I didn't want to give Dr. Patel any stars. On May 14, 2013 I was told that they wanted to do an…read moreangiogram to check on some blockages that were previously diagnosed. My blood work was fine and my ekg was fine, so this was not an emergency. I have had two other angiograms at Rochester General Hospital without incident, so this wasn't my first time. I asked the nurse immediately after they told me, if they were going to sedate me. I have had many years of poking and proding done to my body, and at this point I get anxious and panicky. I told them that I needed the sedation to prevent "freaking out" on the doctor. I was assured that they would sedated me, and that his nurse would explain things to me when we got to the room. That was my first flag. They tried to locate a site for a second IV, and were unsuccessful, thoughtout their attempts, I was anxious and kept asking about the sedation. Again, I was reassured that it would ok. In my last two experiences, an anestheologist and the doctor himself/herself would come into the room and inform me about the aspects of the procedure and what to expect. Nothing like that this time. While in the room the anestheologist would advance some of the sedation to relax me while they wheeled me to the room where the procedure would take place. Again, not this time. I arrived at the room, Dr. Patel was there with the nurse that accompanied me there to the room, and about four other people. I was getting nervous, and asked again about the sedation, while they were rubbing the "blue" alcohol on my right arm and groin area (the targeted place was right arm, the groin was prepped just in case). Dr. Patel blurted out "Well, with this new Obamacare, people are going to have to deal with alittle pain now and then." I was shocked by the comment and I replied "Pain? The pain isn't what is bothering me, it's the panic attack I will have if you don't sedate me. I can deal with pain, but I don't want to freak out on you and I will" After that exchange, he asked me to raise my right arm so I complied. When I set it back down a saw a young man come into my sight and I asked him "Are you the one that is going to sedate me?" As I said that he had a confused look on his face. Then Dr. Patel asked me how long I had been diabetic, just as he asked me, I felt a sharp pain in my armpit. I said "DID YOU START"????? I started to panic, I clammed up and my breathing got quick, I tried to remain calm. Dr. Patel snapped at me "That's why I don't sedate, I want you to feel what I'm doing" I was never told he didn't sedate, I wasn't told either way up to that point. I began to hyperventilate, luckily I didn't trigger an asthma attack. The nurse kept asking me if I wanted to hold her had, I kept slapping her hand away. I did not want to be touched!! Voices kept saying to relax. Too late! I was in a full blown panic attack and Dr. Patel kept going, shoving the cathetor in my heart, I could feel it clear as day. He finally yelled for someone to give mesome Versid. Whatever dose I was given was't working, I still was in a full blown attack, I was shaking and scared. My adrenaline was sky high, I could feel it. He finally ended the procedure and grumbled a few comments. I was asked to slide over to the other bed and was taken to the recover area. When I got there my blood pressure was extremely high, and I could not slow my breathing no matter how hard I tried. Dr. Patel came in and asked "Why are you doing this?" I couldn't answer, but my Aunt who was holding my hand said, "Because you didn't sedate her!" He replied "I don't like to sedate during this procedure, it's not necessary." My Aunt said that I had been sedated two other times and he snapped "I don't care what they do over at Rochester General, this is how I do it here!!" My breathing finally calmed, my blood pressure came down. I was taken back to my room and given an Ativan to relax. The Versid finally took affect, I fell asleep finally. Meanwhile, today is May 26, 2013, I have a huge bruise on my right arm, and my arm aches, I think while he was cramming that cathater in my arm and heart, the vein was clamped down and he continured to shove it in. My arm feels like the nerves are damaged. I will be making an appointment with my neurologist this week to make sure he didn't damage my nerves in my arm. I am completely disgusted by Dr. Patels, lack of compassion, his political comment which made absolutely no sense to make during that exchange, and his unprofessionalism. What motivation does Dr. Patel have not to sedate a patient for this procedure. The sedations used, keeps the patient calm, but awake enough to respond or react should the doctor need to communicate. His insistance not to sedate served him absolutely no purpose and put me in a possible life threatening situation. Isn't patient care and comfort the most important thing?

Technician who did echocardiogram was extremely cold and unfriendly and seemed very angry to be…read morethere. Not what you want when your chest is exposed and a transducer is being moved over your upper body for a quarter hour. Would never return as there are more patient focused practices in the area. Also lost PCP referral delaying scheduling and also failed to send results to PCP until third business day following test day. Results only sent after PCP contacted them; had been told they'd be sent the day following test. Poorly run with uncaring staff -- not what I want from a cardiology practice.

The other reviews surprise me! I have NEVER had a problem with staff at either location! (I go to…read morethe Newark, NY office.) My Cardiologist is wonderful. My questions are always answered and never in a condescending way. The office staff is courteous and helpful. I am comfortable that my doctor is thoughtful in what he prescribes for me, and is current in his knowledge of treatments for my condition. Kay G.

There are many staff who are not wearing masks. I've seen many contractors who are not being told to mask up. Flu numbers are very high in this area and whether you accept it or not Covid is still rampant. Shouldn't the hospital have a better responsibility to protect their patient? Update: now they are saying it's only in inpatient areas not outpatient. How ridiculous is that?
