    Gnudi

This was my first dinner in QC. It set the stage for great meals to come. The place is hard to find it's like a secret door. I lucked up and was able to get a seat at the bar. The bartender/server was Sam and he was excellent. We discussed the menu and I settled on the gnudi like pasta and the dried whole sea bass. The flavors in the pasta were unexpected. There was mustard seed, rutabaga, and kale which turned about to be a great combination. Then there was the whole fish which was fantastic. It was fried perfectly on top of a mango cucumber slaw/salad with the addition of chili sauce. I could have been rolled out of the restaurant- I was stuffed. Sam also provided me with suggestions for other Canadian QC places and/or that I should try while visiting. If I lived in QC, I would be a regular at this place.

What a fun speakeasy atmosphere with incredible fresh seafood being the star performer here. Fortunately, the uber driver was familiar with the alley and unmarked doorway to show us the way. Loved the velvet curtains that when held back reveal the cozy interior with half circle booths, counter seats, and more tables in the back section. Reservations are required as it is a smallish place and it is very popular. We visited mid week and it was packed. Creative cocktails are a draw too. We were lucky to score a last minute reservation at the counter which felt like sitting at a very unique drugstore sundae bar. As you can see in the photos, the counter seats allow you to watch the chefs in action. We lost count of the seafood towers that were moving out at rapid speed. Since we were on a progressive dinner with this being our first stop, it was difficult holding back before heading out to Hono Izakaya a short walk away. We started here with oysters of course, watching them being shucked in front of us. Then the blini and smoked salmon- as beautiful to see as yummy to eat. Scallops rounded out the meal. Most dishes are tapas size so it is easy to try various plates. Service was very attentive and friendly. Everyone spoke English. Bon appetit!

3.5 stars. Limited menu that is predominantly a raw bar. Had the grilled octopus. Presentation was lovely. However, the octopus was on the chewy side. I could not cut it w my butter knife. Drink menu is set up nice. Ambience in front of the house is cool and had good vibes. We were seated in the back, which was dreary. Staff was very accommodating.

Hidden entrance in a back alley - look for graffiti and a camera/ buzzer. Reminiscent of a speakeasy/restaurant style - reservation/ no password required !! Enter in through velvet draperies and get ready for an amazing experience. We sat at the bar and absolutely loved watching this efficient crew create culinary masterpieces with precision. Our server was Nicholas - he was intuitive and helpful. Now the food - I recommend the following: Beef Carpaccio / Ceviche / Cavatelli. Enjoy !!!

My favorite place in Quebec City!! Amazing ambience and love the speakeasy feel. Super cool concept of entering from the alley. No signage and you have to ring a doorbell. Food and drinks were amazing! Star was superb. Couldn't ask for a better experience! Will definitely be back and recommend this place to any friends!

Small speak easy kind of restaurant. The seafood and drinks were phenomenal and the staff were very nice. Would recommend the oysters- they were the best I had in Quebec. And so many drink options! Great place for a date.

It was our 1st night in QC and the SO found this interesting place from a google search that was only 1 block from our hotel.  According to their website, they were all booked up for the night so we paid them a visit right when they opened at 530pm to see if they could accommodate a brief dinner. We lucked out as the manager was kind enough to accommodate us for a couple hours.  He proceeded to lead us through some curtains and into what felt like a secret club for those who appreciated creative drinks and meals, a kind of speak-easy atmosphere.  The background music was contemporary and hip. We were enjoying some refreshing cocktails as a couple oyster shooters arrived.  These weren't your typical oyster shooters that were dumped in a shotglass of a basic cocktail, but rather the freshest oysters with a small dollop of Caviar Transmontanus!  I had to look it up and found that the "Transmontanus Caviar is produced from the Acipenser Transmontanus sturgeon, or White Sturgeon...its roe displays a beautiful dark grey color and has marine flavors and hints of fresh walnuts".  After savoring the oysters, we chased it with the accompanying Vodka Chopin!  I had to look that up too and found that "Chopin Potato Vodka is naturally gluten-free and the world's most awarded potato vodka...its uniquely creamy and full-bodied flavor profile makes it a great standalone vodka, ideal for sipping neat or in martinis and cocktails".  Needless to say, it went down smoothly! Next up were a dozen raw oysters, half New Brunswick (no, not New Jersey) and half Prince Edward Island...the best we've ever had! The next appetizer was a small tin of the Kristal caviar accompanied by blinis and aigrelette cream...we didn't need it, but it was our vacation and we were making up for 2 years of cooking and eating delivery at home.  This was a very nice treat! Our 1st main course was the scallops, which were perfectly seared and accompanied by zucchini and fried kombu atop a tasty pool of buttermilk sauce.  One of the best scallop dishes we've ever had! The 2nd main course was a perfectly fried, whole sea bass with cucumber and green mango salad atop chili oil...the fish was delicious and flaky.  Just amazing! We ended the dinner with their cannele, flavored with rum and vanilla accompanied by a sweet wine sorbet.  A very nice touch! Here's the "Inclusion" element of the mission statement from their website translated by google, "The jjacques is a place that wants to be welcoming to everyone, regardless of their religion, color, country of origin, sex and gender identity or sexual orientation."  Jjacques is a classy, hip and socially aware establishment.  Just a great restaurant! Overall, the service and food were exceptional.  They went the extra mile in making and presenting each dish.  Michelin judges, take notice!

Ambiance 5+, Service 5, Food 3, Value 3. Cool place with limited menu and fairly expensive. Fills up fast so make a reservation or get there when they open. Oysters are very small. Worth going once but price makes for low overall value.

Highly highly highly recommended! We didn't have a reservation but they squeezed us in. Excellent service, very attentive and knowledgeable. Cocktails were delicious and the food was top notch.

    Entrance

Service 5 Very attentive but not overly intrusive during our 2.5 hour meal. Food 5 Yes to the mushrooms 5 ways Yes to whatever tataki available (ours was swordfish). Although, the slices were sometimes a little tougher the flavor was amazing! Fresh with just the right amount of spice level. The celery salad accompaniment added a nice texture and flavor. Maybe to the oyster shooter. Not bad but not as memorable as the rest of the meal. Double yes to the fried whole fish! Fried with rice flour - gluten friendly without sacrificing texture or taste. Perfectly salted, a little ginger and with a tangy green mango salad. The gnudi was loved by our table. Like gnocchi but more delicate. Nice lemon flavor. The pickled onion "caviar" was a fun touch. Ambiance 4.5 We unfortunately were seated in the booth/table with a speaker, so it was a little difficult to converse at a normal volume.

Such an amazing, little speakeasy accessible through an alleyway. It's about a 5min walk to my hotel- Hotel Pur. This is definitely a cute, modern, cozy, swank spot with great drinks and service! I didn't order any food. Glad to visit again when next in Quebec.

That means, no basic ingredients like citrus are used. That's basically telling the bartender they cannot make 99% of cocktails in mind and have to take risks to make something tasty happen. That concept in itself is a recipe to create things that will be genuinely and authentically Canadian. In other words, experimentation at its finest. Opened in 2024 by the team behind Quebec City's only 2 Michelin starred restaurant, Taniere, this is now the spot to be for those in the know. So, how is trial and error going of crafting something genuinely Canadian? Cocktails are superb on both taste and presentation. The food is remarkably plated with extremely high quality ingredients. Everything tastes excellent. If that's not enough, the entire interior looks like a very private club and the team of servers and bartenders is superb and welcoming.

I also hadn't had a charcuterie board this trip yet, so splurged on one here. It came with three types of cheese, three types of meats, two types of pickled onions, traditional cucumber pickles, pumpkin seeds, cranberries, an onion puree, a mustard puree, and bread. First off, I appreciated they actually provided the appropriate bread-to-other ratio. I feel like normally you run out of bread while eating a board but I actually had bread leftover with this meal! The cheese and meat were good of course, but I want to make a special call out to the onion puree, which was like condensed French onion soup, and the cucumber pickles, which were some of the best pickles I've had because they tasted so fresh, like they had just been brined. All of this on a deck looking out towards the river. Stop by here after late afternoon cruise with Croisieres ML across the road to continue enjoying the river view! Logistics: - indoor and outdoor seating - limited street parking nearby - several complex mocktail options available. I wanted to try one so bad but I was too full for more!

One lady in lower town took special delight in telling me "sorry, we're all full tonight", while I stood there with numb fingers and a raw red face where hail hit my face moments before. I passed Alphonse many times the last few days but tonight, instead of just passing through, i stopped in to look inside as another customer held open the door waiting for me to enter as he exited. So naturally, I went in. I was afraid they were about to close, but the hostess was welcoming and with a warm smile, showed us to our seats. The food was so good! We ordered the French Onion soup. My kids loved that the bread in the soup was still crunchy and not soggy. The baked Brie was a delicious start of what is to come next. My entree was the low temperature salmon. It was the chef's special (they call it inspiration of the chef). It was a salmon dish that is lukewarm. The salmon was so tender, it melted like butter in my mouth. It was a decent portion too. We got dessert to share- crème brûlée- also good! Ambience is smart casual.

Nothing will come close to comparing! We heard good things about the hot chocolate here and wanted to check it out for ourselves after being out in the cold all day. We chose the spiced hot chocolate, as recommended by our server. It was absolutely delicious-- rich, flavorful, creamy, and everything that a hot chocolate should be. Although the price was a bit steep, we had enough for 4 small cups and it came with two scones and whipped cream on the side. We also got two "biscuits", which we thought were going to literal biscuits, but ended up being small pastries which were both tasty! We were lucky enough to snag the seats right next to the fireplace which ended up being the perfect way to spend an hour hanging out. We ended up coming back for a light dinner the same day and also really enjoyed our time. There was a live pianist performing which really elevated the dining experience. We started things off with some oysters, which honestly were some of the best I've had in a very long time. The dipping sauce was a bit strange and untraditional for me, but it was perfect with just a bit of lemon juice. We also got a burger to share, and when they accidentally brought out a side salad instead of the fries we requested, they let us keep the salad and brought a huge entire order of truffle fries for us (!!!) Canadians really have some of the best fries too because these were perfectly crispy and honestly didn't even need dipping sauce. The burger also didn't disappoint and was savory goodness. I wish we tried this place sooner! Would highly recommend, even if you're not staying at the hotel itself.
