Earlier this year, I had an appointment with Jeremiah Gonzalez, and he made comments that I felt were inappropriate. As a young woman, they made me feel uncomfortable and unsafe. I also had an appointment with their allergist, and it was very difficult to get her to answer the phone or return my calls. She performed a prick test and told me I had multiple allergies. She suggested immunotherapy. I got a second opinion, and it turns out I don't actually have any allergies. Overall, I was really disappointed with my experiences here and wanted to share this so other people can make an informed decision before going to this office.

The last time I saw a doctor doing his patient's vitals, blood pressure, drawing blood for lab testing, it was on an 80's TV show. Having hit the trifecta (but not in a good way) when it comes to chronic health concerns, it's rare, but sometimes a challenge & a half to keep/honor appointments with him. At times, I'm already admitted in hospital for something else dire, juggling clashing appointments or lacking the ability to function at all. Case in point, I just got a letter from his office today, advising that since I refused to secure a follow up appointment he's refusing to treat me in future. My care provider's attention to detail is second to none, but we "dropped the ball" unintentionally somehow. I've been extremely fortunate to be insured & have been treated by great doctors; he's no exception. I'll make sure to resolve this matter next week. The good ones don't grow on trees. The only minus is that his office isn't set up for a email account; otherwise, I'd contact him today. Small price to pay.

He spent an hour and a half with me asking questions and trying to brainstorm reasons for my symptoms. He was thorough and gave me the impression that he was really interested in my experience. He is the only Cardiologist who has spent this kind of time with me and who has talked openly about his passion for his work. She's losing weight but it is far too early to predict final outcome, but so far so good. She's happy. Everything I experienced indicated a first class medical facility and staff, and would have no reservations about recommending or using it. Now other stuff, kind of travel guide stuff, for persons not having surgery. I travel regularly to Mexico and drove, although everyone else with whom I spoke was picked up at San Diego airport by a clinic arranged transfer. GPS apps for "Obesity Goodbye" gave me a 4100 address, which doesn't exist, but the Yelp address and map position is correct. You're not far from the border so you celular phone may have problems because it's receiving both US and Mexican cell towers. Turn it off and back on as kind of a reset. Street parking most hours requires a paid ticket with license plate number displayed on the dash - the machine is across the street by Carl's Junior. Jesus at the office took care of it for me. (also gave me a good tip on an auto detail place). The staff parks inside and they kindly offered to park my car inside as well. Nice people, very accommodating. They will bring you take out food from local places, great Mexican street tacos. There is a 'starbucks' like coffee place about 2 blocks called 'D'Volada" - same types of coffee drinks, food items and smoothies. Calimax is the local supermarket chain- and has a small store nearby. DO take a walk down "La Revo" as Revolucion street is popularly called, it's like 15 blocks to the border, where you see the big arch. Cuban Cigars at La Casa del Habana and the restaurant that created the cesar salad (yes, the most famous Mexican food in the US is the cesar's salad - see my Yelp reviews) Restaurante Cesar, are 5-6 blocks - about halfway to the border. Mexican pharmacies have many medicines cheaper than the US and have a doctor available for consultations who will write prescriptions for a small fee. Take advantage. Shoeshines and haircuts are also much less. Oh , and score points, or at least, don't get demerits with the locals by pronouncing the name correctly , it's TI juana, NOT Tia Juana. Enjoy.

Sheri Burke is part of the team and coordinated the flights and hotel and airport pick up- everything was streamlined and easy. Sheri is a certified nutritionist and is outstanding at her job. When I arrived at the clinic, I was helped right away by the staff. I was apprehensive like most people are before surgery. Dr. Verboonen was reassuring and the research I had done on the Center and on Dr. Verboonen's record and expertise was confirmed. I am now almost at goal weight - 148 pounds. Sometimes I still can't believe it. In addition, the Center provides follow up care and nutrition advice once you get back home. The post-op diet was easy to follow and Sheri was there to help as I transitioned to a new way of eating - much healthier and I don't miss the junk I used to eat. Most of all, I feel like a new person. I never thought I would be this weight again. I feel better, I have more energy, and I am so grateful to Dr. Verboonen, the other doctors who assisted in my surgery, Sheri and the entire staff. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. According to the operative report, there was an unexpected vitrectomy and lens dislocation, leaving her aphakic (without an implanted lens) and requiring multiple additional surgeries and prolonged follow-up care. We understand that complications can happen in any surgery. What has been most disappointing is how everything was handled afterward. The recovery records document that my mother reported severe pain during surgery, rated her pain 10/10, described the procedure as extremely painful, and wanted to file a complaint. The nursing notes also state that the surgeon and anesthesiologist explained the procedure had to be stopped before the lens could be implanted. Yet the operative report contains no meaningful discussion of the severe pain or why the surgery could not be completed. We were left piecing together hundreds of pages of medical records instead of receiving clear answers. Since that day, my mother has undergone multiple procedures, repeated specialist visits, and prolonged treatment. A woman who could once thread a needle and drive independently can no longer pass a DMV vision test because of her vision loss. Patients deserve honesty, compassion, accountability, and transparency when complications occur. Unfortunately, that was not our family's experience.

Unfortunately, my recent experience with Dr Eslani at American Eye Associates in National City fall into this level. Here's what happened: My Glaucoma condition was under control when I had my eye examined by my ophthalmologist in San Francisco Bay in late January. I was instructed to see a Glaucoma specialist to monitor my condition, however. So I made an appointment to see Dr. Eslani. On my first 50-minute visit at this office in July, my eyes were examined only by the staff technicians but not by Dr. Eslani, and I was told to come back another time for a thorough exam. However, this office had issues clarifying my insurance authorization status, and was unable to schedule my appointment till November 5. When I went in, three different assistants measured various aspects of eyes inserting the numbing drops into my eyes three times during these exams before they finally got to the field vision test. The staff member who set this FV testing system was unable to set it up properly, and moved me and the system every time I squinted. Then they finally dilated my eyes at 4:10 pm, which disabled me to drive home in the dark. Ten minutes later, Dr. Eslani finally looked into my eyes, but only shined the light in a few directions and not as thoroughly as other ophthalmologists have done in the past. Around 4:30 pm, Dr. Eslani comes back to the office where I was waiting, and said that he has bad news for me. He proceeded to tell me I am going blind and that the only hope is to start receiving his laser treatment periodically without any guarantee of improvement. Then he filled the prescription for a $90/bottle eye drop even with my Medicare coverage. His staff scheduled a follow up visit for December 3. Desperate and shocked, I had to arrange for a $60 ride back home because I could not drive with my dilated eyes in the dark. Somehow, I felt Dr. Eslani's diagnosis was incorrect. To get a second opinion, I made an appointment with the well respected Glaucoma specialist at UCSD who was able to see me on December 3. She and her competent assistant thoroughly examined my eyes which only took 20 minutes if not less without any 'numbing drops'. Then the doctor told me that my eyes are fine with good pressure readings. The only thing she recommended was a quick YAG capsulotomy procedure to remove the slight cloudiness in my left eye. If you need your eyes examined for Glaucoma, by all means, avoid Dr. Eslani and American Eye Associates.
