a piece of meat on a piece of brown paper

So disappointed in the order that I had delivered on Saturday. Two of the three sirloin steaks were fine - but the third was black and moldy. The stir-fry beef was old - black and moldy. All four pieces of osso bucco had freezer burn and looked old, with discoloration which looked like old meat - mold. Instead of risking getting sick, I threw all four pieces in the trash. Vinny the owner got rid of low quality meat and gave them to me. I did tell him that I needed the meat delivered because of macular degeneration and I feel he thought - oh the lady with bad vision won't notice the spoiled meat - let me pass the problem to her. - and he charged me $301.00. Not nice - back to Barthes in New Providence or Shoprite in Stirling.

We hit John's tonight for a nice hi end piece of meat . We bought a two pound peter Luger steak I guess it's from the famous peter Lugers for the price we paid . That's the only drawback I see at John's is the price other wise his meats are on point and top notch but once again at a price . Place is clean and neat nothing fancy .

Tomahawks

Ordered three tomahawk steaks for a summer cookout. Dry aged steak is in a totally different league from the steak you get at a grocery store! John was very helpful on the phone, and delivery (within Scotch Plains) was painless.

Time for an update. I've been here about a dozen or so times now and I am still a major fan. Ive bought steak, chicken, bacon and pork here and I was happy with it all. I am pretty much the ideal shopper for this place. I feel pretty good about my ability to tell a great steak from an OK one. I have worked hard to ensure myself the luxury of spending a little extra something if I feel its worth it. I am the kind of person who feels stongly about putting her money back into the local community. If you are the person who says a steak is a steak is a steak then dont go here. For example you can purchase a strip steak from the local chain grocery store for lets say about 12 bucks...at Johns it will run you $18 now thats 50% more ey? In my head I would pay $3 more to give my money to a local business and easily $5 more for a prime (not choice) cut of meat that has no perservatives and has never been frozen. If you are like me then check the place out, If you are on a tight budget or just don't care all that much about the quality of your meat then don't....got it?

Outstanding customer experience. Simply the best meats at a fair price. We shop here at least once/week.

Compared to the other old school butcher shops that serve dry-aged beef they're typically similar in price and just much better in overall quality.

Recently I made it a point to visit to pick up a sandwich for lunch and I'm really glad I did! Al's is very clean and welcoming. When you walk in the cashier counter is to the left, set at a right angle to that is the deli counter where sandwiches are assembled. The menu is mounted on the wall towards the back. To the right is a seating area. Across from the cashier is a fridge with various pasta dishes ready to heat up and eat along with some baked goods and lots of different kinds of chips to go with your sammich. I wound up ordering the Red & White Russian which includes Roast Beef, Turkey, Swiss, Horseradish, Deli Mustard, Lettuce, Tomato & Onion. You can have it pressed by request but I did not do so. I also ordered a side order of macaroni salad. The Red & White Russian was really good! The size was perfect and the bread was soft and chewy. There was a good amount of meat and cheese and I really liked the mustard and horseradish flavors. The macaroni salad was great. I would definitely get both of these again! I'm glad I made it a point to stop at Al's and I plan to do so again in the future!

Absolutely in love with this deli that just got put on my radar. Thank you Yelp for bringing the…read moreall too perfect Red & White Italian (with added avocado) to my radar. We called ahead for a couple sandwiches and they were ready within 20 minutes on a Saturday morning. That's pretty impressive as we near the days of summer sandwiches. When I arrived they still needed a few minutes to finish our order up, but I needed that order to nervously make sure I was picking chips out that everyone would like in the car. They said they would be fine with anything but I don't believe anyone would be fine with just any chip. I ended up getting like 6 bags for 3 people. We left with a heavy bag of sandwiches and chips and turned this into a car meal on our way down the shore. It was the perfect sandwich! The red & white had chicken cutlet, greens, roasted red peppers, & moz on a ciabatta bread and I added avocado. Delicious and will be getting ahead. This would be a great spot for lunch and reading the reviews, it looks like they also make a great breakfast sandwich and they cater. With many more drives down the shore, I will need many more car sandwiches. Happy to know a great spot to get them!
