Tucked away with a view of the pub, it was still loud and warm but not crowded. Our server was extremely attentive, checking in every time someone arrived and throughout the evening. Service was quicker than expected. The food and drink menu was extensive. With fare from Belgium, mussels and fries were a must for me. I went with the miso and ginger broth, super flavorful and a little spicy. Loads of mushrooms tucked in with the mussels. They were smaller than you will find in Brussels but delicious. Bread and fries to boot! The beer selection has all the European staples and something for everyone, even wine lovers like half of our group. I had a tasty brown ale, very rich and deep. Overall it was a good evening, save for the bathrooms under construction where I saw a dead cockroach in the toilet. Skip the loo if you can!

One of those places that you have to go to at least once in your life…read more This Belgian (yes - Belgian) restaurant is run, owned and chefed by Frederic Desmette, a completely and utterly hat-stand chap. A character would typify him totally. If he likes you, then you will be allowed to stay, if not, then you will be encouraged to leave. The restaurant is almost a hobby of his and the food is extremely rich. He scours the continent for ingredients and often returns from a trip to France or Belgium with his van laden down with produce. An almost liquid cheese that his excitedly boasted was 100% pure fat, for example. The wine list is huge and well priced - it's the only place that I've ever had a red dessert wine. Expect a lot of chicory, a lot of cream and a non-stop commentary from Frederic himself. The building used to be a pub and still retains a lot of that character. It's also a little awkward to find. For a truly one-off gastronomic experience, I urge you to run the gauntlet of Frederic and give La Chouette a crack.

It's hard to describe exactly what it's like (since it's different from any other soup I've tried) but suffice it to say we both (my boyfriend and I) absolutely loved it. This was on a road trip my bf and I took to Portsmouth btw, and I want to come back to the city just to go to this restaurant again! :) We also got a Croque Reuben (sandwich for me, large portion), Pork Belly (for him), Manniere Moules et Frites (mussels dish - Classic moules with garlic butter, white wine and parsley, served with toasted sourdough), Brugse Zot Sport (beer for him), Kwak (Kwak amber beer, cream, orange and fennel for me) and Orangina. The main dishes of pork belly (Pork belly slowly roasted in Lindemans Apple beer, served with Stoemp and seasonal vegetables, finished with apple beer and mustard reduction) and Reuben sandwich (Grilled sourdough sandwich with Gruyère and Cheddar, sliced pastrami, sauerkraut, gherkins, Emmental and Russian dressing) tasted great, and portions were really generous! The Good: The beer is authentically Belgian/Dutch. The nibbles too. The bar staff are friendly. The couches are comfy. The Bad: The bar is a little bit Disneyland Antwerp. The staff aren't equipped with any Dutch. The French radio piped in is very annoying after an hour or so. The Ugly: There is a God awful high-pitched whine when the beer is being poured from tap. So if you're Dutch or Vlaams and you're missing some home comforts stop in, bud don't expect this be become a home away from home.

The coffee is great and the cakes add inches to your waistline as soon as you walk in the door, so be careful! There is also a great selection of savoury sandwiches, falafel etc.
