I must've had the smallest order ever for a marine chandlery -- the older boat I bought had an Airmar fathometer transducer and speed log. A new speed log will come with a plug for pulling the log to clean off marine growth. Mine was missing. Airmar uses Gemeco as a distributer and Gemeco had two California sales reps. The part was backordered, but I wanted to get in line with an order. The San Diego rep was a joke -- never answered their phone and never responded to voicemails. I called Johnson Hicks and was talking with Scott right away. He got my order going, but in the meantime found an older plug on a shelf deep in their warehouse and asked me if I wanted to give it a try. It arrived in 3 days, but was not a fit. I shipped it back, and in the intervening time, the correct part became available and was immediately shipped to me. The level of service I received for a $29 part was exceptional. I am set with all of my older electronics working properly, but if I ever need to replace anything, Johnson Hicks will be my first call. read more

Joe is a guy that would take the shirt off his back to make sure you get treated right... he stands behind his work and word! His installer is 2nd to none/ he really knows his stuff! Really disappointed with the service I received from this company! Over the years I would stop at their electronics booth at the Fred Hall fishing show and got good advice and felt confident enough to buy garmin monitor,radar and transducer totaling about $3500.00. I recently wanted to upgrade my transducer to 1 kw flush mount and found airmar to be the product to use. I mistakenly thought J.H. was only a Garmin dealer and I could not purchase this piece from them. I purchased the aimar transducer and it did not come with a special cable so I called J.H. to ask them where to buy such product on the west coast. The salesman said that he had one in stock but it was in a kit and since I did not purchase the transducer from him he would not sell me the cable . He explained that he could not compete with the prices that they were selling on line and it would be expensive. Remember I never asked price I just wanted to purchase the cable and get it here quickly. Unfortunately for them I will not be spending my money there ever again and through all their catalogs in the trash. Customer service is number one , within reason and I didnt feel giving that type of lecture was appropriate. read more

We bought a Raymarine C-80 several years ago, paid 5,000 + for the unit and installation. The problem is we don't leave it on the boat. Right before we go out we put the unit on the boat. Twice now we broke the pins for the power cable. Which means it has to go back to the factory for repairs and it cost 350 and I can't go fishing for at least a month. So I called Johnson Hicks looking for a solution, he said he had none. I asked why he didn't warn me before I bought the unit form him, his response " Aw come on" The he said he would look into the matter and call me right back. He never called back. So I called Ron Jones at Star Marine, very helpful. Knew what the problem was and had a solution. From now on he gets my business. read more

my review is simple called and sent them a list of equipment I would like to purchase and install on my boat. $20-25k should have been the ballpark. you would think I would get a call back that day but no. and not the next day or the next week or the week after. I called and asked Guy if he was ever going to get me the quote and he said, "I think I emailed that to you, well I can't find it but I'm sure I did" my response, "I would think for a quote this big you would call me to make sure I received the quote." no response . I asked to speak to Joe. said he would leave a msg but he is really busy on a boat and when he gets back he has other things to do. This shop is very knowledgable they know their products well and only sell top notch equipment. I recently took navigation class though the USCG auxiliary. One of the classes was spent at the Johnson Hicks store, where Scott showed us all of the equipment and answered all of our questions. Johnsoon Hicks provided this to the USCGA at no expense. Sure, parts of the class were sort of an infomercial and they got their plugs in , but it was a great experience and I will definitely use them for our marine electronics purchases. I really like having someone I can call to get advice on what to get or how to operate or change my electronics. You can't get that through West Marine. Joe and Gaylen have always been great but Scott lately has really been the star. He really enjoys the stuff and it shows. With a simple phone call or email my question is answered. I took the Coastal Nav class where Scott took time for a couple of hours to go over all the different electronics. I purchased and had installed a Garmin Autopilot paired with a Raymarine Drive unit and Rudder Reference sensor from Johnson Hicks totaling $7,272.26. It has never worked well. in fact, even at it's best, it has never performed as well as the 20 year old B&G unit that it replaced. When it was installed, I was told that it would integrate with my existing network wind instrument, but the installer couldn't make it work so it forced me to buy a new wind sensor as well. Between Johnson Hicks, Garmin and myself, the compass sensor has been relocated 3 times, found to be defective and replaced and it still has a weak magnetic environment signal. The rudder reference indicator was replaced as well. I receive error messages constantly on the display head and the wind instrument only works about 90% of the time as well. I now have about 50 hours invested in replacing or relocating various components, repeating set up and sea trials as well as countless hours on the water trying out various gain and acceleration limiter settings. I've had many autopilots over the years and understand how to set up and use them fairly well. This one still does not steer well. I've called Johnson Hicks 3 times in the past few weeks and still have not had a return call with any attempt to correct the situation. Not even an acknowledgement. I hate that I have to write a review, but if it helps someone else - or - stimulates some response from an otherwise unresponsive business it will have served some purpose.
