My student daughter had a flat tire and we weren't sure if only one, or all, needed to be replaced. I was out of town trying to coordinate this from a distance with her. Mike was so helpful and kind--keeping us both in the loop. Let us both know cost (very reasonable) and time frame. He wa also able to diagnose additional abnormality with a noise that my car was making unrelated to the exhaust and provided an estimate. Not only did they save me $1200 on a catalytic converter, I was waited on without an appointment, and they checked my problem for free, which is something Midas did not do before giving me a quote that doubled the quote that I received from Mike, who has a gift when connecting with every single person that I sat for 2 hours and watched how he treated every single person that came through their door with the kindness of a friend or family member. I contacted "John the muffler man shop" on Wednesday and told them that as a business owner of a specialty mechanic shop I was looking to outsource some Land Rover exhaust work on as many as 12 Land Rovers. I wanted to start by bringing one Range Rover over to see the quality of work they could provide without trying to up sell me on anything. The guy at front desk was very helpful and knowledgeable, he assured me that although they do not stock mufflers in house they can get any muffler same day. I requested a Flowmaster super 40 series to be installed. They quoted at $200-300. They asked me to drop off Thursday and it would be done same day. I got a call on Thursday afternoon with the typical up sale of a Magna flow bolt on kit for $750. I explained that first off if I was going to do a bolt on kit I would do myself and I wasn't interested in spending that much money. I don't get a call back until Friday at 5pm to let me know the car is ready and can be picked up on Monday. I arrive Monday and inspect the vehicle only to find that they didn't do a complete job. They welded a cheap muffler directly to the Y-pipe (Should have installed an olive type joint for removal of exhaust)and placed hangers on it, they then placed a 45* angle down pipe facing directly into the right rear shock base. Not only is this dangerous as it will cause the shock to blow out and possibly cause a major accident, it is completely unprofessional. The explanation was that it was "too difficult" to bend a 3" pipe over the rear axle as is standard procedure and I am almost 100% sure required by law to pass any type of inspection. The technician that installed the down pipe into the shock argued with me and tried to state it doesn't face the shock, I asked if he would like to step outside and explain that in detail and show me that I am wrong. He declined and walked away, they manager wasn't helpful either. Both manager and guy at front desk acknowledged it was into the shock base. The manager commented was "I would have went with a bolt on kit from magna-flow." The moral of this story isn't the poor quality of labor or the horrible customer service. The welds were decent and the partial work was decent quality. The issue here is the pure laziness and cutting corners to save time and money on a job. A shop that sells its self as a "Muffler / Exhaust" specialty shop knows better and should have never allowed something like this to occur. If they are cutting corners like this on a service they specialize in, I can only imagine what they are doing to cars that aren't in their realm of specialties. At the end of the day they discounted my overpriced ticket by $50 and I left with a job that I will have to redo in my own shop. I didn't have enough faith in the shop to allow them to attempt to "fix" the already botched job they initially preformed. read more

I am not giving one star because I think that they are capable and honest, but I do not know what happened with my car. I was out by Feb 3 for only an axle. The axle took two weeks to complete for only an axle. This repair shop could not find the axle at all, I was looking at the dealer for the part and their overkill on cost markup. I was able to order the axle and ship it to the shop. During pickup I was charged for needing to find the axle. I was told it was a "customer part," because they couldn't find it. It was ordered online from a popular parts site. During the estimate I was told fluids were included, but I got charged for them during pickup. They opened my trunk while on the lift and when it hit the ceiling it fractured the trunklid spoiler in two places and unfastened spoiler to the trunk. I was told it was only fractured until I used the trunk and the spoiler bounced loosely. They secured the spoiler, but I've had to pop it in again. I needed to come back after only 275 miles another shop was recharging my A/C and found a hole in my new axle. I had them look at it because this shop couldn't find the axle seal and they did fortunately confirm that during re-install that the seal was not leaking. There was a dent in the new axle metal band. The axle was removed 4 times and I knew it happened on install. He was honest in saying it is likely, but can't confirm, that it happened during install because the axle bounces once removed. Too much to go wrong on my first experience here. They were able to install a second new axle, it's great they fixed something that was done by their own action. read more

Just because people rave about your reviews, please keep in mind you set precedence for your "great service" that everyone is giving you credit. When someone walks in after they get off the phone with you, and there are no customers. Make sure you're really taking care of them and not just taking them for granted based on gender. Having someone wait for 30 mins to check out a small tire leak with no customers in the place is totally unacceptable(ONE TIRE). Left this place without anything done! Also be mindful of the conversations that you speak in front of customers, I get no one is around, you can let your hair down for a moment, but again, 1 customer or 50, you must keep your conversations professional. Sorry guys, you will definitely get a 1 star for wasting our time and loosing time and money. Very disappointed and displeased! read more

This past weekend my G35 started to sounds like it was going to blow up every time I hit the gas. Suspecting my exhaust system was to blame, I found John the Muffler Man on Yelp with 5 reviews and all 5 had 5 stars. After waking up all sleeping residents between Brewers Hill and Marquette's campus I pulled up to John the Muffler Man at 8:10. I was told there were a few customers before me, but they would take a look at my car in 5-10 minutes. Within that time frame I was asked what my issue was and they took my key to inspect for themselves. By 8:30 I was quoted $45 to reconnect the exhaust flange. YES, YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY $45!!!! Now understand all they had to do was torch off 2 rusted on bolts and replace them, but I didn't think it was possible to do anything on a car for under $100 straight cash. Anyway I was out of there at 8:50 with a brand new sounding car. Later in the day (Still pumped about the $45 bill) I emailed a mechanic friend of mine about my experience. Service: A+ Price: A+ Here was my situation. My 2000 Toyota Tundra was in desperate need of a new exhaust system and the check engine light went on. The Toyota dealership (on 27th street) who I usually go to quoted me a price of $2000 to replace it. I was like uggggh that sucks. My friends and co-workers recommended John the Muffler Man. So I thought I would check it out. They quoted me 1/2 the price of the dealership and didn't try to sell me anything else that I didn't need and only recommended additional work that I would need down the line with a range of prices of what I could do. A day later, the Tundra runs like a charm and sounds great and I saved $1000 over the dealership. Also a little secret on their web-site they have 10% off coupon (along with other coupons) and if you check in on Yelp you get buy one get one free on wiper blades. They do pretty much everything at the shop - tires, breaks, struts, oil change, exhaust systems, mufflers, etc. So forget about paying outrageous prices at your dealership and head over to John the Muffler Man for any car work you need done. I have zero complaints about a mechanic. Zero. Nil. None. The staff is super helpful and honest. It's not that they don't screw you over. It's that you get the distinct impression that they are doing their best to make sure you don't get screwed over. I had a part that needed to be replaced and it alone would have cost me $1300. Instead of just charging me they told me that the part I had was still under warranty and the dealership would replace it for free. This is exactly why I will keep on coming back. Great service. I first took my car into a GM dealer to get my noisy muffler checked out, they charged me $60 (for inspection) and said that it would cost over $800 to fix. Luckily my wife found John the Muffler Man, got an estimate for free, took it in on Monday afternoon and had it out in a little less than 2 hours. Best of all, it saved me almost $200. No brakes! OMG! Squeeel!!! Whew...almost rear ended someone. Time to visit my trusty independent mechanic where they service everything from mufflers to shocks, brakes to CV axles and everything else under the sun. Turns out I needed new brake calipers, rotors, and pads and was given a quote. Before releasing my car to further terrorize fellow drivers, they topped off my brake fluid (was leaking all over my tire) and swapped my balding front tires with the rears without charging me a dime! Ended up having my brakes serviced here and received the same excellent service I had received several months earlier when I came in for a new front exhaust pipe. Prices for both repairs were cheaper than every other repair shop in town and out of town. Well worth the 20 mile drive for me! Dealership quality without stealership prices and mechanics who not only are knowledgeable but do their best to save you money by telling you what is critical and what can wait for a future date. Only negative is the god-awful wait time. This shop is constantly brimming with activity. All the lifts are almost always occupied with vehicles waiting for an injection of life. So naturally, you may have to wait an hour, two, maybe more before your car is inspected, problems diagnosed, and repairs quoted. Don't forget to tip if you're happy with the service and prices! Although...my mechanic was hesitant at first but after some insistence, he accepted with a courteous smile and thanks. :) read more

Just to share how honest: my father went in with what he thought was a serious issue and expressed that to the mechanic (obviously) only to be told after inspection that there was nothing wrong and that he just needed brake pads in a few thousand more miles. Truly, an old man comes in saying something is wrong and is willing to pay whatever to fix it and you tell him his car is fine and don't even go for the brakes? I have been taking my vehicles to John The Muffler Man for many years. I have a 2005 Mercury a 2003 GMC and a 2005 Honda and each vehicle has been in there at one time or another. I'm always assured they will diagnose and give me the best price on repairs in town. With older and high mile vehicle it feels like when one has an issue the rest are sure to follow. I like the fact that you can drop it off with out making an appointment and usually get it back the same day. I think what I like the most is the fact that this is a super honest shop (I know car repair shops and honest don't usually go together) they will diagnose the problem and let you know what needs Immediate attention and what can be put off and for how long. Excellent service and repair in the past. On Saturday I was told to call Monday. Monday morning was told they would call right back with repair estimate. By afternoon I called them and they still didn't have it. I was told I could bring the car in but they wouldn't get to it for a couple of days. Seems new generation of owners don't respect the business their parents and grandparents build. To avoid sitting a week with no car, I had it fixed elsewhere in a couple of hours by people who cared. So, I had an exhaust-related problem and ended up arriving about 5 minutes before they closed on what seems like a super-busy Saturday afternoon. They assured me they could at least take a look at my car...so we waited. About half an hour after they closed they were able to look at my car. I was invited into the garage to look at the problem and presented with a couple options for fixing it. The options were explained to me in terms of cost, performance, and resale value and ultimately, I was able to walk out about 20 minutes later (a full hour after they closed) with a repair that saved me about $600 from what I was quoted at a chain shop. The pricier repair that I was quoted (but did not choose to do) would have saved me about $300, so even had I gone that route I still would have been saving money. The staff were friendly and respectful to me and to all of the other customers during the time I was there.
