Our family has serious dental fears-- I avoided the dentist for TEN years due to overwhelming anxiety, and my husband is very sensitive to dental pain. With six kids, we knew it was time to set a good example and find a dentist. It is strange and rare to say that a dentist can change a person's life, but Dr. Pagonis's patient, reassuring explanations of not just the dentistry work I needed, but dental anatomy in general (I had been having weekly nightmares for years that my teeth would somehow become loose and just fall out) absolutely ended my long-standing fears of dentistry and dental issues in general. She takes a VERY thorough and gentle approach to educating children about dental care and what will happen when they are receiving dental services. I have been meaning to write a review for some time, but an event this evening reminded me why I needed to write a recommendation for Dr. Pagonis.
My eight year old daughter broke a tooth while playing with a friend. Had this event happened before my chats and visits with Dr Pagonis, this would have actually caused me to faint-- my fears were THAT profound. But tonight, I knew that Dr Pagonis would be able to take care of it. We went to the office immediately to be seen on an emergency basis (it is an adult tooth and was causing great discomfort). My daughter has, in the past, become oppositional and resistant when her pediatrician asked to look in her throat using just a tongue depressor, so I assumed that some sort of restraint was going to be necessary to get anywhere near my daughter with a novacaine needle. Dr. Pagonis sat down with her and showed her each instrument and asked, "May I use this to look at your tooth?" I appreciated this person-centered approach; respect for individual choice and self determination is an important factor in reducing fears. Before I knew it, Dr. Pagonis was saying, "There aren't going to be any surprises. No surprises. I'm going to put this gel on your tooth to make it go to sleep, and now I'd like you to close your eyes and you'll feel the pinch." I was absolutely amazed that my daughter was in total comfort during the entire procedure and did not even appear to be nervous.
I really think that Dr Pagonis's personal convictions about what dentistry should be like, as well as her personal stories that she shares with patients about her own difficulty in receiving the appropriate amount of local anesthesia (and her particular sensitivity to this issue for all of her patients), has made her an incredible, excellent dentist.
Since this has already become quite a lengthy review, I'll just briefly state the very significant aspect of her office staff-- Kristina has assisted us with billing, super-bills for our flex spending justifications, and every aspect of the administrative side to the dental experience. She is cheerful, helpful, and attentive.
I am so pleased that our family found this practice. read more
