I went into Johnson locksmith today in inquire about re-keying and installing a new deadbolt. The guy behind the counter asked what brand of deadbolt I had. He begins to give me an unsolicited review of how bad my deadbolt is. He then asks if I new what the weak point is and I told him I knew and said what it is. Even though I was able to answer his question he went on with his rant. Bottom is I knew and didn't care. We never got to any of the services. I went home and started doing it myself of which I am capable, but wasn't in the mood to start a new project. read more

Great all around. Very helpful and truly knowledgeable. We needed to change out apartment's door key ASAP. They didn't have anyone available to come to our place until a week later, but the owner understood our situation and explained to us how to remove the crucial part of the lock so we can bring it to him and he can rekey it for about 20$. We did and can't be happier! Others tried to convince us that the whole lock needs to be replaced (it's around 1000$ just to buy a lock), refused to give us even ballpark estimates (we had to pay 90$ for them to come out and tell us the price), called us 20 times at 10pm demanding us telling them our address even though we told them to stop and never contact us again (this was seriously creepy and scary). I don't know if Johnson's Locksmith is more expensive than others or about the same. And I don't care. If they charge more I'm happy to pay it. Because this is the company I can trust, and I want them to be in business for another 100 years. I'll never go to anyone else, and I'll recommend all my friends to go here and only here. read more

I hired A and A Management to replace two locks and re-key one so that only one key was needed for both. I asked for security-length screws of 3-4" inches be installed in each doorframe. None of the lock handles or deadbolts opened or closed without significant effort. A and A said that the new deadbolts could not be installed. The bill was $370. I call Johnson Locksmith to correct the problems. Brian came over and explained several installation errors, installed the security screws, replaced the deadbolts, and even fixed another door with a problematic lock. This price was fair, and Brian is clearly an expert at his craft. Brian also explained that there are many people who call themselves locksmiths who are not. I did some research and learned that one has to earn an Illinois locksmith license to practice, and that the license is searchable by name. Illinois requires a thorough criminal background check and fingerprints, too. There is a reason why Johnson has been in business for so long. I'm glad that I finally found out why. read more

I came into the store today with an cylinder tumbler lock & needed it to be rekeyed to another commercial key cylinder such as Corbis that Clark Devon Hardware said was not possible due to compatibility issues but Brian an employee at this store painstakingly searched through dozens of cylinders and was able to find one compatible and also rekeyed the tumbler so that all my commercial tenants could use the same key that already opens the main door. So I had ordered a motorcycle blank key from Bulgaria that I needed to copy. Went to a couple places and they couldn't. Came here and Patrick and the other gentlemen were extremely welcoming. I handed over the keys and after about 15 seconds he came out and handed me the keys back all finished. I said "how much do I owe you?" The folks here are incredible! My wife had an issue with an old combination safe in our house a few years ago, and they got the problem taken care of almost immediately at very little cost. I knew that the problem had been resolved, but had forgotten who had helped her when a situation with our front door deadbolt came up about a month or so ago. By mere coincidence, I called the folks at Johnson's to schedule a service call for our house. The gentleman who answered the phone asked me if I felt comfortable removing the lock from the door (which I did), and suggested I bring it to their location so they could take a look at it. To make a long story short, they gave me a replacement piece that cost about $3 (instead of a service call that would have cost me at least $100), which completely corrected the problem. We've been using them for years and they always do a good job, at a reasonable price. Yesterday the lock on my motor-scooter's gas cap was acting really flaky. I contacted a 24-hour company in Glenview. Owner came out right away, but took a couple of weeks to send a quote, claiming simple parts needed had to be ordered online. I realize now he was going to do a lot of unnecessary work and have me pay for it. I finally called Johnson's and in a couple of days services rendered and technician had parts already in his van. I was disappointed to hear my mother's story about making a copy of her mailbox key. When she tried it, the wrong key blank had been used and it didn't go in the lock. They redid the key. The new key fit the lock but didn't work, didn't unlock the lock. When she went back, they got upset at her (like SHE did something wrong!?) When she asked for her money back, they got really mad. The owner came out and yelled at her before finally throwing her money at her. My mom is an 80 year woman who just wanted a key that works. This company is really great. I had an old door with a very rare lock that wasn't working. I tried replacing with a newer version which took forever to find and the new lock did not fit in the current holes. I wasn't happy about making new holes in my door so I tried finding a locksmith who could repair the original lock. After several locksmiths, this company was able to repair it and was very reasonable with the cost, its hard to believe but the repair was cheaper than the new lock i had purchased. Its great to have businesses like this still around. The staff are also friendly and they greet you as they walk by. There is an older gentleman who sits in the front office and he's got a great sense of humor which makes the business more inviting. read more

When I called Johnson Locksmith (they were recommended by my condo association), the guy on the phone was very polite, understanding, and gave me great customer service. We scheduled an appointment immediately and he sent over the owner's son, Glenn, to our place. Now, their price to come out was a bit pricier - $60, but definately well worth it. He took a look at the situation and assessed it thoroughly. He then, went ahead and replaced everything for a total of only $100 (we were quoted at $300 previously). Unfortunately, he accidently installed the wrong cylinder in our lock. We called him as soon as we found out (maybe 15 minutes later) and he came back immediately and fixed it for us free of charge. Wonderful customer service, wonderful job on our lock and I"d recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat. read more

After we closed on our house, we realized that we had not looked in the garage during our final walk through. So, we open the garage doors and find that there's a truck parked in the garage. The attorney says the owner doesn't know anything about it. The agents say they'll take care of getting it removed. We close and lock the garage, and leave for the day. The next day, we come back to find that the truck has disappeared from the locked garage. First, we're happy that it's gone, but then we're a bit upset that someone still has keys even though "all" the keys were turned over during closing. We had hoped to wait to change the locks until after the contractors finished doing some work in the house, but this incident lit a fire under us. We needed the locks changed STAT. Johnson locksmith came out and suggested just changing the locks on the inside doors, but leaving the old locks on the storm doors. Even if someone still has the old keys, they can't into the house, and it will save us money. Nice point! Thanks for helping to save us money because it was still fairly expensive)! Best place to have your locks serviced. Have an old antique toolbox that needed the lock adjusted as the bar became loose. Fellow room Johnson's Lock came out to my car and adjusted it for me right then and there in less than 5 minutes. Best part was he did everything in a friendly, professional, non-condescending manner. They do not stand by their work at all and are totally unethical. Very surprising for a locksmith on the Northshore. I paid $329 for them to install a new door knob and lock on our back door. After locksmith finished, and I opened and closed door several times, I mentioned that the doorknob grinds and crunches when you open the door. Glenn said he noticed that also, and that if it doesn't loosen up in a week or so to call him back. It never loosened up and I called back and he came over again, but this time he said oh that's normal (not what he said when he initially installed it and noticed it himself). I said that can't be normal, it seems like there is something defective with this, and I asked if we can get different one that works properly. He said that he has another one in his truck, but he's not going to try it b/c this is normal. I then said so you won't do anything about the knob your ordered and installed that doesn't work properly, and you noticed the problem with yourself last week? He said they could put my old hardware back on, but I would not get a refund for the $90 labor to put it on or the $92 service fee that they charge to come out to your house. Beware! read more

I LOVE THESE GUYS!!!! Tim was outstanding, not only with customer service but with his commitment to do an incredible job. Not only did he work past 5 PM to make sure the job was done right but had to come back the next day to make sure it was working in proper order. Our iron gate to our backyard of our condo building was no longer shutting on it own with the swing arm and the lock broke after years of outdoor elements. Tim fixed the lock immediately and then changed the swing arm that gave him considerably more hassles. He would not leave until he felt it was working 100% to our satisfaction. THANK YOU JOHNSON LOCKSMITH! So, I took the dog out for a walk and the minute the door closed behind me, I realized, uh oh the keys are on the counter..... and the door locks automatically. I never forget my keys and this is very distressing. I go downstairs, ask the doorman to call a locksmith. The guy on the phone was very professional and said he would have someone over in 10 minutes. Hooray! The guy they sent (I think his name was Steven) was really friendly and chatty and tried several different methods of opening the door. This was pretty sweet to watch because I am a huge nerd who has a rogue on Warcraft - ha! Anyway, third method worked perfectly! This metal rod thing that went under the door. Charlie and I were sooooo happy to be back inside that there is no way this place was getting less than 5 stars. The whole thing cost 91 dollars, and they take credit cards. This was so worth it. With Mr. N. being out of town, we had no other option. Steven even told me that if I wanted the locks changed, that in the next 30 days it would be 25 dollars. On July 4th, after watching the fireworks at the beach and having a great night with the family, we arrived home to realize we had accidentally locked ourselves out of our place. It was midnight, on July 4th. We ended up calling Johnson and leaving a void mail. Within 30 minutes, there was a guy at our door with all his gear. He was very nice, friendly and professional.
