It took several calls and complaints to get it rectified in my insurance's company's favor and mine. This was ridiculous. I was referred to this office only because my other eye doctor was not available at the time. I wouldn't choose to go here, but I needed to be seen by another eye doctor immediately. I was not impressed by much about this place. I wasn't too happy about the referral here and have since switched back to my regular optometrist, whom I am happier with and they don't mess up insurance paperwork and co-pay invoices, either. The behavior seemed pretty unprofessional to me and the screw up was more than a little inconvenience. I shouldn't need to fix their mistakes. It was a big waste of energy.

I would not recommend East Eye Michigan. From scheduling my appointment to picking up my glasses…read moreand trial contacts, this experience was frustrating. When I called to schedule, the scheduler was rude and short with me. I asked whether they checked eye pressure during a routine eye exam. She told me they did not and that I would need a separate appointment. When I arrived for my exam, the eye technician told me they do check eye pressure during the exam. I arrived early and had no issues with the eye technician. Then I saw Dr. Shaffer. I explained that my current glasses prescription was not correct. After several adjustments, she settled on a prescription and ordered trial contacts. When I picked up my trial contacts and had them checked, the prescription still wasn't right. I pointed that out, and Dr. Shaffer adjusted the contact prescription. I did not bring up my glasses prescription at that visit. As the doctor, she should have recognized that my glasses prescription might also need to be adjusted and addressed that with me. A week later, I returned for my glasses and another set of trial contacts. When I asked whether my glasses corrected my vision to 20/20, the staff member told me they did not. I explained that my job requires my vision to be corrected to 20/20, and she brought over a manager. The manager discussed my eye condition in a room full of customers, which made me uncomfortable. She insisted that the doctor had already explained that she could not correct my vision to 20/20. That conversation never happened. Even when Dr. Shaffer adjusted my contacts, she did not tell me that she was unable to correct my vision to 20/20. When I tried to explain my job's vision requirements, the manager spoke down to me. She brought up that a doctor in the office flies planes and that she lives near an airport, as though those things meant she understood my job's medical requirements better than I do. I felt dismissed and gaslit. My concern is the lack of clear communication about my corrected vision and the way I was treated when I asked questions. I deserved a clear explanation from the doctor and a respectful, private conversation about my eye health.

I started to have a short fuse after trying to ask him questions about my condition and being treated as if I was taking up too much of his precious time. The time spent with the doctor was no more than 10-15 minutes including him looking at my eyes. I was respectful but disappointed by the way the appointment went. The front desk was not helpful when I asked to see a manager. They said there was none but I could fill out a survey. I suspect they are scheduling in such a way that the staff is feeling rushed. No one will probably even read the survey. Why don't doctors get it when patients complain of being dismissed and disrespected? It makes such a difference in the way things go.

I see nothing wrong with your eyes." And that was it. I had to see two other eye doctors afterwards so that they would finally figure out what was wrong because I suddenly couldn't see well in the daytime. It is not great news when the doctor can't find what is wrong, it is great news when I get help, which I didn't. It got far worse when I talked to the manager of his place in Dearborn. She was patronizing, raising her voice at me, and treating me like nuisance. Other people who worked there were really nice, but they seemed afraid both of the doctor and the young manager who reminded me of the "Mean girls" film more than a professional establishment.
