I came in on an emergency before a night flight. I had a filling that was giving me some pain when chowing. Dr. Cottingham filed it off a little and it made it so much better! I still need to go to my regular doctor just to check a couple of things with it but he was absolutely great with fitting me in and helping read more

Dr. Cottingham correctly diagnosed my gum condition and prescribed the right set of medications to address the problem. Prior to this, I was prescribed salt water rinses and suffered for weeks before coming to him. He's an old school dentist with impressive skill and experience. read more

Dr Cottingham is an excellent dentist! I've tried numerous dentists in the Bay Area and he is by far uniquely knowledgeable and a step ahead of the rest! My prior dentist, (a personal friend if mine), moved and I was heart broken. Since then, I've bounced around looking for a dentist that doesn't charge more than needed, is honest and experienced. Dr Cottingham is a doctor that met all 3 qualifications. He gives his diagnosis straight and looks for the most cost effective choice. His integrity is equal to his knowledge! I couldn't be happier! He's rude and critical. I've always had weak teeth and need lots of work done. Because it involves so much work, I've been fearful of having it done. He got angry with me about it. He totally lacks compassion and is highly critical. read more

Amazing experience. Went in to smooth out a chipped tooth - didn't even need to numb anything. Ended up going back for cleaning and subsequent referral for wisdom tooth removal. Wish I didn't have to move any for school. Best wishes to you Dr. Cottingham, and best Dentist I have ever met. read more

I am over 60 years old now and Dr. Cottingham's father did my dentistry when I was a teenager and even before that. ALL of the fillings he did for me are still functioning perfectly and have never been replaced! This is an amazing place to get your dentistry done. You will be happy you did decades from now! I am. read more

Dr. Cottingham has been my dentist for 30 years. Besides six month cleanings, any time I have a dental issue or question, I go to him. I've had a lot of dental problems in the last five years, and he always has a solution. I took my 94 year old dad in to see if Dr. Cottingham could help him with a front tooth that had fallen out!! Dr. Cottingham somehow managed to reattach it. My dad is now 97 1/2, and the tooth is still attached! Dr. Cottingham is kind, positive and, most importantly, extremely skilled. If I could give him 10 stars, I would. read more

Dr Cottingham has been my dentist since moving to the area over 4 years ago. I have even moved to Burlingame but haven't switched dentists because he and his staff are so awesome. I've been fortunate with my teeth - never a cavity or anything more intrusive than braces as a teen. That changed a few weeks ago due to a cycling accident, and I've had my first experience with novocaine, root canals, and what I'd call serious dental work. Dr Cottingham has been patient and kind, and he's explained everything as he's done it, which has definitely alleviated my fear! He even takes time to check on me after procedures. I highly recommend Dr Cottingham and will never switch dentists! read more

I've been going to Dr. Cottingham for years and I wouldn't go anywhere else. He's great technically, he's great at keeping you comfortable, the office is efficient, and everybody is friendly and responsive. I've referred my family and my employees to him. Everybody is happy. Oh, and his prices are reasonable, probably because he's not wasting money on a high-rent, fancy office. He has always given me good advice that was honest. He never pushes services or procedures you don't need. His work is incredibly precise and durable. You can't go wrong here. read more

My family and I have been going to Dr. Cottingham for over 25 years! We have had nothing but great experiences with the entire staff! Dr. Cottingham is a very professional, patient, and compassionate person. Lisa at the front desk is the sweetest human being on planet earth, she is so welcoming and personable every time we walk in. Overall, all staff have been nothing but welcoming and extremely helpful! Dr. Cottingham is the best! read more

Before going to him , I signed up with those fancy "Dentist on the campus" , "on-the-move" kind of dentist who visit every Thursday in my office. They are actually "companies" who have to take out expenses (of their mobile clinic van and everything) from you. I was told 6-7 cavities to be fixed and RCT and what not ... I knew it was con thing so I searched dentists in my local area on yelp and that's how I found Dr. John. Dr. John Cottingham was very good. He was very patient and thorough with exam. He also did all the inspection and cleaning by himself and also mentioned there is only 1 cavity and also showed why it's a cavity and how it looks like. Most of the things (related to front desk) were in order. I certainly would recommend considering him. Only thing , which doesn't bother me btw, one might want to change is that his office still looks like that of 90s. But if you care only for quality of service and not by appearance then must try him. read more

I met today Dr. Cottingham for a second opinion. He did a full examination of my situation before giving me his opinion. He wanted to make sure I understand, he was very honest and honesty is hard to find. I highly recommend him and I know I will continue going to him. read more

Dr. Cottingham is amazing at what he does! He is very gentle and sensitive to how you are feeling with the work he is doing. He has replaced a few fillings that were broken and fixed the white spots on my teeth, something that no dentist has been able to do! I wish I had gone to him sooner! One of my favorite things about his office, is they work evenings two days a week, which is very helpful for my busy work schedule. I would highly recommend him and his staff! read more

I started going to Dr. Cottingham under the recommendation of my husband and sister-in-law, who have been going to his office for years. He has left such an AMAZING impression on me in the last 6 months that I have now recommended him to my mother and several coworkers. First, the most amazing part: he made me completely comfortable while using needles. I hate hate hate needles, but he made me calm, comfortable, reminded me to breathe, and talked me through the whole thing. I have never been so un-anxious around needles in my entire life. Other great things about Dr. C (there are SO many) include his patience and matter-of-fact attitude. I have had a lifetime of horrible dentists who acted without explaining and whispered to their assistants behind my back: Dr. C takes as much time as I want for explanations of exactly what he is doing and what the next steps are for my dental care. He also lets me stop the procedures at any moment to cough, rest, or relax my jaw (I have TMJ). I like the technology he uses in the office: at my first appointment, he used a camera to go tooth-by-tooth and take a full status report of every flaw. Each patient room is outfitted with a screen that displays what he's looking at, and lets me understand which tooth/flaw he's talking about. On subsequent appointments, he constantly refers back to the photos he took. I feel very knowledgeable about my dental health :) His office staff is incredibly nice, and his hygienist even remembered and asked about my wedding after it happened. Similar to Dr. C, they are very explanatory during appointments, and are more than willing to answer even the silliest of my questions. And bonus: it may seem small, but it meant a lot that Dr. C had blankets available and offered one to me when I was cold in his office. I thought it was very thoughtful. I highly recommend him to any one looking for a great dentist in the South Bay! And don't forget to rubber tip ;) read more

Dr.Cottingham is very professional, knowledgeable and kind. My tooth broke under my crown on my frontal teeth. After examination he offered 3 options. I decided to go with fastest and more fitting for me. Dr. Cottingham salvaged my crown and used a technique I didn't know was possible but he explained to me how it worked for my situation so at the end of my visit I walked out with tooth fixed. He works fast and his staff is very friendly and makes you feel comfortable. Have to say after today's treatment my lifelong fear of dentists is ending. Thank you Dr. Cottingham. read more

"Alright, now this next part is a bit jumpy. Sometimes it can be a bit rough, but I'm going to be as careful with it as I can. I do need to do this part of the cleaning though" "So here, I'm starting with the backs of the teeth since they're less sensitive. The fronts of your front teeth are the most sensitive part, so I like to start with the easy stuff and ease into the rest" And honestly, by the time he got to the front teeth, my mouth was so used to it that I didn't really notice the difference. Dr. Cottingham is fantastic, and today I had an excellent situation with him for a normal check in/clean up where he used water vibrations of some sort to clean my teeth. The above was how he explained it all while doing it, and it made me realize that I couldn't be luckier to know this dentist. The staff and Dr. Cottingham himself are all very friendly, excited to socialize, and keep your visit under an hour. It's great! I actually feel comfortable about the idea of returning to the Dentist every six months here, and best yet, he really pays attention. One word out of my mouth about my CS major and wanting to make video games for a living, and he went on to talk about every major thing he could in his life that related to games. I was delighted listening to his conversation while he worked, and he even made a good effort to remember my recommendation for Journey. His medical knowledge is down to earth, and his words are wise. He's corrected two of my own failed assessments of past problems (teeth falling out feeling was really caused by nasal passages, sensitivity to cold was not stress/teeth-grinding but gingivitis), and explains right up to the point of introducing a couple new words, but no further than what you understand. Again, a fantastic Dentist, and I think I'll be staying here as long as I can. read more

On just my very first appointment Dr. Cottingham and his staff made me feel like I had been seeing them for years. They were not just friendly but talked me through every part of the procedure. I had been suffering from tooth pain for two days, they fit me in last minute on a Saturday morning. They have headphones and a large selection of music for you, I turned on and tuned out that drill- what a great offering! I was a little extra nervous because my new little son was at home and this was my first time away from him. Dr. Cottingham took that into consideration when educating me about the numbing options because of breastfeeding. He also was great about letting me know "about 15 more minutes... Two more things then 5 minutes" I really felt that they cared about my comfort. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Cottingham's since I was 3 years old and I will continue until I am 103. I used to love going through his treasure chest at the end of my visits when I was a kid and wish I could still get away with it. Now that I am older, I continue to go to him because I can trust him. I have moved away from the area a couple of times, but I still come back to see Dr. C because he is not only professional, but always up-beat. I recommend others to him whenever I get the chance and I will be sending my children to him when I have them. Please don't retire, Dr. C. read more

We are patients of Dr. Cottingham. You will not find a more compassionate, "patient":) dentist. His dental assistants are great too. His office staff are professional and extremely polite. Scheduling is right on, Dr. Cottingham is all about the patient, we have never waited in his office for more than a minute or two before being seen. If you tend to be apprehensive when going to the dentist, as I have been, his quiet manner, really has a calming effect. You will not be disappointed. read more

Dr. Cottingham and his staff are great! Dr. Cottingham is very nice and very professional. He's also very patient. I have had a fear of dentists since I was very young. Dr. Cottingham knows this and has made every visit fear-free. He explains every procedure to me and makes me feel completely at ease. I like that he tells me that I am the boss and that I can tell him to stop at any time (that's important to those of us who are afraid of dentists!). I can tell he cares about his patients too. His staff is great too! They are all very nice and friendly and make me feel at ease as soon as I walk in to the office. What is also great is that he offers evening-hour appointments two days a week. I would very definitely recommend Dr. Cottingham to anyone looking for a dentist. read more

Dr. Cottingham looks like he's spent a lot of time on the ski slopes. Or maybe I'm just guessing at that because of the ski-themed exam room. I like that one better than the duck-hunting room. I've been going to Dr. Cottingham for at least 15 years. Maybe longer. He's a keeper. read more

I've had several dentists in my lifetime and some were good and some were bad. John is the best there is. If your the type of person who's afraid of the dentist he's the perfect guy for you. I have been going to John for 6 years and I have never felt pain, never. Yesterday, I needed a crown and he put a temporary in in about 30 minutes with ease, no problem. They even gave me headphones to listen to music while they fixed my tooth. He is awesome and his staff is very nice too. read more

Great Office, Great Service, Great Advice from an experienced Dentist! I'm a big believer that you should never be misinformed or mislead into unnecessary procedures for your teeth or health. The biggest testament to this is when Dr. Cottingham first question to me was "are you happy with your teeth?" I much appreciated that as I haven't had too many issues with my teeth. But even then, Dr. Cottingham did a very in depth and thorough assessment of my teeth. He did this to help me understand what was going on with my teeth. I do highly recommend Dr. Cottingham and his office. I was immediately and promptly served by the staff. Since I hadn't been to the dentist in over a year, the hygienist did a great job cleaning my teeth and taking the time to remove spots from the top of my teeth. I never thought I was being hurried out, and they really make you feel like a real patient instead of "customer". What I appreciated the most from Dr. Cottingham and the hygenist is the time and effort they took to educate me on what I could be doing for my teeth to improve my oral health. The doctor even took the time to show me via camera which teeth needed attention, why, and what I could do to improve on them. They even showed me how to use a rubber tipped toothbrush and a regimen to accompany it. All round, no dentist to date has ever gone to this level of care and education to help me understand my oral health. I thank you for my last visit and actually look forward to the next visit.
