coming here for hair coloring.

Very sad. My appointment was at 5pm with Sam and came here little early and she started with my…read morehair root touch up(it is single color, not an expensive style like balayage) at 4.50pm, she was done by 5:12pm. A new customer (with balayage) showed up right away (either she was a walk-in or Sam double booked herself for the same time of my appointment) and Sam started working on new customer's coloring on another seat right by me. I saw her rushing. After 45 minutes(at 6pm), my scalp was burning and got itchy. And told her immediately about it, she told me it was only 35 minutes(not true) and she said that color can stay up to 35-40 minutes. She has never done this, usually washes my hair after 20-25 minutes. And she knows my scalp is sensitive because we had the same issue before with a shampoo she used. She had to change it. After all I paid $75 for bang trim and root touch up, tipped her 15%. I am hoping this was only one time issue and if they fix it I can update my reviews. Today my scalp is still itchy. I have to wash and see if it helps. UPDATE: Washing my hair next morning helped. Found out there are few spots never touched! Poor service this time.

Even before moving, I had done pretty extensive research for a trustworthy hair stylist in anticipation and Studio 89 was one of the top picks; even after monitoring my options over the span of a month, it remained the best. I tried to make an appointment online but had some technical issue so I called instead. This was all done the morning of, and yet they were able to have me come in later that afternoon. It's a clean, small space but it's got everything you can imagine. There's plenty of parking in front of the salon. Tiffany was my stylist, and I was warned that she was going to charge more than the other stylists due to her experience (note -- all stylists charge differently based on this). As a Californian who has paid way too much for the simplest of cuts, I can genuinely say Tiffany's surcharge was 1000% worth it. She was so kind and personable, and that really made the experience. She gave me her honest thoughts and was very communicative throughout the process. She really gave me the exact hairstyle I asked for after barely flashing her a photo, and I'm so endlessly impressed! Despite constantly cycling through short hair, I've actually never liked myself in it very much. However, Tiffany's work allowed me to feel more confident in rocking a short cut than I've ever felt! I've received tons of genuine compliments on her work, and I feel so lucky to have met her. Tiffany -- thanks for the sushi recs and candid conversation, and for being my first friend in St. Louis!
