Now that's a good hot sauce selection.

For a place with Lobster in the name, I was surprised to only see two menu items with the crustacean. I got the roll. At $20 its certainly one of the more expensive sandwiches in my recent past, but hey, that's Canadian Lobster bulging out of that toasted St Marlo bun. And for $3.50, I was sure to add in a side of thrice-cooked hand cut chips (made fresh daily). And yes, they're licensed. The beer menu offers up a few of each of Young Henry's and 4Pines. Sydney staples. With a menu boasting about their fried chicken, and half a dozen or so other sandwich offerings (including pulled lamb and soft shell crab) there's quite a few reasons to head back to Johnny Lobster.

I had to order the lobster roll here and it didn't disappoint. The lobster was succulent and the potato salad with pancetta was unexpected but delicious all the same. It was all piled into a soft white bun and I paired this with their fries. After writing this review my mouth is salivating and I want to get another roll now ;)

While we were there, a few more groups came in and it got a bit busy. The owner came over to our table to talk about the menu and greet us. He gave great advice into how big things were and what was the right size for kids (I had 4 with me) and for the youngest, he made homemade Calamari rings for a child's meal - and they were so delicious we were all circling the leftovers! The rib decision, half rack or whole, was quickly solved as I was instructed that a half would be more than enough. Indeed it was! It was the size of a full rack anywhere else! I took half home and enjoyed them for lunch the next day! One ordered the chicken burger and it was gorgeous, marinated and grilled, not breaded and fried, and it was also quite big, and half went home. Two of the girls split the big burger which had two patties and all sorts of lovely toppings. It was delicious and the owner split the burger at the table for the girls. We also had started with the loaded chips, which were loaded with cheese, bacon and whatnot, super yummy, but there was a lot there and it didn't get finished. I would definitely recommend to anyone, and we are looking forward to another visit soon.

Indoor interior is a mixture of all sorts - which i think adds to its charm. The barista mentioned that he gets most of the various items from an antique shop in Redfern. The tables are covered in gloss newspaper style prints mostly black and white with some colour - very interesting. The barista is very friendly and chatty - i forgot to get his name. Ordered a cappachino and the Mushroom Bruschetta - Roast mushroom, pumpkin puree, proscuitto, pesto and eggs. WoW! Amazing! Didn't have to wait too long also for the meal. By the time i left all tables indoors was taken and they had a few people waiting on take aways. After ordering i noted that they serve milo milkshakes and freshly squeezed juices! Will definitely have to come back to try those and their warm winter salads. Overall, great first time visit! Will be back!

The first thing you notice when you walk in is the south side wall art - black and white illustration circle pattern with a retro design feel. It's pretty 'cool' for these parts. The dark timber table and chairs and polished (both in presentation and literally) table setting gives this restaurant an instant luxury dining feel whereas the outside seating area on the main road and side street give it more a chilled cafe feel. The menu is certainly on the fancy end of food standards. Here's my picks to give you an indication of quality: fresh oysters with a Campari and lime dressing for starters (one dozen for $36), Roast baby beetroot with Mt Vikos feta, purslane and truffle honey for entree ($17), Duck confit with frisee salad, lardons and mustard dressing for main ($28), Rocket salad with organic almonds, black pepper and lemon for sides ($8) and an "Orgy" of summer berries, crisp meringue and raspberry sorbet ($14). Oh yeah... it's a nice menu indeed. There's a comprehensive wine and beer list but you can take your own bottle of wine for $10 corkage. Coffee is so so. Breakfasts are also meant to be pretty dam fine. Staff were pleasant and efficient enough but I didn't find them overly warm. Also I'd sit looking inwards towards the restaurant as the streets outside are pretty drab.

The two that served today seemed self absorbed and arrogant. The Spring special did not have a vegetarian option and they weren't willing to substitute anything either. I am not a vego but my husband is and I always look at the options. (Only one entree was vego and no mains) I decided against the special and ordered off the a la carte menu. The spaghetti was almost $30 (special was two courses incl wine) so that seemed a lot. Two in our party ordered it and it was swimming in OIL and tasteless.... They whisked away the plates and did not ask if anyone enjoyed their meals, so it seems they don't care what you think. With average meal prices that high, I would love genuine service and generous serves of delicious food - none of that at High Street Bistro! Save the effort and go to Crows Nest :) P.S I also bought a Cudo voucher a few months ago but after multiple tries I was unable to use it before they expired. Only could be used at very specific times I guess but they weren't willing to say when that was.
