I asked the concierge in my hotel where I should have lunch. He recommended Johnny G's. It's a fairly big restaurant ... it has a pub section (where I sat) and a dining room in front. It has a big music theme. I ordered the Rockabilly Burger and fries ... mozzarrella cheese, bacon, tomatoes, pickles and burger sauce. There was a massive pile of shoestring fries. They were good but could have been hotter. I just had a few of them. I focused on the burger which was really good and hearty. Yum! Service is so-so ... not all that quick and indifferent. An excellent meal at about $10.50!

This restaurant is a family owned business. The interior was quite spacious. The service provided to our table was excellent. I had a large party and we were able to call in adavnace to book a reservation. The food was good for what you pay for. Very affordable and came in large portions. I tried some of the nachos and they were decent. I also had the chicken fingers and fries, which is $5 on Mondays. Their milkshakes were tasty as well.

This place rocks! Thais family own and operated restaurant bar and it is awesome. The walls are covered in images of famous music icons from past and present. It's clean, bright and fresh with a warm inviting appeal but you have to experience for yourself to know what I mean. We went there both nights that we were in town and they took really good care of us. The son of the owner was running the place and did an outstanding job at making us feel welcome and he was totally the reason for us coming back a second night. The drinks were made to perfection and there was never an empty glass in front of us. The food was out of this world good. I'd like to personally thank the staff for making our stay in Winnipeg a fun and memorable one. We'll definitely see you next time we're in town. Keep rocking it!

Service was deplorable. Food ok. Had to go up and ask where our food was and to order another beer.

Not bad. A lot more selections than your average pub. Pretty good food with large portions at a great price!

Horrible. Didn't get seated because the server was too lazy to clear off the tables. Too busy on her cell phone

Staff was very friendly and helpful, and the place was rather lively even on a Friday afternoon…read more In terms of the food we shared an order of poutine and their blackened chicken fettuccine. Poutine was decent - not the best I've had in town but not the worst. The portion was very small, and I was surprised to see it priced almost as much as an entree on the bill - they don't have it on the menu a la carte but you can upgrade a side of fries to poutine for $4. Since the pasta dish didn't normally come with fries I asked if they could just do a side of poutine and they said yes (and then charged $14 for it). It wasn't worth it. The blackened chicken fettuccine was disappointing. Our host highly recommended it, and it's a dish I generally enjoy enough I even make it at home. The blackening rub they use had almost no spice, which to me defeats part of the point of "blackened" chicken - the taste was more on the herby side. The noodles themselves were bland and the sauce was almost non-existent - sadly underseasoned. I chopped the chicken up into tiny bits and mixed it all together so that they flavors from the chicken could add at least some excitement to the pasta, but while it helped it didn't quite save the dish. Overall the experience was fairly mediocre. Maybe I should have gotten a burger, but I went with the host's recommendation instead for a dish I normally quite enjoy and came away disappointed. The price of the side of poutine is on me - I didn't ask ahead of time. But it came out to be nearly double what I'd expected for half as much as I'd thought it would be.

Tip: The scotch eggs are delicious…read more The Toad in the Hole is a pub and restaurant in Osborne Village. It was there for years before I had moved to Winnipeg and this neighbourhood. It was open late on most evenings along with Papa George's that was up the street. The latter is no longer there. This eatery has gone through a bunch of changes over the years. When I was new to the neighbourhood, this eatery had two floors. The top floor had a traditional bar and restaurant. The lower floor also had a bar, but the artsy, younger folks spent time hanging around there. This place went through some renovations. If I remember things correctly, the basement got renovated and everything was on the top floor for months. The Toad in the Hole used to be on the east side of Osborne Street. When Buccacino's closed down further south and on the west side of Osborne Street, this eatery took the space over and has been there for a few years now. I have yet to see what the space looks like. Part of me wants to remember what Buccacino's was like before it shut down. The other part of me wants a scotch egg from The Toad. I love scotch eggs. I had my first one here. I remember the egg being soft-boiled. When you cut through the breading and sausage, the yolk would slowly ooze out. The scotch egg was deep-fried to perfection. Yum! I also liked getting its namesake. It was two sunny-side eggs in grilled Texas toast. It came with hashbrowns. You could choose from sausage, bacon, or ham as your protein side. I enjoyed the toad-themed breakfast menu besides the Toad in the Hole: - Tadpole (two eggs without being fried within toast) - Big toad (think English breakfast with baked beans, grilled tomato slices, and all protein sides) - Senor toad (tortillas topped with refried beans, sunny-side eggs, guacamole, pico de gallo, and cheddar) - Vegan senor toad (similar to the regular one, substituting the eggs for grilled veggies and the cheddar for a vegan version) The fish and chips are also decent here. The fish is pickerel, which was different than cod or halibut. It tasted fresh, which I loved. I don't recall ever having dessert here. I don't remember if it even served any! I hope that the pub is nice. It used to have happy hour deals that were decent. I want scotch eggs now! (359)

The Grove is an British-influenced pub in the Grosvenor/Stafford area, and it has definitely made a name out of themselves with how busy it was when I went with a friend. I initially craved a burger, but the diverse options in the menu threw me for a ride in trying something else that's not a burger. I ended up having a pizza from them instead, in particular the Grove Pizza. The Grove Pizza comes with garlic oil, mozzarella, fig jam, prosciutto, arugula, balsamic reduction, truffle oil, and pecorino. The pizza was excellent and of perfect personal size. I would say however they overloaded a bit too much on the arugula, to the point where I can't see or taste much of anything else on the pizza. The atmosphere was slightly ruined by the fact we had someone behind us having an extremely loud conversation to the point everyone in our section was able to hear it. I definitely recommend this place and would return. Hopefully it'd be a better atmosphere next time I'm here.
