11/12/2019 My wife bought a beautiful 13 plus carat aquamarine stone while she lived on St Croix in the USVI years ago. Over the years we have often thought of finding a good custom jeweler to create a beautiful setting for her stone. In July of this year (2019) we moved to Stuart Florida. We took Pat's stone to another local jeweler with decades of experience. The result left much to be desired. We then heard about John David Cooney. We made an appointment to go in to talk with John David. I had come up with a couple of possible ideas and wanted John David's opinion. John David sat down with us, went over our ideas, asked many questions to get an idea of what we were looking for, then began to jot down initial ideas of his own. The end result was a magnificent, hand made, one of a kind, true masterpiece in white gold. John David created an exceptionally bold ring out of white gold that really showed of Pat's large aquamarine to the max. John designed my engagement ring with me and exceeded every expectation I had. I wasn't super clear with my ideas but John took my vision and created a truly one of a kind ring that I will never take off. Every step of the process was enjoyable. He made sure to keep us updated and was so easy to talk to when I wasn't 100% loving part of the design, he changed it until I loved it and was very receptive. My grandmother wanted to gift me the diamond from her wedding ring, but she felt I should wear it on a necklace. Grandma started asking around to see if any of her friends knew an honest jeweler that could do custom work. Her good friend Phyllis gave John a glowing recommendation, so she went to check out his shop and meet him in person. The shop isn't on a main road, but if you know where the only dog park in Stuart is his shop is just past that (off Central Pkwy which is near the intersection of Kanner Hwy and Monterey). It's a cozy little shop and it was John himself who greeted us when we walked in. This is exactly what Grandma and I were looking for, someone that we could meet and be our friend through this process (not like a corporate owned jewelry store where you never meet the actual jeweler because they're all sales people). Before deciding on John, Grandma had met with another local jeweler, who needed twice the time (3 days to order materials, 7 days to make it) and wanted to charge more money to craft a custom necklace setting for the diamond stone from her wedding ring. Besides being an economically better decision, Grandma who is very astute in these matters, knew immediately that John was the person for this job. She can just tell when someone is honest and has a good heart, it's one of her talents. When I got into town, Grandma took me to meet John and we brought the diamond wedding ring with us. John put the diamond up onto a giant screen and showed us the little inclusions and unique marks on the cuts of the facets of the stone. He also analyzed the size and color of my grandma's diamond, making detailed notes on our invoice. We knew there wouldn't be any funny business at John's, and that we would get back the exact same diamond that we were leaving there. This may not be a large concern for people bringing in semi precious stones, but for a valuable diamond like the one on my grandmother's wedding ring it made us feel very secure to know how well documented this diamond was going in and how thorough he was I'm explaining to us the unique markers of our peticular stone. I myself am a painter and creatively speaking I was very impressed with Johns own designs, which were on display at his shop. He makes these spectacular sun dials pendants, which besides looking really cool actually tell time and can be adjusted based on your latitude and longitude. As an artist I am of the Post Modernist school of thought which stipulates that in the best designs, "form follows function," and so I personally felt an alignment with John as he clearly makes pieces that are more than just aesthetically pleasing. Grandma didn't know exactly what she wanted the necklace to look like, so John presented a few options and had some great ideas on how to make the diamond really stand out. He also gave us advice on what kind of chain and metal to use, etc. So of course we decided to go ahead with the custom necklace order, and added two antique rings that we decided to have resized there as well. Only two days later he called to say the piece was ready! The antique rings were not quite ready though, so we waited until the next day when they were done as well to pick everything up. The total time for one custom necklace and two rings resized was only three days, an amazing feat in my opinion. The setting for the necklace is perfect, it cradles the stone making it very secure yet it lets in a lot of light so it really sparkles! I have attached some pictures of the finished piece. John is a very talented jewelry designer (and all around jeweler) and I would recommend him to anyone! The quality of the work is superb and his prices are no more expensive than Joe Schmo down the street (less expensive in the case of this order!). Just call him- even if you already have a place in mind get a second opinion from John. And if you are looking for a unique piece that NO ONE else will have, consider one of his awesome sundials or other creations. After my experience with John to create a custom engagement ring to propose to my fiancé, was beyond words that I can explain. Immediately I was greeted with comfort and a sense of ease to my worries about getting my ring done on time and with care. I was on a tight deadline to get a custom ring done that included 3 generations of family stones into a beautiful ring that I could propose with in New York to my girlfriend. John immediately opened the door to the challenge and we got started right away. What made me realize how great he was, was the fact he didn't start off asking my budget or what I wanted. He started off wondering about our story and the significance of the stones in the family along with what does she like and a little bit of background of us. That really caught me off guard and I had a sense that he really cared about how special this ring was. I knew right then i came to the right person for this ring. Everything was done to the extent of professionalism that no other jeweler I have ever met would do. Upon our start everything was documented from sketches to every diamond and piece I brought in, while he showed me on the TV the shape and color of every diamond going into great detail. After that he started to sketch the old school way of drawing and design while I described the imagination I had of the ring. Being in the Design and Architectural Field for a couple of years I could appreciate the quality of the designs and skill he put into it. Following the weeks that had gone by I received many emails from John on everything which I really appreciated. I would get almost a daily status of how the process was going and if there were any steps that we could for go to get the process moving faster. I was a much ease through the process which included no pain or agony. Johns professionalism and character was beyond this world as every time I would go in it would be more than just me being a normal customer. He would have this kind attitude towards anyone who walked through the door as if they were a friend. When the ring was done as I might add it was done early and right on budget, I was blown away. I almost lost it to how incredible the ring looked and how much time and detail he put into the ring, there was no detail missed. The way he designed it that every diamond sparkled and would catch your eye. It was beyond what i had imagined. When I had proposed to my fiancé she broke down in tears to how beautiful was and most of all the meaning behind to the history of the ring. In a world where it is hard to know who to trust - John is the real deal! We had bought a heart shaped diamond ring for our 40th anniversary in a port where our cruise ship had stopped. When I got home and had it appraised I realized we had really gotten ripped off by a big jewelry company which I won't name. I was thankfully able to return the ring and by this time was a little skiddish about jewelers, but needed someone to help me design a ring for the new diamond we had purchased with the guidance of the independent appraiser who had looked at my original ring. She recommended John to us and said there is no one better and she was right! He designed a new ring setting for my new heart shaped diamond and was so patient and helpful getting my ideas onto paper and then into reality. That was not easy, because I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted. But he did some sketches and eventually we worked together and formed a design. The finished product was exactly what he drew and I was super happy! He even squared off the bottom of the ring so it wouldn't twirl around on my finger - brilliant! A couple years later, he worked with me to add 2 baguettes on each side of the diamond and it is beautiful. He went above and beyond what I had hoped for and now my ring is a masterpiece built by a master! After working with John, I would NEVER go to anyone else - it is great to know that you can leave your jewelry with him and it is safe. I would recommend him without hesitation to anyone looking for a jeweler because he is honest, kind, creative, hard working, and a man of integrity and his prices are beyond fair.
