One Sunday afternoon my husband and I found ourselves wandering around DTSF -- which, for non-locals, is the commonly used shorthand for Downtown Sioux Falls -- looking for a good burger place. And somehow we stumbled right into JL Beers. Or perhaps more accurately, the scent of burgers guided us there like a pair of hungry travelers following a greasy North Star. Either way, what a fantastic little find this turned out to be. The burgers were juicy, flavorful, and properly satisfying in the way a good burger should be. Not overcomplicated. Not trying too hard. Just well-prepared comfort food done right. The fries were excellent too -- crisp, well-seasoned, and dangerously easy to keep eating long after I was already full. The service also impressed me quite a bit. Even on a busy Sunday afternoon, the staff remained attentive, friendly, and efficient without making us feel rushed. One unexpectedly fun part of the visit was trying non-alcoholic beer options for the first time. My husband and I are not really drinkers, so this was a little adventure for us. The sparkling hop water was surprisingly refreshing and delightful, while the Athletic non-alcoholic beer leaned a little more bitter than my personal preference. Still, I appreciated finally getting to try some of the newer NA options people have been talking about lately. And honestly, this place wound up becoming one of our gateway restaurants into exploring more of DTSF afterward. We have returned several times since, usually combining it with walks around downtown and trying other local spots nearby. Now, of course, every local already knows the true final boss battle of downtown Sioux Falls: Parking. At some point you simply accept that you are either going to circle the block repeatedly like a confused migrating bird or surrender gracefully and use one of the nearby parking garages. Which honestly is not the end of the world. The walk is good for us. At least until winter arrives and the sidewalks become an Olympic slipping event sponsored by snow, ice, and regret. read more

I was in FSD on a work trip and happened upon JL Beers while out walking around the city. I'm not a beer drinker, but decided to try lunch. I'm very glad I did. In the mood for a juicy burger and a beer, JL was the ideal spot to visit for this. Upon entry, staff was friendly and took our order right away. Ambience was laid back and casual. My friend and I ordered our burgers, JL and Cajun, plus a side of fries that had jalapeno cheddar flavor. There was also a green beer on tap that my friend ordered, he mentioned it was fruity and good. I had a blonde beer. All delicious, we left satisfied with our meals and service. Both Sioux Falls locations are good, but the downtown spot beats the other in service, ambience, and space. The food is excellent at both. We have been multiple time to both locations. The fries: excellent with many seasoning options. I prefer the parm garlic. They don't make the ranch in-house, but it is made specifically for them, and is so good. Every burger I've had there is really good. This one was the bacon jam burger, which is my new favorite. The beer is a blueberry cobbler sour, which was AMAZING. I only regret I forgot to grab a couple crowlers on our way out. read more

JL Beers was so delicious! It was recommended to me by a long time local! Small divey place nothing fancy about it but with about 30 beers on tap and cooked to order burgers and fries! Chicken sandwiches are also available. I got a burger with cheese, onions, and special sauce, a big order of sea salt fries (choose your seasoning) and 2 craft beers for $24!! The bar has about 20 seats and there's several tables for table service. Not great for a big party, but perfect for a quick, but hot delicious lunch or dinner! The bartenders were attentive and kind and I will definitely be back! I'm sad I didn't get to try the root beer float with on tap root beer for less than $5! I'll just have to go back! read more

I love this place. Food is always delicious. One of the few places we crave in Sioux Falls. Service is quick aswell.

The staff was friendly and that wasn't the problem, I almost feel bad leaving this review because the lady cooking looked like she was working her butt off, but my burger was horrible. I got the JL burger, the patty had no seasoning, was dry and extremely thin. The "special sauce" literally tasted like ketchup and mayo mixed so that was disappointing. I am from Missoula MT where the burgers are spectacular so I was excited to try something from the city I just moved to and if this place has a high rating for Sioux Falls I'm worried they will all be disappointing. read more

We knew they had a great rep for their burgers, so we decided to split the "Wam Bam Bacon Jam Burger". Wow. Wow. Wow. I wish I was hungry enough to eat my own. All of the menu items are delicious! I haven't tasted everything - but I went back a second time during my visit to SD. I don't eat bacon - and they were able to accommodate / make slight changes to menu descriptions to meet my dining needs. They have an epic beer selection and the root beer is great too if you're not in the mood for something boozy. The place is clean and well kept. A bit dark inside but if you sit at the bar during the daytime you can catch some afternoon light to illuminate your menu. Try the Nutter Burger with their Ghost Pepper Sauce (found on their Cheddar-Jalepeno burger)!! Hands down one of the tastiest and spiciest burgers but ohhhh soooooo gooooood! Bar tenders and servers are awesome and friendly. Tip well if you can! Burgers are grilled to perfection (based on your preferences)! My husband and I are staying in Sioux Falls over the summer and while I had been here before and didn't love it, we thought we would try it again. This time I would say the burgers were much better than last time I tried it over two years ago. I would also note that my husband and I consider ourselves (probably like a lot of people) burger connoisseurs. My husband had the blue cheese and bacon burger (which is the one I tried last time and didn't like) and he thoroughly enjoyed it. I had the JL burger which was delicious (double patty with grilled onions) and we had some beers and fries to go with the burger. Two critiques: to call your burgers truly the best I think the buns have to be really good, and I would say the buns were just average; and the service was a bit slow but to be fair our waitress was nice just a little overwhelmed as she seemed to be the only one. But the total package of flavors was delicious, and I would say for being able to sit in a restaurant and be served at a table at this price point makes it worth it. (As a note, I think Culver's is probably the best burger in Sioux Falls, but obviously sometimes you don't want a fast food experience.) Definitely try JL Beers if you're in Sioux Falls or any other place they have a restaurant. read more

We went there on a very busy Friday night and thought we wouldn't get in. The guy at the door was so calm and friendly. He put our name on his list and said come back in 10 minutes. When we got back, he told us a table was cashing out and we would be seated ASAP .... we were seated faster than that. He really kept things upbeat and I appreciated his positive attitude. You scan a QR code for the list of tap beers. It is a long list! We each had a couple of beers that were new to us. The bartenders, waitstaff and everyone there made it a relaxed and fun evening...which, given how crazy it was the night before a big parade, was amazing. Food ... the burger was excellent. We had a family simple burger and it was just simply tasty. The hand cut fries were fresh and delicious. You could have them seasoned or gussied up all sorts of ways. We just had them with sea salt and ordered some beer cheese for dipping. We also got some of their house made peanut butter. I tried both the beer cheese and the peanut butter on the burger. And, you know what? They were both good! The coleslaw is made fresh for each order and was tasty (I am fussy about coleslaw and don't like it sweet. This was a tangy version that worked well with beer and burgers.) The soft pretzels come out screaming hot, nicely salty and are incredible with the beer cheese. After trying to go to a couple of places that were either closed or no longer serving food, we were pointed to JL Beers. We arrived with just a couple of minutes to spare before the grill closed, but they assured us that we could order without issue nor even an eye roll or an exasperated gasp. Came for the fresh cut fries because M has a real thing about them. We were actually still full from our lunch much earlier in the day (that chislic sticks to your ribs!) so we weren't really in the mood for food. So, we split a classic hamburger, coleslaw and fries, of course!! Oh. My. One of the best burgers I've had for a very long time. Perfectly cooked and the bun was excellent. Not too much bread. Excellent food (my go tos are the Humpty Dumpty and jalapeño chips-can't recommend enough!) and even better staff. Everyone is friendly, knowledgeable, and goes above and beyond. My poor dad spilled a beer and one of the kitchen staff ran out to help us clean it up while the server got him a fresh one. Dad was so embarrassed and they were beyond gracious. Every time we've been in, we've had consistently great food and the atmosphere/staff are always great. I wish I lived closer so I could go more than the 3-4x a year I'm able to. read more
