I have read some of the low reviews, but can only tell you our experience. First, obviously a lot of regulars, everyone seemed to know whoever entered. Easily found a table. Quickly got service and our drinks. Our appetizer, onion petals, were tasty and there were plenty of them. Our entrees came quickly too. Server checked on us often. Enjoyed our experience and look forward to trying other menu items. read more

I went here with my friends for a girls night on Saturday October 25, 2025. As we were getting our ID's checked by the "bouncer" (which i dont know what credentials this guy had) he took my REAL ID.. I am turning 22, and my ID is now taken from me which I am not sure that is even legal?? Heads up they don't give a fuck if you try to tell them if your ID is real or not. As much as I love this bar, the DJ on Thursdays ruined it for me. He doesn't play a single song that anyone cares about. You put in a request for your friends 21st birthday, he doesn't care, he already has the most trash EDM music queued up. He is evil and he's never going to stop. I asked him how much the bar was paying him to be here and I told him that I would double it for him to leave and he turned me down. Him turning me down was a bigger upset than the Detroit lions one game away from the Super Bowl last year. Everyone would be a lot happier here without him. First of all I love this place. I have typically been a big fan of going here. Everything was great until it wasn't. On staff you have one of the rudest employees I have ever encountered. He was trying to kick everyone out at 1:30am and did so in a very aggressive way. He took everyone's half full drinks and emptied them and shouted aimlessly at everyone. Everyone was having a great night and he completely ruined the night for everyone. There were multiple vompany Christmas parties happening and he was completely rude to them. I have seriously never seen a staff member ruder than this guy and I still feel very very bothered and hurt by this experience. everyone there was in disbelief by the way he was treating customers who were notjing but respectful the whole night. Avoid this racist eatablishment!!!! I faced discrimination on 5/30. If you are a person of color or an advocate for Black Lives Matter, PLEASE beware!! Racist establishment with very poor service. I asked to place an order of fries. They told me the kitchen was closed. No big deal. Then, 20 to 40 minutes LATER, they bring out a plate of tater tots to a white woman. When I confronted them, they said it was slow and meant NO malice. They tried to tell me that I should have asked the manager when the bartender told me no. They then tried to offer me to buy something and harassed me instead of being apologetic. I bought three drinks, mind you. When the European American friends I was stated the actions from the bartenders appeared racist from the insincere apology. The drinks are cheap but subpar. Very traumatic experience I was forced to endure as a woman of color. I had to wait a long time for my drinks, and again, they refused to service me but provided privileged service to a white woman after they told me no. At least be consistent and be genuine if you try to correct an issue. They tried claiming it looks worse than what it is. They didn't offer free French fries or next round a free drink or anything. Honestly, the only reason they attempted to apologize after I told them I would be leaving a negative review of discrimination! They didn't care to apologize at first when I called them out on their disgusting racist behavior until I threatened that poor review. Then the manager decided he would apologize but again didn't take any real action. If it was truly a mistake, he could have expressed his deepest regrets but didn't. Instead, they offered to turn back on he fryer if I wanted French fries that badly but I would have to pay for them. I didn't care about French fries. I didn't care that the kitchen closed or the price of the food. I care about the prejudice and discrimination that has traumatically impacted me from YOUR wrongful actions. Joey's Tavern, you should be ashamed of your discrimatory behavior that you inflicted on me. It's 2024! Treat people with equality and kindness. read more

Great little bar. Decent drink prices. Interesting group of regulars. Mini burgers are the best! Tacos, sloppy Joe minis and other $1 specials. My only complaint is that the staff tends to rotate a lot and some of the bartender/servers are not on the ball. Three weeks in a row they have screwed up my tab. Once charging me double for a drink, once adding a beer to it(I don't drink beer here), and once running two separate tabs. After a few drinks, you might not notice the discrepancies. I don't think it's intentional, but keep your eye on it. UPDATE 11-20-2010 Kiss the $1 specials goodbye. Mini burgers jumped to $2 each as did tacos. What was a bargain is now a rip off. .75 to add anything to your mini's also. They also reduced the prizes in Trivia. I don't know who is running this place but they are not making many friends. Almost always a good time here. The bars set up is ideal for the size. Well lit, and great acoustics. The service is usually spot on, and the drinks are worth it. Average prices for the "West Side", without feeling like you are in a questionable area. Parking is scarce, but you can park at other local establishments. I have been a loyal customer for some time, and I will say that it is a much better bar than its competition across the street. A chilly night brought myself and my two friends upon this small bar located on the west side of Grand Rapids. We arrived around 10 and sat the bar ordering PBR, Bud Light, and Oberon. The bartenders were very polite and catered to our every need. It was a Thursday night, meaning we were in for some karaoke. DJ Thighpads was extremely inappropriate and crude- yet he was a true crowd pleaser. My friends and I sang two songs which the crowd loved. KC and the Sunshine band and R. Kelly songs that we sang rang through the front all the way to the pool tables in the back where our college peers were enjoying their own time. We ended up moving to a table about an hour into our time there where we met some more friends who were definitely interesting. The boyfriend of one of the girls was rolling, which to our surprise was very chill. Behind us there we met Greg, a 37 year old man who bought my roommate and I a beer each. A very low key, relaxed guy, he seemed nice and well put together. We stayed until about 1:30 in the morning, but overall had a good time. I will be back at Joeys soon enough. 3/5. read more

We just moved near Joey's and were looking for a place we could make our regular hang out. We even checked yelp for reviews and it sounded great...and maybe it is if your already a regular. We walked in and found a seat and then waited for over 30 minutes for service. I finally walked over to the bar where two servers and a bartender (all of which looked in our direction several times and we tried to wave over) were talking. I asked if we could get someone to take our order and get a menu. The bar tender handed me a menu but said nothing. I walked back to our seats and we waited another 15 minutes. Finally we had enough and started to leave. That's when a waiter finally came over and asked if we needed anything. We said we were leaving in which she responded that if we were in that big of a hurry then we should have went to the bar and ordered. Young staff that was more interested in watching TV and talking to each other and a handful of others than potential new customers. We drive by it daily now with zero plans to ever return. read more
