Let me preface this by saying that despite that we've had an acupuncturist in my family for nearly 20 years, I'd never tried it and had NO interest in doing so. Then my back, damaged in a car accident and past the period where the driver's insurance co. would take care of it, went out. I was paralyzed on the right side of my torso, and could NOT afford three weeks on my back. In desperation, since nothing had helped on previous episodes, I turned to Yelp for an acupuncturist in Alameda. John Nieters' office was the highest recommended. I had one session with Tracy, after which I could move like a human. After a session with Lynn the next day, I could do jumping jacks. (I didn't, but I COULD have.) A month later, it went out again, worse. One session and I was moving like something other than a robot. Now I go monthly and am problem-free. It's not cheap (which they warned me when I called), but if there's a better example of "you get what you pay for," I've never seen it! From what I'd seen of Oriental medicine before, I was very skeptical - I expected things like foot baths to treat bronchitis, and my Western Medicine-sympathetic brain couldn't wrap itself around it. I went only because I was literally desperate. But rather than something that required *any* suspension of disbelief, what I got was not too dissimilar from what I've had at physical therapists' offices, only this was actually effective. Instead of applying patches to my skin through which electro-stim current flows, they used a similar technique through needles - getting the current RIGHT INTO the knot, achieving in minutes what neither P/T or massage had been able to do in months. Now I also see them for tendinitis in my heel, damaged in a work accident. I took P/t for five months with almost no effect and rather than letting worker's comp put me on super-steroids with nasty side-effects, I talked them into letting me go to Tracy. After four sessions, the tenderness is MUCH decreased and I've even had painfree days for the first time in a year, No one's believes more than a convert. Call me highly religious. read more

John is a great healer and a very caring person. His office staff is top notch and always friendly. I suffer from chemical sensitives, which most doctors would write off as depression or just nonsense. After a few months I feel that I am on the path to recovery and can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I feel better than I did a year ago and am looking forward to more improvement. I would recommend John to anyone for traditional illnesses and for an alternative to traditional medicine. read more

People look at me funny when I say "my acupuncturist got me pregnant" until I qualify it. My acupuncturist got my body healthy enough for me to get pregnant and carry to full term. I had numerous problems and Dr. Nieters was able to help immensely. I had been to western doctors before a friend recommended Dr. Nieters to me for my infertility. Western doctors just pumped me full of synthetic hormones in the hopes that it would help getting me pregnant, but this actually did more harm than good. Dr. Nieters was able to explain thoroughly what was happening in my body and treat me to better my health. He is very knowledgeable across so many areas. I often felt like I would go to my appointments more for information rather than getting the needles - obviously the needles helped though. I had taken allergy tests provided by my regular doctor and they did a very poor job at identifying much of what I was sensitive to. Through blood tests ordered by Dr. Nieters, I was able to adequately determine what foods I was sensitive to - and the list was long. John helped me formulate a diet that eliminated my sensitive foods as well as improve fertility. It is a long process, but I was healing from the inside rather than putting a band-aid on the problem. John is very compassionate, knowledgeable and warm. I highly recommend him! read more

John has been my acupuncturist for many years and has helped to resolve a multitude of chronic heath problems that western medicine had no solution for or only worsened. If if were not for John, I would probably be totally disabled or dead. Whether you have a simple muscle strain or a complicated history of multiple ailments, John's skill as an acupuncturist, herbalist, and nutritional adviser can help you find your way back to wellness. He is truly a gifted healer! If you have any doubts about what I am saying, check out his radio show on KEST 1450 AM, Thursdays, 8-9 am. read more

I started going to John for my back pain about 2 months ago, and with first appointment, it significantly improved and after like 2 or 3rd appt, the pain was completely gone. His approach is very comprehensive and I feel very comfortable with John, who is warm and very kind. I am about 5 months pregnant now, but he knows how to treat pregnant woman, so there is no need to worry about. Every time I go to the appointment, I feel so much better, and I highly recommend him for anyone who has health issues. read more

I am so glad I found John a year ago.. he is absolutely the best acupunture healer, and maybe even the best doctor , east or west.. ever. I originally came to his office with some auto-immune skin problems. His analysis and diagnosis was so thorough that I felt my Alta Bates doc was just not trying hard enough. He took my entire life and psyche into consideration.. or at least it seemed that way.He has helped me with neck pain, headaches and other chronic ailments. I feel like I have found a real healer and a great friend in John Nieters! read more

I had been suffering lately from shoulder pain. John has done Tui-Na, Acupuncture and Electro-acupuncture and the pain had decreased tremendously (80%). The treatments were not painful at all and it was nice to take a break from my day and relaxing in the treatment room listening to soothing music. read more

I rely on John Nieters. He is great with GI issues, mood, hormonal/menopausal/fertility issues, and with stress management. He really knows his stuff, and I am so grateful to have this option to support my health. It is no exaggeration to say that treatment with John not only creates marked improvement on specific symptoms and health issues, but also improves my overall quality of life. It is the best money I spend on myself. read more

I feel like since I've been seeing Dr Nieters I've been given a new life. I began to see him 5 months ago and I was a mess. I also started practicing Qigong and between that and treatment from Dr. Nieters, I have been able to join the living again! I've even been able to get off one of my medications. And have hope that in the next couple months I can eliminate another one. Thank you! Thank you! read more

John Nieters is my go-to person when it comes to my health. I use Western medical doctors because they are covered by insurance and because they can administer tests, but I always turn John for treatment. The amount of medical research John has done and continues to do is mind-blowing. He knows more about current Western medical research than any Western medical doctor I have consulted. He knows more about research into alternative treatments than anyone i know, too. On top of that, he is a gifted healer who gets results. And he is a super nice guy. I enjoy talking to him because of his knowledge and because of his kindness. When I came to John nine years ago, I felt pretty awful and the doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. At first I had Bell's Palsey, then ongoing dizziness and strange neurological problems along with pain in my ribs, etc. The best guess is that it was some sort of virus but not one could tell what it was and I didn't test positive for Lyme's disease. The doctors said there was nothing they could do for me. They wanted to send me to different specialists to look at the symptoms individually and told me that my different symptoms had nothing to do with each other, even though they all started at the same time. When I went to john, I knew i was in the right place. He didn't need a Western diagnosis in order to help me. he could use Chinese medical diagnosis (pulse, tongue, etc) and treat me based on that. He could see what my body was saying and what it needed to get better and he didn't need a name of a disease in order to treat me. What a relief! What's more, he looked at me as a whole person and made sense of the various conditions that came on at the same time instead of telling me that they were unrelated and sending me to different specialists to look at my different symptoms. My condition was "knotty" and complicated and it took a while to work through it. He told me this right away. Some people can just have a few visits with John and be healed (John aims for this and is known for this) but he told me up front that my condition would take a little while to treat. That was okay with me because I started to feel better right away and continued to see improvements. I still don't know exactly what was wrong with me then, but I know that I am way better now. i see John once a year for a visit and if something comes up, I run to him. If he was covered by insurance he would be my primary care provider. He is, anyway. Thanks, John! You're a life saver. read more

John is fantastic! Very attentive. During my first visit his medical history was more thorough than any I got from a regular doctor. The office staff is amazing! My results for allergies have been excellent. I highly recommend John and his staff. read more

John Nieters has been a huge help to our family. My husband was having a lot of health issues (terrible migraines, stabbing stomach pains, anxiety, the list goes on) and after $10,000 in medical bills no western doctor was able to help him. So we went to see John. My husband was diagnosed with a rare auto immune disorder and since he has been in Johns care he has been doing great. I'm not joking when I say that John saved my husbands life. John helped me to get pregnant, earlier than we all expected, and I had a very comfortable pregnancy because of his help. John's staff is great! We are always happily greeted by Monique, both my husband and I have also seen Lynn and Jenny a few times and they are fantastic too. We highly recommend everyone there. read more

I came to Dr. Nieters with high hopes based on the rave reviews. However, what I experienced kept disappointing me. The first new patient appointment was about an hour, which seemed to be okay. He is very knowledgeable on what he is doing, which made me feel very hopeful that I finally was in good hands. The following appointments started to feel more and more rushed with the consultation time ranging from 5 - 15 minutes depending on whether it's acupuncture or consultation only. If I do acupuncture, once the needles were put in, I would not see him again afterwards. It was always his assistant coming in to take the needles away and gave me whatever the herbs that he prescribed. So often I had to ask the assistant to ask him more questions by interrupting other patient's appointment time with him. Once I even had to ask during the checkout time which herbs I should take for the condition I mentioned during the appointment. He totally forgot or his assistant didn't see exactly what herbs he meant to give me for the following weeks. These complains seem to echo at least one of the other reviewers had to say. I thought of quitting even after the second appointment, but decided to stick with him a little longer and see what more he can offer. Eventually I had to persuade myself to seek other help since I can get better treatment elsewhere for the money I paid. I just don't see that he cares about his patients that much. For the acupuncture treatments, I was very surprised by the way he puts the needles in. Other acupuncturists would gently tap the needles in, but he would grab the lower part of the needle and push in. I shouldn't have felt pain, but I did every time when a needle goes into my skin. The receptionist always seems so cold and unwelcoming. Any more question you ask her, she'll give that annoyed look. So I thought I'd better be quiet. Anyways, I hope this review would help other people to get a feeling about what they might get at this place before they trash more money here. I really wish that this office would run more like a clinic than an assembly line where the doctor quickly hops from one patient to another. If it had to be run like an assembly line, it would be better to allocate more time to each patient. read more

I can easily see why there are so many 5-star reviews for Dr. Nieters --not as clear on why someone would give fewer stars. It might be an oranges and apples kind of thing where people just don't click. ¶ In any case, Dr. John is the best doctor I've ever gone to (and I've gone to a lot of doctors). Dealing much less hopefully by the moment with chronic immune deficiency fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, I was so happy to find Dr. Nieters (on Yelp!) and start treatment. This man is so knowledgeable about the body and how it works that it's both scary and a huge relief. Finally a doctor who actually regards the body as the miracle it is and not an enemy to bombard with toxins, just to quell symptoms. Dr. Nieters is a superb, gentle, and precise Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor as well as an Integrative Medicine doctor, so his encyclopedic knowledge extends to all disciplines ...he even has a few M.D.s as patients (...Hello?) and he is way more savvy about how to interpret lab reports, etc. and what course to take based on the indications. My case is a tough one - I realized that lots of missteps along the way by health care pros created layers of complications over the years, and I was getting worse, not better -- 5 M.D.s told me, variously, that there was no cure, that I'd die with this, etc. etc. yippee! Thanks! Once I started with Dr. Nieters, my body started responding to the myriad components that comprise CFIDS/FM and the difference in my health is jaw-dropping. And I've lost the 50 pounds I gained when everything started REALLY gIt's a long road, but I know that Dr. Nieters is definitely the travel companion to have! Smart, perceptive, funny, warm, decisive....well, danged near perfect. And just about everything responds to this treatment --it sounds crazy to the many of us who think Western medicine is the only/best resource for care. Respiratory infections, stroke, Alzheimer's, infertility, and on and on. Just go. Good health makes a LOT of difference in your life! [And Monique, unlike some managers, runs the front office like a Swiss watch...plus, she doesn't bite, so don't give up the best care you can get because of separate issues.] read more

I had a wonderful treatment by Jennifer Nieters yesterday. She unlocked my hip and relieve low-back pain which has been bothering me for going on for two years now. Not only that, she helped release relentless pain in my neck and shoulder. To boot, she showed me helpful (and realistic) postural exercises and tips to help wake up muscles to support proper alignment. I look forward to another ortho acupuncture treatment! read more

I came john because of my high blood pressure problem. He is absolutely wonderful. He looks at the big picture unlike regular internist with just prescribing higher dose of medication. In few weeks, I am already feeling better with herbal and acupuncture treatment. I had also my first tuina and acupuncture with Tracy. It was absolutely shocking for me how I have missed this type of massage session before. It helped my neck pain more than any other fancy swedisch massages before. She is excellent in tuina. read more

Dr. John Neiters is a wonderful accupuncturist and doctor of Chinese medicine. He has a great supply of herbs as well. Everything is done to make sure the patient has a comfortable visit and Dr. Neiters, a very warm and personable doctor, and will sit down and talk for a while before the treatment. .... Also, I wish to say that Monique at the front desk is a very good and hard working office manager. A review was made regarding her not getting back to them in 10 mins. I'm sure that was an oversight. But it seems rather than waiting 4 hours and pouting about it, one would pick up the phone and call back within no more than 30 minutes. Your loss, Lisa. read more

From my personal experience, I was pretty disappointed with my treatment and care. Dr. Nieters is a nice man, but don't be mistaken, he is running a business first and foremost. I felt that the business of it comes before personal care. He puts the needles in your body, but after that, he's gone. His intern comes in to take the needles out and then you are to check out at the reception area where the receptionist tells you the dosage of the herbs he prescribes. I thought it was odd that the doctor himself didn't check up on me after my session or talk to me about the herbs. He was already in his office taking his next patient. (The first time this happened, I thought maybe he was overbooked that day, but it happened every time so this is how he operates his business) I had a few questions about the herbs so the receptionist interrupted him & his next patient to ask them. I had more questions but I felt bad having to interrupt his session to have them answered. And I felt irritated because if he had just taken a few more minutes with me after the acupuncture, I wouldn't have to keep interrupting. Then she wrote the dosage instructions in messy scribbly handwriting on the top of the lids. With several different bottles of herbs to take I felt confused and overwhelmed. The next day I noticed a bruise the size of a quarter in a spot where a needle was put in. It lasted over a week. I have never had that happen before from acupuncture--I thought he was supposed to be one of the top people in his field??? A few days later, I received a welcome packet from his office which included statements to the effect of "contact us if you have any questions" blah blah blah. Well I did have questions and I emailed the doctor but never got a response. I stopped going to him after a few tries because I was spending WAY too much money for mediocre service and no improvements in my symptoms. He even charged $40 to look over my test results I brought over from my primary doc. It took him all of 5 minutes...He teaches at the TCM school in Oakland and he has his own radio talk show. He looks good on paper and is good at marketing himself. I can't fault him for that. The man knows how to run a business. But if he went the extra mile in his patient care, maybe I may have stuck with him a bit longer. I didn't feel it was worth it. I won't be recommending him to my friends. read more

John Nieters has helped me for the last 15+ years with whatever aches and pains I might have at the time I visit him. I have entered his office barely moving and leave feeling so much better. I have seen him for Back issues, sinus issues, knee issues. I even went and seen him after being hospitalized for 6 days due to a small bowel obstruction. He was able to get me back on the right track after that. The last time I seen him in Oct I was wreck, I had no energy, had real bad anxiety, was depressed. He told me what I had to do to get feeling better. I did all that he said I should do and within 2 months I was a new person. Much happier now and feel the best I have felt in years. John explains things in a way that you can clearly understand. I can't thank him enough for all the things he has done for me. I will continue to see John for all my health needs. If you have any health concerns that a western medical doctor can not help you with, I wouldn't hesitate to go see John. He is truly a life saver :-) read more
