It took far too long for me to finally out pen to paper (figuratively speaking) and provide a review for Jim's Barber shop. I found this little gem as the world Behan to emerge from the pandemic and I needed to move on from the home haircuts from my wife. Now, she did an amazing job and I was more than willing to continue with that routine, but she felt otherwise and sent me in search of a new barber. Based on Yelp reviews I gave Jim's a try. And am I glad I did. Staffed only by Jim, this little shop is only available by appointment - easily obtained online. It's never crowded and Covid precautions are still observed to this day. Jim is friendly and talented. I've been so impressed that we brought our teenager here for his haircuts as well. Now, fighting a teenage boy for haircuts is a challenge for anyone, but each and every time he emerges from Jim's the styling looks....styling Do remember that the establishment is "cash only" - but it's definitely a reasonable cost, even with a gratuity. My very picky teenager and 20-something each made appointments for a haircut. First off, the reservation process was online, easy and efficient. The shop allows only the person getting their haircut and a waiting family member in the shop at a time. We felt comfortable from the start as it is the CLEANEST shop we have been to with masked-up owner and plenty of sanitizer. Both boys explained what they wanted and the owner went right to work! When I arrived in Bethesda around 2011, I tried a few different places to get my hair cut (affordably - NIH internships don't pay too well). I ended up settling on Jim's at $16 each visit. There was almost always a short wait and two barbers. Over the last year or so, I've noticed it was down to just one barber, and there never seemed to be any waiting anymore. My haircut is a fairly simple one, but nonetheless, I've noticed that the quality of the cuts as Jim's has fallen. Sometimes the cut would be perfect, but more often than not I'd have some uneven areas, or I didn't feel like I was getting what I was asking for. There were 2-3 times in a row where I felt like I was getting the "Macklemore Treatment" where the sides are cut, but the top was hardly trimmed. I usually would mention it after the cut and we'd go shorter, but it was always very time consuming. I never said anything during the cut because they always cut your hair with you facing away from the mirror there, looking out the window, then spin you around to see the finished product at the end. It got to a point where my fiancee would insist on coming with me to look at it (since she can see a lot better than I can) before paying. Lastly, and this is the thing that made me finally write the review, the buzzer that they use has a bent tooth on it. I swear I've mentioned it the last 4 times I went, but nothing's been done about it. It's not noticeable when a length clip is attached, but when the barber would go to clean up my neckline, it'd scrape the hell out of me. There would be a very visible bright red welt line wherever that one tooth would scrape over. Each time I mentioned it, it was brushed off as a non-issue. The last time I was told "some people have sensitive skin". Funny how my skin isn't sensitive at any other place.. Also, last time (which happened to be the worst) he splashed some aftershave on the scrapes. It burned, and if shaving has taught me anything, the more you cut, the more aftershave burns. Jim's, do yourself a favor and replace that clipper. While Jim's is fine for a $16 cut, they aren't reliable enough for any important events, especially not a wedding. I don't want to advocate any other barbers on a review for this establishment, but I finally went exploring and tried a new place today that happened to be a much more pleasant experience. Moving here makes you realize how expensive the area is -- the food, rent, basic good, etc. So with that in mind, a $17 mens haircut isn't really that bad. My experience with Jim's Barbershop was less than ideal, however. The wait wasn't long, but Jim (the owner) was the only barber at the time of my visit. He was nice, sat me down, asked me what I wanted and got to work. First thing I noticed was that Jim isn't really sure as to what the person is looking for. I asked for a simple taper on the sides and a few inches off the top. He had no idea what a taper was but in the end somehow pulled off what I would think is a great taper. Secondly, and another reviewer commented on this, but I felt as though the sides were done beautifully -- he look his time, showed me a few times, and asked for my input, but when he got to the top it was maybe a 5 minute half assed ordeal (I think the other review called it the "Macklemore Treatment"). Instead of taking a few inches off, he used thinning shears (the ones with teeth), which really only took away volume not length... so now I just have less hair on top but at the same length (???). And lastly, the real reason I decided to write a review was because at the end of the cut when I went up to pay, Jim had the audacity to ask for a larger top after giving him a 15%+ tip. I get it, live is hard, but at no point should you ASK for a bigger tip seeing that it is the customer's right to even give you a tip in the first place! As an NIH Fellow I'm sure I make less than him per year, and so I really wasn't in a position of giving a massive tip anyways. 2/10 would not recommend. read more

I've been once here once and will be coming back. I'm new to the area and this is the first place I've had my haircut. Things to note: 1. I had a very short wait which wasn't bad. I've been to barbershops where I was consistently waiting an hour. 2. Jim was very friendly and he made you feel at home. 3. I asked for more of a trim but had much more taken off than expected (reason for my 3 star review). 4. This is a very affordable haircut. After more than a year in DC, I may have finally found a place to get my hair cut. I tried expensive hipster barber shops, a chain of men's "grooming centers," and another old-school salon, but nothing seemed to work. Either I pay $45 and tip for a decent cut (but forced to wait hours due to a "no appointment" policy) or $25 for an uneven cut at what seemed like a factory of stylists more interested in speaking with each other than seeing what works for me. Today, I made an appointment at one of those chains - only to find out the stylist wasn't even there! So rather than pay top dollar for a cut from someone I hadn't done any due diligence on (hey, it's the era of Yelp), I did a quick search and found Jim's nearby. The shop was immaculate, and Jimmy was ready to go the moment I walked in. He did a fantastic job on what's a rather simple clipper and cut. He was tremendously friendly and kind. And most importantly, I was happy with the finished product. I don't need aromatherapy or fancy product. Most importantly, it was only $16! Since I budgeted for more, I gave him a well-deserved tip -- and I'll definitely be back. read more

Place is good Price is good $16( with first time user coupon-$2) But Jim ( the owner the only guy who cut hair) is not that up to the mark as barber. He fails to understand what customer wants. I repetitively told him to keep the height of hairs on rear of head to be small but even after few tries it was not satisfactory Also the level was uneven in some of the areas, he did not try to match the front ends as well. I was a bit skeptical at first when I entered the shop to get a haircut. I went to a lot of different barber shops from College Park to Rockville to all the way in Virginia but no place got it exactly the way I wanted it to be. I've been going to this barber almost 10 years on the recommendation of Richard L. They're awesome, fast, friendly, and do the job real well. The price is pretty great too $15 (not including tip). A big plus from going there for so long is that they know how i want my hair cut (even tho i have considerably less of it after 10 years). Pro-tip. Clean, quiet barber shop that is a great value in the Bethesda area. Very easy to find and walk-ins are welcome. I did not have any appointment on a Saturday afternoon and it took just about 15 minutes of waiting to get started. The barbers are pretty skilled as they do not use any clipper guards while cutting. They also have a vacuum system that keeps most if the hair off you, which is really good if you are on the run. If you like a no nonsense place without a lot of chatter, with plenty of reading material, this is great. I would recommend giving it a try. read more

Great place for men's haircuts, shaves, or trims. Every time I've come here I've been greeted warmly and waited no more than 10 minutes. The two guys do a great job and I've never had any complaints. $16 for a haircut is very affordable for the neighborhood that Jim's is located in. You won't find any fancy bells and whistles here but the barbers get the job done. The first time I've ever gotten a compliment on my hair was after a hair cut here. Great place. Very clean and updated looking, not rundown and antiquated like a lot of barber shops around the area. Phang greets customers with a friendly hello. I've only been once but Phang gave me exactly what I wanted. I would give them 5 stars but he cut just a little higher around one ear than the other. It wasn't too noticeable though. And he seems to take great care in cutting, like an artist. Definitely more effort and care put into it than I've received from any of the stylists at Supercuts and maybe even as much attention as stylists at pricier salons. For $16, it can't be beat. They seem to have a lot of regular customers, so that's a good sign too. I don't know what the other reviewers mean when they say they have a vacuum system to keep the hair off. They didn't seem to have any vacuum system. And while Phang does take the time to use a brush and hairdryer to get the hairs off, I still had hairs on my face, neck and in the rest of my hair when I left. But that's not a knock, that's pretty much inevitable when getting a haircut. read more

Too often barbers talk non-stop; however at Jim's, Thang is so quiet and calm, I actually have taken naps durring my cuts only to awake and find exactly what I want. Great place for a quick haircut (Friday at noon). Barber is open to improvement if you notice a mistake. I have thin hair so I know mistakes are easily made so I make sure the clippers aren't being used heavily. As long as you make sure you communicate what you want and it's not too detailed it can be done. Also there was only 1 barber at my time of arrival. I don't know if there's more, also there are only 2 seats so most likely 2 barbers. read more

I've been going to Jim's since it first open, which I'm guessing was over 15 years ago. Vihn took over the barbershop from Jim about a year or so after it opened and I've yet to find a better barbershop to this day, even at times when I've been out of the area. Vihn's brother Thang came on-board probably 10+ years ago and he gives a great haircut as well. Vihn has been out for the last year or so and Thang's wife has come on-board now to help out. She too gives a great haircut and I have often had her cut my hair since Vihn's been out. I generally don't do writeups on yelp, but saw the yelp sticker on the door and felt it necessary to give them the praise they deserve. I would highly recommend them for a men's haircut at just $15. Just tell them how you want it cut the first time and you can expect it the same way ever time unless you tell them otherwise. read more
