I first met Dr. Waters in June of 2025 after I had been diagnosed by my optometrist with…read moreAge-related Macular Degeneration. My family doctor, believing that an ophthalmologist is the most knowledgeable about eye diseases, recommended that I make an appointment with Dr. Waters, so I did. I left his office that day in June feeling relieved that my AMD was in the beginning stages and that there was little risk of me losing my sight. In the following months, the vision in my left eye was an ongoing issue. It felt like it was not working with my right eye, sometimes affecting my balance. My optometrist had diagnosed me with early-stage cataracts needing monitoring but not surgery yet, and he believed my dry eyes were causing my left-eye trouble. I thought that perhaps it was the AMD and returned to Dr. Waters. That's when he told me I did not have AMD and that it was the cataracts causing my problem. Surprised by this, I asked, "So you mean I can tell people I do NOT have macular degeneration?" He replied with a "yes," and I believed him. He even told me I did not need to take AREDS 2, the vitamin that slows the progress of AMD. He said they were "overkill." Wow! What a relief! Next came the cataract surgery. After a discussion with him and one of his assistants, I felt confident that the Premium Lens Implant Symfony was my best option. I looked forward to no longer needing reading glasses, but, unfortunately, that was not to be. While the surgery in my right eye, my good one, went well, the left eye continued to give me the same problem. Next came the laser treatment in the left eye. No difference. Then came a second laser treatment in the left eye. Still, the words I read were always blurred without my reading glasses. His next recommendation was a laser treatment in my right eye and then Lasik surgery in my left one. I became alarmed at this point. In addition to what the insurance company had covered, I had already paid him $4,954.40, and I honestly could not see any better than the first time I saw him. I made an appointment with an ophthalmologist at U of M Kellog Eye Center and another with my optometrist. Both doctors retested me and agreed that I absolutely do have AMD and that it is worse in my left eye. Both also agreed that any further laser treatments or Lasik surgery would NOT be a good idea and that the lens in my left eye was probably not a good choice. I cannot understand how a doctor with Dr. Waters' experience could misdiagnose AMD and advise me the way he did. I feel that he endangered my vision and took advantage of me financially. I have lost not only a lot of money but also my trust in and respect for him.

I have wore glasses since I was 10 years old and it is so cool to get up in the moring and not have to find my glasses to get out of bed. Thank You So Much!

Excellent quality service!…read more I've been here for eye appointments four times now to clear up a very bad eye infection after I was referred to them by my primary care physician's office. My regular optometrist (who is also quite good) was not capable of either getting me in last minute, nor was he equipped to treat the infection. The doctor that I saw (Dr. Mullinex) was excellent and got to the bottom of the problem immediately. It was serious and required treatment that nearly led to surgery, but it was eradicated very quickly. I'm so happy they were able to squeeze me in last minute. Not for nothing, MEI is expensive and my insurance co-pays per visit were still $30 apiece, but they definitely are worth every penny. I would recommend them to anyone.

This was my first experience with Michigan Eye Institute, and unfortunately, I was very…read moredisappointed. Their prices were significantly higher than other optical locations I've used. What was even more frustrating was the billing. I paid in full when I picked up my contacts and glasses. About a month later, I received a bill for an additional amount. When I called to ask about it, I was told, "Sorry, you received that bill in error. Please disregard it." Then, six months after my original service, I received another bill stating that I owed an additional $60. In my opinion, this is extremely poor billing and customer service. If I pay my bill in full at the time of service and am later told that an additional bill was sent in error, I should not have to worry about receiving another unexpected charge months later. Based on my experience, I would recommend comparing prices and considering other optical providers before choosing Michigan Eye Institute.

It took several calls and complaints to get it rectified in my insurance's company's favor and mine. This was ridiculous. I was referred to this office only because my other eye doctor was not available at the time. I wouldn't choose to go here, but I needed to be seen by another eye doctor immediately. I was not impressed by much about this place. I wasn't too happy about the referral here and have since switched back to my regular optometrist, whom I am happier with and they don't mess up insurance paperwork and co-pay invoices, either. The behavior seemed pretty unprofessional to me and the screw up was more than a little inconvenience. I shouldn't need to fix their mistakes. It was a big waste of energy.

I had a very poor experience here. First, refraction was done by someone who did not know what she…read morewas doing, as witnessed first by her poking me in the eye when she didn't realize there was no lens in the refractor, and secondly by the person who was busy taking my medical history saying "Sorry, she's just learning how to do this." I have no faith at all in my glasses prescription being correct. About 20 minutes later, the ophthalmologist came in. He briefly looked in my eyes with a scope, all the while talking very fast about his unmatched experience at cataract removal (hundreds of procedures, low infection rate, etc.) He made no remarks about whatever he saw or didn't see in my eyes, going on about how satisfied his mother was with the cataract surgery he had performed on her 12 years ago. When I expressed some hesitation about scheduling the surgery (since no one--not even him--had told me at this point that I even had cataracts, so I was kind of trying to absorb the information), he immediately began to up-sell me, offering a more expensive (out of pocket) cataract lens that would allow me to stop wearing glasses. After about 4 minutes in the room, he paused his rapid-fire monologue for breath, and I jumped in with some questions I had about dry eye and glaucoma. Rather than addressing them, he said I would have to make another appointment if I wanted to be evaluated for those, but mentioned I should start using a special eyewash before that appointment. At no point did he ask if I had questions or talk about anything but his desire to sell me a cataract operation. When I was checking out, I mentioned the special eyewash to the person waiting on me (after she had confirmed twice that I really did not want to make an immediate appointment for surgery). She took a bottle from the shelf and said, "I just started in this position so I don't actually know how to use this, but I've overheard others say to apply it twice a day and wipe it off with a dry cotton ball." When I got home, I saw that the instructions said once a day and wipe off with a wet cotton ball. My eye doctor recently closed his practice, and when I made this appointment I was looking for a new one. As you can imagine, I'm still looking.

I started to have a short fuse after trying to ask him questions about my condition and being treated as if I was taking up too much of his precious time. The time spent with the doctor was no more than 10-15 minutes including him looking at my eyes. I was respectful but disappointed by the way the appointment went. The front desk was not helpful when I asked to see a manager. They said there was none but I could fill out a survey. I suspect they are scheduling in such a way that the staff is feeling rushed. No one will probably even read the survey. Why don't doctors get it when patients complain of being dismissed and disrespected? It makes such a difference in the way things go.

I see nothing wrong with your eyes." And that was it. I had to see two other eye doctors afterwards so that they would finally figure out what was wrong because I suddenly couldn't see well in the daytime. It is not great news when the doctor can't find what is wrong, it is great news when I get help, which I didn't. It got far worse when I talked to the manager of his place in Dearborn. She was patronizing, raising her voice at me, and treating me like nuisance. Other people who worked there were really nice, but they seemed afraid both of the doctor and the young manager who reminded me of the "Mean girls" film more than a professional establishment.

I am now just going to see a different Dr. in a different place, because I can't deal with their strong-arm practices!! Like strong-arming you into having a yearly physical and trying to tell you it is required by your insurance company when in fact it isn't!! Only to get more money out of them and you, when some have to pay in cash for these services, my insurance company has told me repeatedly that this is NOT required!! just to see your Doc for something simple like the flu!! even the Michigan Medical Board is upset about this type of mis-practice!! You should be able to see your doctor for what medial concerns you have without being forced to have something else done first that you don't need or want just to be seen for what you are worried or concerned about in the first place!! Very disappointed in where this office has gone!
