Experience here has been horrible. The principal never replies to emails or calls. I got a call from her one day for a truancy warning. I asked her for help with resources for before/after school care, since we had a few tardies. She asked us why we moved to this side of town if we cannot afford a nanny. She offered to buy us an alarm clock to help us get to school on time. That was her only source of help or solution she brought up. She also said we could reach out to our neighbors for help if we needed it..? I asked to sit in my daughters class as I am concerned with how her teacher says she's 'concerned for her education' and that my daughter does not listen but then cannot provide actual examples. She does not have these issues at home. It's been 3 months of me asking and they have NOT ALLOWED ME TO SIT IN even though I have filled all prerequisites and have previously volunteered in the class. The teacher also mentions how there is a lot of homework missing, even though the work she refers to is 'optional' homework. Why is this counting against my daughters grade? Also, one week we did not get homework, I asked for a homework packet from the teacher. Instead of just sending a packet home, she ignored my messages, took the time out to write out a paragraph in her parent newsletter about what to do when homework is missing.. blamed us for losing the first one and said we could print one out online if we needed it. After 2 emails and 3 days, she finally sent one home. All that effort for us to do word search and reading log homework..instead of just providing the work in the first place. My daughter is only in 1st grade and this is her first year here. We plan on looking at other schools. Do not let your kid go here..their butt in a chair is just a paycheck. The staff have shown they do not care and will not help you if you aren't wealthy and donating money to the school. They're a bit clique and all very stuck up. I have received NO help, NO apologies for their behavior and attitude toward us.. they do not care about the families who's kids they work with every day. The staff here are great. I get updated all the time as needed. The playgrounds are great. And the class sizes are relatively small. And my child is excited to go everyday which says volumes read more

DO NOT SUB HERE. I have never worked with teachers that have such contempt for subs as at Henderson. While in the lounge there was a group of teachers complaining loudly about the after-school personnel saying, "they're just glorified subs." Later on, because subs only get the key to the classroom and not to the hall doors to get in the building, I needed be let inside. I tried tapping on the window but one of those teachers in the lounge saw me and turned the other way! She knew I was a sub because she had seen me all day. Luckily, another much nicer teacher came after and let me inside. If you're a sub, get your jobs from Farmar or Robert Semple or any of the elementary schools at MDUSD. Avoid the negativity at Henderson. We already deal with enough trying to get the kids in line. I don't also want to deal with click-y teachers. read more

As a teacher at an elementary school for 18 years and also having my two kids in an elementary school I feel obligated to write my opinion. Joe Henderson is corroded. Yes that is strong word but let me explain. Never have I seen the unprofessional clicks of disenchanted educators as I have seen at Henderson. As a volunteer I rarely get a smile or even a thank you from staff. They seem to be blindly and methodically going about their day. The principle rarely leaves her desk. I see no interaction between her and her students. I would be shocked if she knew 5% of the kids names. I also over heard talking about when teachers leave after school. As if they should all stay well after their contracted hours. I could go on and on but long reviews do not get read. I'm just thankful my kids do not attend. John O read more

I really like this school. It has a nice layout and, so far, all of the teachers I've encountered are very nice and great with the kids! I also really like that the Parent Teacher Group is so active, they really do a lot for the school and it shows! read more

My child was tormented by Ms. Rosenthal. She has 0 compassion. I would never recommend her for a teacher. I wish the superintendent would realize what is going on and take action. She is a bully, and she thrives on intimidating her students. She name calls her students, and my child was afraid to be a part of her classroom. My child was not supported or cared for. She was unfair, unkind and unwilling to help. Hopefully now that the former principal, Carin Garton, has been ousted the school can get back on track. I personally witnessed a first grade teacher, Miss Campbell, use physical force against a student. The front office staff (Ms. Osborne) is incredibly abrasive and rude. Great school, all five of my kids have gone there spanning 10 years. Teachers and administrators were great. Good parent participation also. I went there with my grandson a few days ago( 23 june 2015) and found the playground locked up. For years my kids and grandkids have gone there to play basket ball, baseball , soccer, fly model gliders. What happened? It is a shame to lock off a large playground area when our kid are turning into couch potatoes. The park is often crowded and being use by little league and soccer. Oh well. read more
