Now that John has closed that location and is now re-opened in Devon, I'm going to Devon for my hair cuts. Awful and terrible experience.... My son is mildly autistic.... He does not like clippers on his neck.... The owner himself John started using clippers when I asked him about the kind of haircut that my son should have... I asked him to stop using the clippers and to please use scissors and he told me that he could not stop using them once he started to haircut... My son was visibly upset shrugging his shoulders and not letting him continue the haircut.. Then the owner himself started screaming at my son saying "GROW UP" .. Then my son said please use the scissors... He screamed at my son "NO SCISSORS ". This man has absolutely no professionalism or any type of bedside manner whatsoever.... I will never return there again... I left there with my son having half of a haircut and went to the hair Cuttery were a wonderful girl named Brenda finished my sons haircut and told me that you could get the same haircut with scissors or you could get just as close to the head with a pair of scissors...... This is an update ...... He has never ever used clippers on my son .. Ever .. And when asked to stop using the clippers he insisted that he had to because the haircut would not turn out proper... My heart sunk when I saw the shop was closed and was being renovated for another use. I went next-door to the shoe repair place store and was elated to find that John has relocated to the Devon area. I have been going to John's barber shop for the past 15 years and I've always had a superlative experience and a great haircut ! Every time! I came here for the first time today, and was immediately welcomed by the owner John with a smile and handshake. I absolutely loved that! I was glad to see a full row of barbers and a shop full of clients - a great sign of a good business. All of the barbers were absolutely kind, respectful, remembered their clients names, and were in joyful spirits. I really appreciated the great customer service here. Upon leaving John was sure to stop what he was doing to say goodbye, thank you, and shake my hand again - amazing. Unfortunately, I had a bad haircut experience. Upon seeing my hair (asked for a 0 to 1 fade on the sides, half-trim on the top).. there was a lot of unevenness that my barber was unable to see eye-to-eye with me on. He very respectfully tried to fix it by getting more tight, but ended up just cutting my hair shorter than I anticipated. I became frustrated with the lack of resolve, so became content with where it was at. Fortunately, a friend was able to even it out for me later. My haircut experience today truly was not worth the $22. I came back into my car with hair all over my face, neck, and clothes - it was like I was not cleaned up at all (despite the barber attempting to clean me up!) Again, the customer service here is phenomenal - probably the best barbershop atmosphere I've ever encountered. Sadly, I cannot say the same about my haircut. The best experience I can remember in getting a haircut. No frills; no feminine or metrosexual salon fluff... just a good ol' fashioned (and iconic) barbershop offering remarkable, friendly, comfortable, thorough, and professional service fit for a man. As you sit there and watch the ballgame in conversation, you immediately have no doubt you're in the hands of a master barber. In the end, after that warm shaving cream is expertly removed from the back of your neck with a straight razor to leave a silky smooth nape, you are presented in the mirror with a masterpiece. Today I tried this barber shop and am very glad I did. What a find! I prize skill and found it here. This is how the better barber shops were run since I began going to them in the '50s: an in-depth knowledge of craft and customer. John and his barbers were friendly and clearly well skilled. My barber Antonio gave me a perfect haircut, following my style requests with ease and precision, and interacting with me just as is needed to provide me with a great cut. Shocked by the poor service and rude treatment we received by the owner. They gave my son a far shorter cut than requested and then blamed it on him for fidgeting and having "dry" hair and me too. I was told by the owner that I needed to pay for the cut because it took so much effort to cut my sons difficult hair. He is a bully and I was intimidated into paying for a terrible haircut for fear he would cause a scene. Will not return. I also want to add that the owner appears to treat women differently than men. The other mothers and I in the shop were given curt responses while he chatted up the men. Update: Based on the owner's comments below, I am confident that no women nor children will want to enter this barbaric business. Children don't always sit still. Women who are accompanying their sons deserve the same respect and congeniality as the men in the chairs. read more

My usual stylist was booked for the day and I really needed a cut so I decided to give Troncelliti's a try. It's been a Main Line staple for many years but I've never been and I'd much rather support a local business than a national chain hair-hackery. When I walked, every styling chair was occupied and none of the employees made eye contact or greeted me. I sat down and was pleased that I only waited about 10 mins before my turn came around. The barber (whose name I will not mention) asked me what I wanted to do with my hair. I began explaining but he promptly cut me off and said, "that's not helping me, do you want scissors or clippers and what number" (paraphrasing). After answering his directed questions he began cutting. Through out the whole time in his chair, he didn't make an effort to say a single word to me. I'm not the kind of person that even likes a chatty catty stylist but I do appreciate being acknowledged. He seemed to be focused on the task at hand which I appreciate and ultimately gave me a reasonable haircut. There was definitely a lack of fineness though. At one point when he was brushing my hair I literally though his was slapping the top of my head with his hands. Glad I didn't have a headache today. When I got home I noticed some slight adjustments I had to make with the clippers but I'm sure he would have corrected it if I'd pointed it out at the time. All in all I got a satisfactory haircut but the customer service was lacking. May be this is all part of the barbershop experience but I don't plan on returning here. UPDATE 11/13/13: Promptly after posting this review, I was contact by John, the owner. He apologized for the less than satisfactory experience and offered me a refund or a free cut if I come back. I'm fairly new to this area and thought I'd try this place based on the reviews. I can't say I'm thrilled with the way my hair looked upon exiting. Tony cut my hair, and I told him I spike it up in the front. The result was a little hair on the left and right, and like none in the middle. I have essentially nothing to spike up. I'm 25 and now I look 30. He was also coughing/wheezing a lot during my haircut. Reassuring, considering it's flu season. I won't be returning. read more

For the last couple of years, I've been faithfully going to John for my haircuts, and at this point, there isn't much of anybody else that I would dare trust for a haircut. John is personable, efficient and an expert at making you look your best... and he remembers very clearly after an appointment or two exactly what you're looking for. The price is unbelievably reasonable, and that's why I tip him around 30% - he's more than worth it. While there are other barbers who work for him, I have yet to find anyone around Philadelphia, including his colleagues, who could do better than he does... and I'd tried lots of barbers and stylists in the area before I found him. Lastly, except for Saturdays - their busiest day - they do take appointments... and I'd highly recommend that. read more

Please do not go here! This place is beyond terrible. My haircut was absolutely terrible it is uneven and the sides don't match. I tried to tell the barber but he was super rude and didn't care about what I want. At the end he just told me I'm done, he wouldn't even listen to me when I tried to have him fix it. Even worse my wife was with me and she tried to help by telling him how to fix it. The barber said to me never bring that women here again leave her at home. I was so upset that was one of the rudest experiences I have ever had. On top of that the shop is very dirty. Do not give this business patronage! read more

I am shocked reading the nonsense some people have written with respect to this fine establishment and its proprietor, John. I have gone to John for many years and have been appalled at times for the treatment some of the barbers have to endure. I believe the shop offers excellent service for a fair price! My wife has taken our 2 sons here as well and always enjoyed chatting with John. Today on a day when the wind chill factor was below 0, a woman came to the door with a boy who was around 6 yrs old. She held the door open and tried to coax her son in- the child began fighting her and was backing away from the entrance. The woman still had the door open causing the barber shop to get cold quickly. John finally intervened and said firmly to please close the door immediately. The woman left and never entered. Will John suffer the scorn of another customer because he was firm? I would say please control your children better-- there are life lessons to be learned here including having a mutual respect for other people. To get a hair cut .He wanted John the owner to cut his hair as he was cutting with the clippers he asked could he use scissors.John was yelling at him to GROW. UP and NO SCISSORS. Every time I go to get a haircut I am unhappy. They really only have a few kinds of haircuts they can do and it's basically the ones you see on the barbers in there. Unless you have straight hair and want a classic conservative haircut then you will be disappointed. I was let down this time when I went in for a light trim as I am trying to grow my hair longer and the barber cut off half of my hair. He showed me how much he was going to cut and then cut off waaay more then we had discussed. Won't be going back again. This barber shop is a class act. I've tried numerous barbershops in the Philly area, yet I figured I'd give this one a shot since it's closer to home than my usual place in Center City. I called before arriving to find out how many barbers were working and how long the wait was. A man answered the phone quickly and answered politely. Four barbers were working busily when I arrived, yet the one closest to the door (the owner?) stopped briefly to make eye contact, greeted me, and invited me to have a seat. Several people were ahead of me in line, and a few guys came in while I was waiting. Everyone waited patiently and stepped up quickly to the first available barber. While I was waiting, I noticed that two of the barbers politely asked their customers for more input on their haircuts. One of the customers requested a closer fade and more off the top. The barber inquired politely for more clarification and then efficiently resumed cutting, without any grumbling, sighing or arguing. My barber was friendly and efficient and did a great job with the haircut, which was exactly to my specifications. I did not feel rushed or hurried at all. I'll be back in a couple of months for my next haircut. I wish I had tried this place out sooner! read more

The barbers there were extremely friendly. I have been to barber shops with better environments, however. Since I am a college student, I want to spend the least amount of money as possible. In my opinion it was $5 too much, but I can deal with that price. I was going to Gentleman's Hair Stylist on Old Lancaster because it was close and cheap. However, I will continue to spend the $5 more here, as the barbers' personality and hospitality were outstanding. read more
