My favourite of the local caffs back when I lived in the Forest Gate / Stratford area. I had many…read morehappy breakfasts here over the years. What's so good about it? 1) The price. In a city where so many bougie middle-class caffs will charge you £8 for breakfast if you give them half a chance, you can get a decent meal in here for less than a fiver. I'll take that any day. 2) The choice. A huge menu with many breakfast and lunch options. It's easy and cheap to sling together a custom breakfast of your own devising. You'll like the milkshakes, especially banana which is the best. 3) The service. Fast, friendly and unobtrusive. 4) The environment. There are always 3 or 3 newspapers lying around for you to enjoy while you eat your breakfast. Sometimes there's a telly showing music videos or Eastenders if it's the Sunday omnibus - but the volume isn't obnoxiously loud and for Easties, it's muted entirely with the subtitles on. There are some weird paintings of the wall of scenes from ancient Egypt which I spent many mornings wondering at. So mystic and mystifying, it was quite special. Generally speaking the inside is large and bright, and you'll never have trouble finding a seat even when it's busy. All told a great little caff and somewhere I enjoyed going more or less every weekend for a period of a few years. Any negatives? Well the toilet is a little poky and grimy but you're in a caff in Forest Gate, not the Ritz or one of the aforementioned bougie caffs such as you might find in more gentrified areas.

So it's about time I reviewed Belgique. I've lived in Wanstead for upwards to a year now and have…read morehad breakfast at this place at least 10 times, despite the high street having a plethora of other eateries to try out - a testament to Belgique's quality and consistency. Now, I'm not much of a hollandaise person, myself - there's something about the creamy-oily balance that so many establishments get so horribly wrong. I've been burned too many times in the past with hollandaise-gone-bad completely ruining an otherwise perfectly acceptable egg-and-bacon muffin. But my husband is definitely an eggs benedict kind of guy, and on our first visit to Belgique, there was no question about what he was ordering... I've gotta say, the hollandaise here was good. Not only did it not totally creep me out, but it actually wooed me. It made me think that maybe one day in the future I could become the kind of person who would brazenly order Eggs Benedict at any old brunch establishment in London, throwing caution to the wind and trusting that the hollandaise that arrived on my plate would be every bit as luxurious as the one served at Belgique. My husband says it's the best Eggs Benedict he's ever had. And on repeated visits to Belgique, the consistency of its execution is impressive. Now, I still have some trust issues with hollandaise, so I don't order anything typically brunchy, despite Eggs Benedict, Royale and Florentine taking centre stage on the menu. Instead, I've ordered a variety of things, generally egg-based. The scrambled eggs are decadent by themselves - lusciously buttery and perfectly seasoned. Sure, you can make them yourself at home, but there's something that satisfies you in your soul when you roll out of bed on a Saturday and get someone else to cook your eggs for you. Beyond brunch, Belgique has an impressive patisserie. After a decadent breakfast, it's not unusual for me to grab two cakes to takeaway and eat later on a lazy weekend afternoon with a cup of tea at home. Everything I've tried has not even come close to disappointing me, but the Galaxy is a standout. Rich, chocolatey and devilish. It's worth noting that due to Belgique's location in the heart of Wanstead, both babies (in prams) and dogs are welcome - but only outside on the patio. I've come here with both a baby and a dog at the same time, and despite a sign on the door explaining that prams are not allowed, the staff didn't bat an eyelash when we took our baby and dog to a table outside. If I had to pick fault with one thing at Belgique, it would be the coffee. It's not very good, to be honest. But the little distinctive, delicious biscuit that comes on the side balances everything out.

My mate decided to take me here as a very (very) belated birthday treat. I specifically asked to go…read morefor "tea" and so he decided on this place. We both hadn't been here before so we weren't sure of what to expect. We came on a Saturday afternoon, so it was quite busy. Id suggest booking a table if you want to ensure a seat but luckily we got one. The place looked great and on entry, you could see the selection of yumminess calling out to you. We decided to order 'Afternoon tea for 2'. It was only £18, so £9 each, which I thought was a bargain! Unfortunately, my friend didn't like cheese and so didn't each much of the rolls. That only meant more for meee! =D I must add that they also had a good selection of tea. Nom nom nom... A great place for afternoon tea, and the best bit is I needn't travel all the way to Central London for afternoon tea ever again! East London has something good to offer! Alas!

A true Italian café,…read morecomplete with a sleekish sheen, smack on rough-around-the-edges Roman Road; it's almost mind-boggling. Yet, spectacularly, there it is, and it's the real deal. Expect friendly, familiar and helpful counter-service. Expect espresso, cappuccino, even flavoured lattes that are strong, authentic, and worth-sipping. And perhaps most marvelously, expect the best panini in the whole of London. That's a pretty lofty list of expectations to jot down, I realize, but oh, I am so not kidding on that last point. I dream of these panini: substantial, delectably filled, toasted to crispy perfection, and then wrapped up in white parchment like a wonderful present you can't wait to open. Make sure they make you one on the focaccia so that you can savor the depth of flavour and airy texture that the olive oil-laced bread imparts. I almost always go for the roasted vegetables and sun dried tomatoes combination - then ask them to add fresh mozzarella. Divine. I mean, where else in London can such edible excellence be had for less than four pounds?? Caveats: As I said, the place is authentically Italian, which tends to mean the service is slow (but worth it!). Also, I would avoid ordering ice blended coffees here; they usually come out extremely weak and watery - again, authentically Italian, Starbucks this is not. And don't forget (as I have) they're closed on Sunday... most, most unfortunately.

For sandwiches and toasties there is a great selection of breads and fillings. They also do a good range of hot meals like, lasagne and carbonara. The price is very reasonable and they have a few computer terminals in the back for internet access. Chicchi is a great café and totally unexpected for the area.
