Seriously so beautiful! Not only was the staff friendly, fun, and accommodating, they really made our day a special one! The winery itself is super unique and special. There are farm animals, old oak trees, a ton of varietals growing on the property, they offered to let us take kale home from the garden, they are biodynamic, you can buy snacks, or bring your own..which we did, they have fire pits at the tables, and an actual fire pit, they have breathtaking views, and a gorgeous sunset. Their wine bottles are beautiful too with art that is painted by a friend! Hands down my favorite wine tasting experience to date! I will absolutely be back and highly recommend!! read more

One of our first outings in early spring as the pandemic entered it's first full year. Johan did a great job of spacing people out. It was all outside at this time. I'm not sure what the space looks like on the inside. A really nice day and great service. They let you enjoy each pour and on a hot day, kept the water coming as well. Beautiful scenic countryside to look out on while enjoying the wine. The staff were very accomodating and we purchased a few bottles for later on. Hannah is the best. We got to see the very efficiently stored barrels including a Beckham amphora pot and an EGG. The tasting room is surrounded by white oak trees, all the wine is fun and summery but amazing reds 100% estate and biodynamic. We bought multiple bottles and will definitely be back! read more

Would it be too cliche to say I left the place feeling like family? I don't care, I'm going with that. I originally planned to visit a few vineyards in the region one Friday but, once I had my first glass of wine and my first slice of pizza at Johan, I didn't feel the need to go to any of the other spots on my list. Fantastic wine (we enjoyed a rose and couple of pinots), a picturesque view, wonderful staff and amazing pizza. I'll be back for sure. read more

A little off the beaten path of wineries in the Eola Hills or Van Duzer corridor areas and worth the trip to visit. We saw Johan Vineyards sign in April when visiting nearby Left Coast Cellars and although out of time that day, we planned a return trip to Johan Vineyards. We made that trip a couple of weeks ago. THE TASTING ROOM: At the top of a long and climbing road, we found a charming, cozy tasting room that flies the Norwegian flag of the owner, Dag Johan Sundby, who is proud of his heritage. The entire site has great views looking out over part of the 85 acres of vineyards and the pastoral setting beyond. There is also a small tasting patio off the side of the tasting room where you can sit and sip wine and take in the tranquility. Had we known that patio was there, we might have ordered take out from Left Coast Cellars' Cafe, where we had just enjoyed lunch on this day, to eat on this tasting patio with a glass of Johan's wine. Tasting fee is nominal here ($5 as I remember) and waived with a single bottle purchase. A big thumbs up for the tasting room hostess who was most friendly and knowledgeable about the wines and an enthusiastic representative of the same. SPECIAL EVENT JULY 14 WOULD BE A GOOD TIME TO VISIT: If you were planning a visit, you might consider July 14 to be a good introductory occasion as the winery is hosting a release party (11-5) for their new Farmlands label wine and are waiving tasting fees that day. Were we not three plus hours drive away, I'd be eager to try the Farmlands' label white wine (the other release will be a Pinot Noir) as it is said to be a blend of Chardonnay - Gruner Veltilner (one of my favs) and Pinot Gris. Some of the proceeds of the Farmlands' label wines at the July 14th even wil goo to the non profit group Friends of Family Farms. So that makes another great reason to attend. WINES: This is a winery focused on biodynamic wine making principles. Wine making is never an easy art / science and using biodynamic principles makes it even more challenging. Which makes it even more fun to go support a small, boutique, owner operated winery like this. That said, we were just lukewarm about the wines we tasting on the day of our visit. The Pinot Gris and Vin Gris were more acidic than we prefer, although we bought a bottle of the latter ,and the Pinot Noir wasn't a good fit for our palates. In the world of wine it is different strokes for different folks. That aside, we were very glad to have visited here, would look forward to trying their Farmlands White, and recommend this as winery destination for others. THE OWNER: After reading something about the owner, take a look at his bio on his web site for both his background including time in the Norwegian Army Corps, then a stint with the UN patrolling the Israeli - Lebanese border and his continued education to obtain an MBA in the US, you feel as if you're rooting for this owner to also succeed in Oregon winemaking. And for the romantic in us, his bio is also an homage to his wife, who I understand is an immigration attorney, and that makes this a family business one wants to see succeed too. Last, for those of us with Scandinavian heritage (and there are lots of us in the NW for whom the case), it is fun to see a Norwegian run winery. Although, it may not have been the best form for me to mention that my paternal grandmother was of 100% Swedish descent given the winery had recently held an event to celebrate Norway's annual celebration of their independence from Sweden. :-) Seriously, this is worth a stop. The winery is right next door to the tasting room and you'll develop an appreciation for just what hard work is the business of farming grapes and making wine for quality focused boutique wineries like this one. TIPS: 1) Accessibility: Level in tasting room and tasting patio. One spot of marked van accessible parking outside. Making this as good a stop for winos with mobility issues as all others. Cool!. 2) Ask at the winery about a biodynamic winemaking class being held on August 25th that will also include tasting of library wines. Fun! read more

Highly recommend this winery! The wines are excellent in taste. A large variety to choose from. Our host was awesome in knowledge and fun to talk with, Brian I believe was his name. The view even in March as beautiful. I love how they do not use pesticides and work with the nature and the cycle of life. Sheep and chickens rome free in the land they take part in that process. We plan to return this summer when everything is in full running and in full bloom! read more

What's not to like about this place? Sweeping views, a diverse selection of exciting wine, and some of the best pizza I've ever tasted all combine for an unforgettable experience. I've helped kill about 5 bottles of the Disco Chicken Rosé now and I plan to come back for more every chance I get. read more

A true gem and worth the drive. The best part about Johan is the outdoor seating area with the beautiful view. My wife and I enjoyed over an hour of views and singing birds under the shade from tall oaks surrounding the tasting room. The pours were generous, the host was friendly and knowledgeable. For the price, these Pinot Noirs are some of the best I have had in the region. The view is stunning, the wine is outstanding, the value is incredible, and the owner is priceless. I found his authenticity, sincerity and humility inspiring. If you love smaller wineries, down-to-Earth winery owners, spectacular views, etc., you will love it. It is definitely worth the drive. Johan's wines are grade A quality, but shared generously at affordable prices. Morgan raved about the owner after he left. If you're lucky enough to have Tim chat with you about the vineyard (and the willamette valley in general)'s history, you're in for a treat. The natural wines are inspiring. Best we've experienced on our trip. The outdoor patio is just beautiful, and the experience you'll have here is nothing short of sublime. You must go. We came early in the day and had the patio to ourselves for a bit, which can sometimes be a little awkward. Not the case here, it was peaceful and engaging, and I can't recommend enough. read more

He happens to also make and bottle the wine so his knowledge and information for us was helpful and very much appreciated! We loved hearing about how the wines were made and how some were blended. Off of Highway 99, at the entrance to Left Coast Vineyards. Johan did not appear to have any permanent signage but did have portable signs along the long winding route to the property. There's a small tasting room and an outdoor patio with a lovely view looking down to a pond and vineyards. Dogs are welcome in the tasting room and on the patio. We had a "2 free tastings" coupon, but unfortunately it didn't help us when we chose to get wines by the glass. The wine by the glass pours were not that generous, especially for the price paid (about $9 each.) read more

I've visited Johan three times now and have enjoyed each visit! Stacy is a great host, with knowledge of the winery and an ability to hold up an engaging conversation. I love that Johan is Biodynamic certified, always has a farm cat and produces grapes and wines uncommon to this area. read more
