    Octopus with fries
    Imbri S.

Bondi is expensive, let's just get that out there. That being said, Bondi Surf Seafoods was about as reasonable as you can get in a tourist-heavy, beachfront food establishment. From the looks and sounds of our fellow customers as we sat at the tiny rear bar, this is where the local workers stop in to get fast, fresh take-away. It's not really meant for eat-in and there wasn't a way to wash-up properly before digging into our freshly grilled tentacle-beasts. If we'd been at a local hotel and rating this as a take-out experience it would probably get all 5 stars, since the staff was friendly, professional, and fast, and the food was reasonably priced and quite tasty. Despite my internal trouble about having to eat chips and other obvious finger-foods with a fork to try for slightly greater food safety, this was some excellently grilled Octopus. The sweet-savory marinade had a distinctly Asian flare, and the baby tentacle-beasties were tender rather than rubbery so the master of the grill really knew what she was about. The salad greens were super fresh too, and the proprietors make some fine chips to complement their fresh seafood. All-in-all, we would definitely stop by this shop should we again find ourselves in the region of Bondi Beach. If we do, though, we'll order takeaway rather than crowd in at the tiny bar, practically sitting on top of the order line.

They claim best chips and fish in sydney but I beg to differ. It was just ok. It was missing sauce but you have to buy the sauces. I was on a budget and food in sydney wasn't cheap! I didn't want to spend $3 on a sauce. The batter was heavy and nothing special about the fries.

If I can, I would rate Bondi Surf Seafoods as 3 1/2 stars. We wanted something quick and easy after visiting Bondi Beach, and came across this seafood restaurant. The place isn't very big, with only seating at the counter. I was in the mood for fish and chips, so we got a couple of orders. It was nicely fried, and tasted good with some vinegar added. The employees who took care of us were friendly as well. It is a nice place to stop for some food if you are spending the day at the beach.

It's true. Deep fried Mars bars. Also - banana and pineapple fritters. Yep. But beyond those admittedly incredible heart attack in-a-snack indulgences, Bondi Surf Seafood is an excellent, excellent chippy and fishmonger. It's not fancy, but for a lover of all things seafood, I adore that I can walk in, pick my fish, and have it grilled right there in front of me. Even more so, I love that 10 minutes after walking in, I can be sitting on the beach with a piece of perfectly grilled tuna, Tassie salmon or barramundi and a fresh greek salad, or a pile of freshly prepped sashimi. Add some calamari in there too, what the hell. This is also my stop of choice when picking up fish to prepare at home. The prices are completely reasonable and the quality is fantastic. Can't go wrong with fish that comes in daily from Sydney Fish Markets!

First bite of fish and chips in Australia!! Based on the fresh fish and seafood at the window and number of customers that were lined up, I had to try this place. It was also awarded Sydney's Best Seafood, Fish & Chips in 2011. There are many specials to choose from, but I decided to go with their fried daily fish-of-the-day and thick cut fries. Not bad, but pricey at $11.50. The better deal is their 2 fish & 1 chip deal at $21 because they give you plenty of fries in a single order. It was a substantial amount, but lacked flavor. Although there is salt added on top, I should have requested some lemons to give it a kick. Any additional sauce costs extra. The fish (I believe it was barramundi) was extremely fresh, but the fries were a bit thick for me. More like wedges. I also had the chance to try their oysters that my friend ordered. Very fresh, but again not flavorful. If I returned, it would be to pick up some of their fresh seafood offered or possibly try their infamous DEEP FRIED MARS BAR! Was unaware at the time they offered such a treat. haha Whether yummy or not, this restaurant is situated right in front of Bondi Beach, so being able to do take-out and eat sitting on the sand or at the many picnic tables is another pro.

    Amazingly huge calamari!

Well damn! I dare to say this is the best calamari I've ever had. Just check out my picture to see how huge the calamari was. Not only that, but the chips underneath were some of the best chips ever! If this wasn't over $10, it would have gotten 6 stars. Australia's expensive, but this was a pretty good meal for the price!

What a great spot for fresh fish, anyway you like it! It's located on the street facing Bondi Beach and we popped in for some fish and chips. We couldn't decide between what kind of fish to have, as they had different specials posted on the board. The guy behind the counter was nice enough and offered to combine two specials so we could try both types of fish. There's also a counter for fresh fish you can buy raw or have them grill or fry! They also put this seasoning (I think they called it chicken salt) on top of the chips. The lunch special with 2 fish and chips was enough for the three of us with plenty of chips leftover. In total, $22 for two kinds of fresh local fish, on the beach, and enough for three of us. The store has a small counter if you choose to eat in, but we had to eat fish and chips on the beach. If you do the same, beware of seagulls!

    Grilled Salmon Filet with chips.

Ordered the salmon with chips while my mother and brother ordered the fish and chips for two special. The inside was a fish market, giving a solid indication that the fish served was going to be fresh. The grilled salmon filet was pretty solid. Cooked to be a little drier than I expected, but salmon is salmon and it was delicious. The original fried fish was so juicy and the batter was so crunchy. Served with lemon and salt, it proved to be one of the best fish n chips I've had in a long time. This was definitely tastier than my salmon filet. Probably cause it was deep fried, though. The chips (fries) were so thick and crispy. Deep fried to perfection, served blazing hot. Had to wait for them to cool down to even start scarfing them down. Also ordered the deep fried Mars bar and oh boy was it delicious. I have a serious sweet tooth so it was amazing, but my brother had a harder time putting it down because of the overwhelming sweetness. I would come here again just for this. Solid fish n chips but the deep fried Mars bar keeps you coming for more.

$29 daily special. Fish and chips for 2.

Great seafood, great service. Only knock was the $2.50 or $3 dollar ketchup! No free sauce of any sort made the whole thing seem kinda stingy. Food and service top notch though.

Since I already ate lunch there was only one option left for me.... To try my very first deep fried Mars Bar. At nearly $5 I was hoping for a delicious miracle and that's exactly what I got. A hot, melting, out of this world miracle that was moreish and yet for my healths sake buying another was strictly prohibited. If you're a Simpsons fan like me it certainly passed the grease paper test! I nearly burnt my mouth; had icing sugar spots all over my jeans and my hands were a sticky mess but I didn't care one bit. If you can fault this awesome treat you're not a true Mars Bar or chocolate fan.

    Julie L.

Bondi Surf Seafood is a traditional style fish'n'chippie in the greatest sense of the word. Serving up those paper wrapped packets that you rip open like a kid with a Christmas present because you're too impatient to unwrap it in a civilised manner. And then you've drowned them in so much vinegar that a massive spurt of steam escapes and burns your fingers when you tear into the packet... don't tell me you don't know what I'm talking about. And don't tell me your mouth isn't watering at the thought right now! They source their seafood daily from the fish market, have been voted "Sydney's Best Seafood" and serve up home made tartare and other sauces. Best of all for Brits or the British-dietarily-inclined, they sell fresh rolls so you can make chip butties, and deep-fried Mars Bars (yeah that's right!)

    Caroline S.

This is a bit of an iconic fish 'n' chips store in Bondi, but not for its fish 'n' chips. Although they are awesome. This is a seafood place you need to bring all your friends for it makes a treat so rich, so sweet, so decadent that you'll feel ill and euphoric at the same time. The deep-fried Mars Bar. The name says it all really. Take a Mars Bar and deep fry it until it becomes a treat like no other. Probably worth 2 days in calories, it's something you need to have at least once. Share it with a friend unless you're up for a challenge. Besides that, the food is delicious and fresh and comes in nice big portions at a good price. Perhaps grab your usual fish 'n' chip combo and then live on the edge with the Mars Bar.

We shared the sashimi appetizer, which was very fresh and tasty. The pieces were not particularly large, so don't expect it to fill you up. My niece had fish and chips, and really enjoyed it. For my main, I had the barramundi and chose the miso butter with it. The barramundi is described on the menu as "200g," which comes to more than 7 ounces. Cooked, it felt like a small portion, particularly because the plate didn't come with much else. Judged by the food and ambiance, I'd give this four stars. What soured the meal for us was our experience at the end with the waiter. My niece had spent the semester abroad in Australia and I was visiting her. She had explained to me that tipping was not a usual thing in Australia. I also learned that from my hotel desk clerk when I asked how I would change some currency for tips (e.g., for the chambermaid etc.). The desk clerk told me outright that people didn't tip in Australia. So when the check came at North Bondi, I was surprised to see options on the credit card machine for 10%, 15%, and 20% gratuity, although there was also an option for no tip. Puzzled, I turned to my niece, who picked "no tip." After that, the waiter questioned us, asking if we had had a problem with the meal or the service (which is entirely what I would have expected from a NY waiter who had been stiffed on a tip, but not what I expected in Australia). Then he practically threw the receipt on the table. Maybe North Bondi Fish gets a lot of American tourists who tip as if they were back home. (And I definitely would have tipped in the U.S. -- service was totally fine.) Under the circumstances, the waiter's attitude at the end was an unpleasant surprise. (And as a result, I ended up tipping 5% at every restaurant in Australia thereafter.)
