How can you give Jing 5 a 4?

If you want to get up to some hi-jinks, come here... then you can get up to hi-jings. And when you need a break, don't take 5... jing 5! They specialize in the food of the Wuhan province which of course has been made famous recently. They do a great job of it and it's very popular with those that know about it. I find it to be pretty delicious and will probably come back here in future.

This place is small and a bit dingy looking but the meat is pretty good! The duck necks were very flavorful and I loved their 藕夹 (lotus root with pork) and 豆皮 (sticky rice thing). The lotus and sticky rice items were a pleasant surprise since so few places sell them. The lotus root is greatly improved by either air frying, baking, or pan frying at home; they taste great but the breading is a bit flabby and not crisp. We also got fish which was good. Noodles are mediocre. The main draw is definitely the meats and snacks. There's dine in but we got takeout.

History is on the wall outside of restaurant. Translation is coming soon.

Don't say I didn't warn y'all. These duck wings are extremely addictive. I'm here every weekend to refill my fix on the exciting flavors. Ever since I got attracted by malatang at the new Yummy Kitchen and Mala Sichuan, I became a fan of this tingling sensation - numbing spiciness 麻辣 on my lips. I would like to name Metropole Center as Houston Spicy Central. It was funny how I discovered Jing 5. Few weeks ago, I was gonna just stop by to check out the prices at Healing Foot next door. Then, I saw the new decor at where Tea Dot Cafe used to be. I walked in. Wow, that unique aroma stopped me from leaving. They were cooking braised duck parts, 滷鴨翅 (duck wings) to be precise. I sat and chatted with the operator/manager, Mr. Wang, who created Jingwu Ducks in Hubei (a province in central China, north of Hunan). The unique flavor made it so popular and it expanded to 200+ restaurants in China. Wang's family decided to explore overseas and they landed in Houston. I applauded their successful adventure as I read the story on the wall. (See the translation at http://iyelpalot.blogspot.com/2016/07/jing-5-translated.html). Besides braised poultry, they brought beef noodles with them from Hubei. There are 2 types: regular noodles and gluten-free rice noodles in their famous soup base. One thing thing different to the traditional Jingwu store is boba tea. They bought formulas from a bubble tea source in Taiwan. That's a cool way to chill the numbing lips from the spiciness of duck wings. Then, there is a story about the name. Jingwu Jie 精武街 is the street name of its first store. They transformed Wu as phonetic of five in Chinese. It became Jing5. Very clever, huh? So, don't ask them where is the 1, 2, 3, 4. Cuz, there's none. If you are curious about the mural, here is a translation for your convenience (instead of using Google Translator app) - http://iyelpalot.blogspot.com/2016/07/jing-5-translated.html.

My wife and I shared a spicy beef noodle soup and diced pork over rice with vegetables and soy sauce egg. Both were very good and were perfect for the cold, wet day. The lady who served us was really nice as well

Beef noodle soup (spicy), soooo good!

Being a houston native, I haven't see a place like jing 5 (精武鴨脖) in Chinatown and I'm stoked! This place is famous for their braised meats and veggies (滷味) of all kinds. The owners have a secret recipe from the original store in Wuhan, China so the taste is authentic and ridiculously good! If you don't know what that is, it's great for snacking while drinking, ktv, or watching a movie/game with friends. They also have legit beef noodle soup that's only $6.95 and authentic dry noodles (正宗熱乾麵) for $4.95. If you like spicy, make sure to tell them. I personally loved the noodles and braised lotus roots, duck tongue, duck neck, peanuts, and tofu. Highly recommended, a lot of people come in and do take out so they are actually sold out quite often. Might want to call ahead if you want something in particular!

    Duck neck and wings... spicy!

Duck wings and duck necks were on the menu at this place for a starter for a Chinatown food crawl. The flavors where amazing, this really neat herbal spice that makes your lips numb. The necks were spicier than the wings, but also harder to eat. While I really enjoyed the flavors, the work involved in eating around the bones was meh. Great place to give a try, from what I understand its the closest thing to real Chinese fast food you can get in town.

Disgusting hair on the pig feet, i been coming to this place about about a year now, this is the first time for me to purchasing the pig feet, I did ask to make sure there is no hair and they told me no way, so I trusted them, and this is what happened when I got home first thing I open there is a lot of hair . Not happy at all.

Great new place to find 精武鴨脖, I heard of this place from a friend and really love the food here. The tofu, seaweed, lotus root are great, very authentic. I took some to Dallas and friends have been asking for more lol. Will keep coming back!

Lack of key ingredients for wuhan dry hot noodles. Disappointed. Tastes plain. Very small portion for $5.

Cafe 101 serve Japanese and Chinese food. There are table and booths inside as well as a full bar. We started with a couple of sushi specials... bluefin toro and Uni. Thought the bluefin toro were fresh as well as the Uni. Wasn't expecting so was pleasantly surprised. For our mains, we ordered the twice cooked pork and beef galbi. Both came as a set... with rice, side dish of pickled radish and carrots and dessert. Price-wise, it was reasonable considering it came as a set. Twice cooked pork hits the spot. It was plenty and had some to go. Galbi was decent... it's not like Korean Galbi. It was pretty saucy, sweet and tender. It was decent portion as well. Think we found our new late night spot! The lounge like ambiance, along with their diner-like menu, is a major selling point for folks and has been one of the reasons for their popularity over the better part of the last two decades. It is a bit trendy and plays music that you would think of and in a Miami lounge or a pretentious New York Club. While service is not their strong suit, the clean bathrooms, spacious seating, and semi-open kitchen makes up for some 'tudes from the staff. The menu is most definitely Asian, but blends from a predominantly Chinese menu and featuring various Taiwanese, Korean, Japanese items. The latter includes sushi, which is likely one of the only spots in the neighborhood that still has it after midnight. They have bluefin tuna and sea urchin, in which Cafe 101 is one of the only late night spots to offer it. Their beef chow fun is nice and greasy, but filled with excessive onions, bean sprouts, and various other veggies that almost take away from the noodles and beef (which was nicely cooked). Their shrimp and egg came in a nice set, which was a good surprise and surprisingly well executed. This is also a spot for Japanese curry, and even though it's not the best, it most certainly does the job. Taiwanese popcorn chicken is on point, cumin lamb is unsurprisingly spicy, and Singapore chow mai fun has a tinge of solid wok hei. (#1) I'm genuinely not a fan of their soups and think the sushi rolls are not their best work. While they also have milk, tea options, unless one is desperate, I would also steer clear of. Parking in the early evening can be an issue at Don Huang Plaza, but after 11pm, the parking options should be abundant. I would consider coming here in a larger group, especially with late night owls. ___________ (#1) Wok's essence (鑊氣)

Would LOVE to take my cousins here one day…read more Environment/Atmosphere - Super crowded when we got here, but the lines moved fast, and there was a kiosk to self-order if you didn't want to wait in line for the cashier. One of my favorite things was how fragrant the space smelled while I waited for my boba. You could tell there was an exceptional tea aroma lingering despite all the cream and sweetness. The place was exceptionally clean for being so busy, and the workers consistently cleaned as they made the drinks, so you knew you could trust the sanitation here. Drink Design - I have to make a separate comment on how CUTE these drinks were. I loved the intentional sticker placement over the lips and the little carrying handle. You could tell they went the extra mile to make these drinks not just flavorful, but an experience in and of themselves. Even their receipt paper felt luxurious. That sounds ridiculous to point out, but the thought behind every aspect of this place is impeccable. High Mountain Pouchong Tea w. Lemon Juice & Mousse (Creamy Lemon Tart) - After all the sugar I had today, this lemony drink hit the spot with its perfect tartness. The cream had bits of lemon zest in it, adding to the aroma. I tried to adjust the sweetness when I ordered and was told it had a built-in sweetness, but if I found it too sweet, they would happily switch it out for another drink. I felt like I was dealing with Amazon's generous return policy--and luckily, the drink was perfect, so no return was needed! Creamy Mango Tart - Literally like the Lemon Tart, but mango. I loved this just as much and really enjoyed the refreshing flavors of BOTH tarts. Instantly a fan favorite. Dong Ding Oolong Tea w. Fresh Milk - Very mild and creamy, almost like a mellow latte. Not my favorite because it was a bit too creamy after everything else I had today. Still, I loved the tea profile and can absolutely see why others would love it. Overall, I love, love, LOVE this place. 1000/10. From the experience to the quality and intentionality behind every little detail, I couldn't be happier with my visit. I never thought I'd ever say that a drink was so Instagram-worthy, but these drinks were beautiful--like models of the boba world. Would go back in a heartbeat. This has officially won the spot for my favorite boba place.

I tried the Biscoff Tiramisu-- while they could work on their presentation (the filling looked messy and slapped on), the taste was quite nice! Sweet, creamy, and the mascarpone filling was light and not too heavy despite being sweet and indulgent. I'm excited to try the other tiramisu varieties :D I like how the tiramisu comes in its own container instead of scooped into a takeout box because it's a lot less messy + prettier when eating it. Service was really friendly and there is self-serve water available too. Lots of tables for two but they were all taken during my visit.
