Item for alteration: off the rack cotton trousers needed waist to be taken in. Draw string. I presented item to staff and told them what I needed. Response: "What do you want us to do?" ? Result: see photos. I showed the result to someone else who is a fashion expert. I will not post their response here, suffice it to say they confirmed my suspicion of poor quality. read more

If I could give less than a star I would. I trusted this place with my suit for a wedding. I planned to pickup Tuesday (today at 9 am) it is now 1030 I took a half day at work and it's a 4 hour drive round trip. I won't be back in the area and am uncertain what to do. I want to avoid ruining this mans business with my hundreds of thousands of followers so I'll give him the benefit of doubt here and hope he overnights it or mails it to me in the next 4 days. This shop hemmed up my pants in one day at the perfect length, must be 5 star! I was reading reviews about tailor shops in Ithaca and called a few, only John would finish it the same day for me, so that's where I went. I went there at 9:30am and they measured the right length for me, told me to pick up after 3pm, and it was done! Though it's a easy hem (no linings), but for such a short time, they only charged $15. I should start by saying that John is a nice guy and a good tailor. The problem is, the business is disorganized to the point that it affects the quality of service. If I take in more than one or two pieces for alterations or repairs it can take 4-8 weeks to hear back on progress and I often have to call to check up on what the deal is. Sometimes they have forgotten about my orders (sometimes temporarily losing them), and then in a rush to catch up after I call and prod, the work can get sloppy or misinterpreted. I had a shirt tear repair returned to me with a hole in the stitching; it just hadn't been finished and the new seams weren't matched on the other sleeve. A jacket I brought in for a liner repair had the thread pull out after one use. If requests aren't designated by tailor tacks or chalk they're forgotten: for example, I asked for two jackets to have shoulder pads shaved down and they were completely removed. Sometimes I don't feel like my pieces are well looked after: I had a silk jacket returned to me with a safety pin (not a tailoring tack, so big hole) poked through the sleeve with excess buttons attached in a box, pulling the fabric down which made the hole bigger. I liked supporting his business because he's technically talented when it comes to working with suits and prices are low, but I've reached the breaking point and am finding a new tailor. I think if you have straightforward requests and a low volume of work you want done it should be fine, but otherwise consider alternatives. read more

I've used John's several times over the past year to hem pants, and while the length has been fine, the stitching on my most recent pair of pants has been irregular and puckered. It doesn't look professional at all to me. Sadly, this will be the last time I use John's. read more

Not only was he so nice and friendly, but he only charged me $15 for something I took elsewhere where they told me it would be $100. He did excellent work on it. I would highly recommend this place!
