I'm a new patient and this was the first time I visited Dr. Liu's medical facility. Before I can enter the building, there was a lady who greeted me and asked Covid questions. Then gave me a disposal mask that she asked me to wear solo or with the mask I already had on. Then I went to Dr. Liu's office. Not quite busy but greeted cordially by the front office ladies. They game forms to complete because I'm a new patient. Not even 5 minutes later, they called me in to see the doctor. Wow ! No wait time. I didn't even get to complete the forms and I'm a fast writer. Anyways, I say Dr. Liu pretty quick and I just loved her positive energy and smiles behind that mask! She did a physical assessment of my right foot, asked me questions on when, how and what. Then she gave me a clear explanation of why I was having the pain. She educated or laid out three options of treatment and allowed me to make the decision. I ended with cortisone shots. She explained side effects and what I can expect. She still encouraged me to consider the two options to help with the pain and healing. She's super amazing!!!!! If you are having or have foot problems, see Dr. Liu. Dr. Sung is super knowledgeable, gave thorough recommendations, described cause and effects of conditions, and explained how my insurance worked in a clear/concise manner. I really appreciate how he took his time. However, appointment times are somewhat unpredictable in terms of when you'd see the doctor. He has stellar reviews. And I immediately understood why: he came himself to let me in the side gate next to the handicapped spot. He was surprised to see me with only one shoe. I explained that the pain was so severe that I could not get a shoe on my left foot and was wearing a Bomba sock instead. But from the moment I encountered the staff my " appointment " for which I had waited THREE WEEKS was a travesty. They had no record of my appointment (which had been made directly by my insurance company) nor could they find the materials I had texted to the office at their instruction 3 weeks earlier. It turns out, after a very unpleasant exchange that I had " texted " to their email address. They did, in fact, have it. Calls were made to the Medical group at UCLA (not the people who could help me) and finally I myself called the line reserved for Prestige plan patients (we pay a modest fee to the medical group to have help navigating the complex health system). Without reviewing my extensive records the representative (Brittany) could not help me immediately. I asked for a supervisor (Patricia) who for obvious reasons was apologetic but also unable to help. Since the staff had treated me like a criminal in the office--no appointment, no insurance, no right to be there (could it have been that they assumed only a homeless person would walk around with one shoe and one sock) I decided to leave and call my insurance company from home. Dr. Avakian, who had heard the entire saga from his office, followed me out to the street to apologize. He seems like a kind and competent man. But his staff is rude and careless. At home I was able to reach my regular navigator, Andrea, but my appointment in Westwood is not until January 2! By then my ties will either have healed or dropped off. This is the fault of modern healthcare not Dr. Avakian.
