I'm torn between the assessment of 2 and 3 stars. (3 being an average, but still positive, rating -- I don't think I can because my cons certainly outweigh the positives) There, it's settled. The hubs and I visited the Civic Center for the first time to attend a Mardi Gras ball. The place is HUGE, but extremely (severely and sorely) outdated. (Pretty sure that's why the city is soon tearing it down!) The restrooms were flooded halfway through the night, the restroom doors were hit or miss on locks, and don't even get me started on the shoddy AC-- you're cool in one room, literally burning up in the next. I did love looking down on the ball's main dance floor from the 2nd floor seating. Oh, and there was plenty parking -- am I reaching now?! Sorry. Did it serve its purpose? Yes! Would I be missing out if I never went back? No, not at all! Overall, it's a shell of an old building (that once was, maybe) that's workable for a few hours (before the flooding), and that's about all I've got on the Mobile Civic Center. I will say that the Mystics of Time is a great job of fixing it up and decorating the venue for their ball!

Such a great university!…read more While the building is nice, I do think the actual library is subpar; it's more of a common area for students to be social than an academic space for quiet studying, research, reading, etc. The second floor of the building is the "library," but it's mostly couches, some tables and chairs, table games, board games, arcade games, TVs... The actual "library" is very small area of the second floor, marking one side of the second floor of the building. There aren't a ton of books, I think there is ONE private study room (on a first-come, first-served basis), and it's very sad compared to South's library: several floors of MANY books, a lot of computers, MANY private study rooms for groups as well as cubicle areas, and it's understood and enforced to be respectful and quiet there. As a nursing student, it was a bit disappointing there is no formal library or separate building for the School of Nursing. I love the university, but it would be great to see them do more for the academic settings and rein it back a little on the social ones. The social aspects of the university are great, and while nursing students have privileges to be in certain parts of campus for studying regardless of time of day or semester schedule, I think more students could benefit from a formal library-- away from the relaxed environment of loud socializing-- and private study areas within the library. As far as a building for the SoN, only time will tell how/if the funds could provide that...

This tree is part of a very interesting piece of folklore and putative Mobile History. In essence,…read morein 1835, a man (Charles Boyington) was charged, convicted and hanged for the murder of his best friend. On the gallows before the hanging, he proclaimed that an oak tree would grow from this heart as evidence of his innocence. A few years later, someone else confessed to the crime and surprising to most, a tree had already started growing. This is said tree...approximately 190 years old. BTW, Live Oak trees can live up to 500 years. I certainly hope it will.

The legend of this tree is definitely cool. Back in 1835, Charles Boyington was convicted of the…read moremurder of his friend, Nathaniel Frost. Throughout the trial and after his conviction and he sentence to be hanged, Boyington proclaimed his innocence. Just prior to his death, Boyington stated that his innocence would be proven when an oak tree would grow out of his heart and from his grave. Later, two people would confess to the crime, but unfortunately, it was too late for Boyington. An oak tree did indeed grow from the location of where he was buried and still stands today. There are claims that people hear crying and whispering near the tree and attribute it to the ghost of Charles Boyington seeking his vindication. I love these cool discoveries and ghost stories. If you are in Mobile, Alabama, I recommend seeking this tree out.
