I'm torn between the assessment of 2 and 3 stars. (3 being an average, but still positive, rating -- I don't think I can because my cons certainly outweigh the positives) There, it's settled. The hubs and I visited the Civic Center for the first time to attend a Mardi Gras ball. The place is HUGE, but extremely (severely and sorely) outdated. (Pretty sure that's why the city is soon tearing it down!) The restrooms were flooded halfway through the night, the restroom doors were hit or miss on locks, and don't even get me started on the shoddy AC-- you're cool in one room, literally burning up in the next. I did love looking down on the ball's main dance floor from the 2nd floor seating. Oh, and there was plenty parking -- am I reaching now?! Sorry. Did it serve its purpose? Yes! Would I be missing out if I never went back? No, not at all! Overall, it's a shell of an old building (that once was, maybe) that's workable for a few hours (before the flooding), and that's about all I've got on the Mobile Civic Center. I will say that the Mystics of Time is a great job of fixing it up and decorating the venue for their ball!

This tree is part of a very interesting piece of folklore and putative Mobile History. In essence,…read morein 1835, a man (Charles Boyington) was charged, convicted and hanged for the murder of his best friend. On the gallows before the hanging, he proclaimed that an oak tree would grow from this heart as evidence of his innocence. A few years later, someone else confessed to the crime and surprising to most, a tree had already started growing. This is said tree...approximately 190 years old. BTW, Live Oak trees can live up to 500 years. I certainly hope it will.

The legend of this tree is definitely cool. Back in 1835, Charles Boyington was convicted of the…read moremurder of his friend, Nathaniel Frost. Throughout the trial and after his conviction and he sentence to be hanged, Boyington proclaimed his innocence. Just prior to his death, Boyington stated that his innocence would be proven when an oak tree would grow out of his heart and from his grave. Later, two people would confess to the crime, but unfortunately, it was too late for Boyington. An oak tree did indeed grow from the location of where he was buried and still stands today. There are claims that people hear crying and whispering near the tree and attribute it to the ghost of Charles Boyington seeking his vindication. I love these cool discoveries and ghost stories. If you are in Mobile, Alabama, I recommend seeking this tree out.

I really like this park, it is large in my opinion. Cool playground, has something that resembles a…read morexylophone & bongos. Tennis court, basketball court, baseball diamond. Handicapped Accessible restrooms with a push button for the door. At least two or three drinking fountains. Lots of shade from trees, which I love. Benches and picnic tables throughout, some with BBQ pits. A blue building with rainbow painted doors directly in front of the parking lot. Signs advertising free meals for kids & movies in the park directly in front of the blue building. My family, dog, and I enjoyed this park, only issue was someone's dog was running loose no leash or owner, dog appears to live directly across the street from the park. Dog was not vicious, but I had to holler at it to make sure it stayed away from us and my dog. I notice a lot of loose dogs running about near parks here in Mobile, so this is not the first time I have encountered that at a local park. Just be cautious if you are there with pets or children.
