For the past 5 years, I have been doing my FAA medical certification with Dr Phillipp given his great knowledge of how the FAA works and how he makes it much easier on the airman to obtain the medical certificate without going through too many hoops! I do not even have a yelp account, but I have just signed up to specifically thank Dr. Phillipp and express to everyone out there that is skeptical about seeing a new AME, just how great Dr. Phillip really is at what he does. First, let me explain my special situation, and how Dr. Phillip helped me get to flight school. I was scheduled for a helicopter course last month, but unfortunately I failed my eye exam with my first AME due to an amblyopia eye disorder residing in my left eye. The AME did not explain to me other options and routes (such as a SODA). He simply issued me a third class medical and hurried me out of the office. After some research over the internet I decided to not give up, and try my shot at getting a 1st class medical with a SODA. However, I still did not know very much information on obtaining one. That's when I did some research on knowledgeable AME's in the area and found Dr. Phillipp. On a whim, I decided to contact him and discuss the steps of obtaining a SODA. I talked to Dr. Phillipp directly, and he was extremely helpful and knowledgeable on the matter. In fact, he stayed on the phone with me for about 30 minutes explaining to me exactly what I have to do. I then scheduled a visit for my class 1 medical exam the following day. Upon arrival to Dr. Phillips office, I was greeted by his friendly staff and instantly felt welcomed. Dr. Phillip was very professional throughout the exam and shared some of his personal experiences about being a helicopter pilot, which I found inspiring. After the exam, Dr. Phillipp explained to me the steps that I need to take in order to get the paperwork started to issue me my SODA. He even printed out the forms and personally handled my case. He also gave me a list of PHYSDO's that conduct the check rides for SODAS. If that wasn't enough, Dr. Phillip even called OK and had them expedite my certificate so that I can start class immediately. Needless to say, I think I found my AME of choice. I got the contact info for Dr, Phillipp from my flight instructor at the Aero Association of Caltech. Dr. Phillipp had helped many of the club members in the past and I had read many good reviews about him. But it was only after he worked with me to get my medical certificate that I realized he is really the master of his game! I give him 5 stars with no hesitation and here is why: - The issuance of my third class student/medical certificate was delayed for about 8 months due to an amblyopic right eye. I had started the process with another medical examiner. - I called Dr. Phillipp and he was very patient to listen to my medical history and previous correspondence with the medical examiners in Oklahoma. He asked me to send him all my previous tests and correspondences in a single pdf file. - He worked on these documents and called Oklahoma and asked them about the main cause of delays. He received authorization to do a new medical test for me and made an appointment for me just 2 days after my first call! - On the day of my visit, I had a copy of my medical certificate in hand! A week later and I got the medical certificate that was issued by Oklahoma along with an authorization to do the pre-solo medical flight test. This is an authorization to take the test and eventually get the statement of demonstrated ability (SODA). Long story short, Dr. Phillipp is very knowledgable and efficient and has a great personality as well. He saves you a lot of money and precious time to get your medical certificate taken care of. I can not say enough good things about Dr. Phillip . I have spent the last five years dealing with the bureaucratic process with OKC. on a special issuance medical every year. My previous AME was of no help! I started to give up on flying and started to consider selling my aircraft. In a last chance Internet search for some miracle to deal with my issue, I found Dr. Phillip. After a quick phone call to him ( which I might add... he answers the call himself ), we discussed the problem at hand and he looked into the issue with the FAA and said it should be no problem in getting my medical back and in an easier fashion. Dr. Phillip is very personable, humorous and easy going. He is a helicopter pilot, HAM radio operator and German Shepard lover. All of which proves he is a remarkable guy. I just got my FAA medical renewed with the help of Dr. Phillipp this morning. This time it was not a routine renewal as mine has always been for the last 35 years or so since I had a serious medical issue to address with the FAA. I called him at the recommendation of a friend a month or so ago and Dr. Phillipp spelled out for me exactly what medical records and physician's letter I would need to get my medical back. Once I faxed all the required material to Dr. Phillipp, he called up OK City and immediately resolved the issue with FAA and scheduled me for the exam this morning. Dr. Phillipp knows exactly how to deal with the FAA and seems to enjoy a good working relationship with them. His fees are as reasonable as they get and he is caring and friendly and readily available in person and on the phone. I cannot recommend him highly enough. I'm usually skeptical of all positive reviews, but after my exam with Dr. Phillipp I have to say he deserves six stars at least. I wish he was my primary care physician. He's not only friendly and efficient (and on time!), but he truly cares about patient health. He is extremely knowledgable about FAA regulations and takes the time to explain the history and reasoning behind changes in FAA requirement and questions on the medical exam. I don't know exactly where to start but I can say my situation is very similar to most of the other pilots here. I had a heart attack years ago while flying for a major carrier. (No, not while actually in the air.) A few years back I decided to try to get my third class to at least fly locally but was reluctant because of all the stories I'd heard. But since I really wanted to fly, I decided to try since I have never had but that one time problem and healthy otherwise. Well, the stories were true. And sure enough, I got a couple denials. Not to be totally discouraged, I kept trying and finally got a special issuance, but always a hassle. That is, until I heard about Dr. Phillipp. He certainly goes the extra mile, maybe an extra two or three miles. Keep in mind that I have been doing my part these last few years...eating healthy and working out at the fitness center, but Dr. Phillipp has taken the hassle out of the process. I have never seen any doctor work for the pilot group as he does. Now I walk in with the forms and walk out with my medical...no waiting two or three months. Not sure how he does it, but part of his success is knowing exactly what needs to be done and knowing how to discuss a situation with the FAA. I am a captain for a 135 charter company in Orange County. 3 weeks ago, I was diagnosed a condition the FAA considers as disqualifying for medical certification. Tomorrow I am flying again, thanks to Dr. Phillipp. My condition requires a Special Issuance Medical from the FAA. AOPA told me I was looking at about 6 months on the ground: 3 months after end of treatment plus a 3 month backlog of applications with the FAA. I was teaching class at my company last week (don't need a medical to do that) and one of our new hires put me in touch with Dr. Phillipp. I got all of my medical records and a letter from my urologist to him, he spoke with his contacts in OK City, and got the clearance to issue me the medical last Friday. Today (Monday), I got my physcial and walked out of his office with it. What everybody told me would take 6 months, Dr. Phillipp got done in less than a week. All for the price of a normal First Class Medical. He has the FAA system down to a science. And what a great guy to chat with. Fantastic customer service at an amazingly reasonable price.
