Ever since our long-time family dentist retired a few years ago it has been difficult to find a dentist we like, but we found him this week! Per Barbara: There isn't enough to say in praise of Dr. Chan, whose patient I have been for years. On Sunday July 18, 2021 he performed an emergency root canal on an infected back molar of mine. He talked me through what to expect at every move, took time to explain thoroughly before and after the procedure, and performed the whole thing with no pain or discomfort! He even wrote a letter of referral to a hospital E.R. in the event I needed an I.V. antibiotic afterwards (which I did not). Heroic Dentistry and when you need it! Just had the most amazing and rewarding experience with Dr. Chan. I called after hours, as my son had three of his teeth broken by a chain-wielding homeless giant. Dr. Chan called me right back, and agreed to meet at 7:45 in the evening. He had tried to get an assistant, but it was late, so he hornswaggled his wife, a dentist herself, to help. My son's teeth were ragged and had a nerve exposed, with half or more of each tooth missing. They took photos, then he started working on my son's teeth. He did the work peering through a microscope arrangement that really magnified the battlefield, so he could see every detail of the operation. He cleaned and built up each tooth until after three hours of intense work, my son had a movie star smile. Dr. Chan also attended to my son's lip, which needed attention even after the hospital, and after two days looked like new. This was incredible, not only that he treated my son at night, but also had never seen him before. Dr. Chan was backing up Dr. Luedde that night. But Dr. Chan (assisted by his wife) also made him look as good as new. And we were entertained the whole time. What a pleasure it is to find a caring, competent and honest dentist in our own back yard! Thank you Dr. Chan. PS Unreservedly recommend Dr. Chan. Post Script. The reason I had been going to Dr. Luedde is that he is as honest and caring as my previous Dentist, Dr. Gerald Naftalin. However, Dr. Naftalin is in Century City and I got sick of the drive. Dr. Luedde came highly recommended by my friend who checks out any potential service in great detail. Also my brother had gone to Dr. Luedde and was very happy with him. Dr Chan is the man!!!!!! That's all I have to say. He's so amazing that I actually fell asleep in his chair while he was filling my cavities. The only dentist I will ever go to. My husband and I have been patients of Dr. Jay Luedde's office for a very long time. We have had years and years of wonderful care from Dr. Luedde and his staff. Now Dr. Luedde has brought in an associate of the same technical and personal caliber as himself, Dr. John Chan. Dr. Chan provides a unique service for his patients, he utilizes a high-quality and power microscope to enhance his view of his patient's teeth when doing his procedures. I need to premise my comments by mentioning that I am both a professional designer and an amateur artist. I have a discerning eye for color and appearance and confess to being a perfectionist. Recently I presented Dr. Chan with a particularly challenging tooth veneer request. When I was a child, I popped-out one of my front teeth when I fell ice skating. The tooth was placed back in my mouth and was saved successfully with a root canal. Over the decades, it has had additional procedures to save the tooth and bleaching to keep it looking as nice as possible. For the past 10 years, the bleaching was not as successful and the upper portion of the tooth became quite brown and unsightly. I did not want to put veneers on two teeth since only one was dead and I like the look of my other healthy front tooth. So, I lived with the problem. However, Dr. Chan has a new solution. He works with an exceptional and artistic master ceramist, Tomoo, from Takumi Dental Lab. Tomoo builds thin and precise veneers that match a patient's surrounding teeth colors, size and even textures. There is minimal grinding down of the host tooth when compared to previous techniques. It became a team effort between Dr. Chan, his assistant, Kristie, Tomoo, my hygienist, Mary and myself to match my other teeth beautifully. I have many shades on my teeth as well as transparency that presented difficult matching requirements when compared to most people's teeth. Plus, I only wanted the one tooth done, not a pair for easier matching. It took two tries, which Dr. Chan and Tomoo happily did, as well as final touch tinting that Dr. Chan is able to do inside the veneer before bonding it on. I couldn't be happier! The experience was fun and interesting and I am very pleased that Dr. Luedde has found such great additions to his office in Dr. Chan, Kristie and Tomoo. One last comment. I mentioned to two of my married neighbors/friends that I had decided to try the veneer on my front tooth. They encouraged me enthusiastically to do it. The first time I saw them after Dr. Chan was finished, they complimented on the noticeable improvement to my smile and appearance without my asking what they thought - they beat me to it! The next time I bumped into them and we were chatting, the husband, out-of-the- blue, commented that my tooth and smile really looked great with my new veneer. He's not the type of person I would expect to bring it up again. His doing so made me very happy. That's how much Dr. Chan's team has improved my appearance. I feel my smile is one of my attributes. I got an oppurtunity to work under his guidance at the emergency clinic.The case assigned to me was complicated for an undergrad,but Dr.Chan went through each and every step and explained the rationale for it too. As I promised in my previous review of Dr. John Chan, I am now sharing the rest of my dental experience with you. In the last few years, several established dentists told me what I wanted to accomplish from the dental procedure was "impossible", while I was simply wishing to restore the original look of my teeth, and my natural smile. I didn't want my teeth to look like something you see in a magazine, straight, even, sparkling white -- but unnatural. I brought my old pictures to Dr. Chan and told him my "impossible" wishes. Much to my surprise, he not only said to me: "it is possible", he also said: "everything is possible", with a positive tone. That was not an empty promise. Dr. Chan has made my wishes come true, with flying colors. Every tooth of mine now has its own personality, variations of contour, color to match my skin tone and the tooth next to it, then cohesively blends in with the rest. They all fit so well with no visible spaces in between. Let me tell you, it took tremendous effort and patience from him, and from his team, it was not an easy task, indeed! Hey, I knew I came with lots of expectations, and I would not settle for the second best. It took a few months to get all the work done, as my gum needed time to heal in between the bite fittings, crown moldings, and the matching of shade and shape. No details were ever missed by his keen eyes. The work was finally completed before the holidays. I said to myself, it would be a great time to put Dr. Chan's work to a test from the reaction of my friends and families in the holiday gatherings. I worried that I could have been bias because I was impressed by Dr. Chan's positive attitude and personality, it was the perfect timing to let the third parties be the judge. As a result, I am happy to share with you that, almost everyone in the parties said to me: " you look so young and happy there, your smile just looks different, what is it? " You see, this was exactly what I had always wanted to achieve all those years. I did not want to draw attention to my dental work, instead, I wanted to draw attention to how the dental work had restored and affected my smile, the natural smile that I was always proud of, but lost it from the dental work done over the years by those "Dr. Impossible", who did not take my wishes and concerns to their hearts. Before I had the dental procedures performed by Dr. Chan, all my crowns and implants looked fine from the surface, straight, flat and even; however, they were so rigid with no personality, just like a denture without a life of its own. To make it worse, the bad fittings and lack of contour of the crowns done by my previous dentists had been causing problems to my gum and bite, therefore, slow deterioration underneath my teeth. During the time Dr. Chan was performing the procedures for me, I learned from him that, the length and the contour of each tooth contributed to the way we smile, forming the shape of our lips, and creating the youthfulness in our facial expression, at the same time, taking our dental health into consideration, as a whole. I also discovered that, Dr. Chan was ambidextrous, making him extremely versatile using both hands equally well, no wonder he was able to get into the delicate area behind a tooth any which way he wished to. It was ironic that, my dental expenses with Dr. Chan only amounted to 76% of what I had paid to many of my previous "Dr. Impossible"! All dentists receive their technical training from schools, but a caring heart is not something that could be trained, it comes from within. That's what makes Dr. Chan and his team different from many others in the dental practice. Dr. Chan is a good man and a competent dentist. He repaired three sheared teeth in expert timing, saving one nerve-exposed tooth from having a root canal. I must say his precision with instruments is impressive (did not nick my gums once). In addition to his skill and years of experience, he is benevolent with a good sense of humor, which makes the time pass by smoothly. He is also very polite when asking to 'open a little wider' or 'go ahead and bite down please' which may seem trivial but while having work done is greatly appreciated.
