a hand holding a sub sandwich

The sandwiches here are better than subway, quiznos, togos, and penn station. Not only that, but they had mine done before I had even poured my drink. Excellent service, excellent food.

Good subs, great bread. A little pricier than other sub shops, but worth it. I love the humorous, and cocky atmosphere.

Then, as I bit into my french fries, I felt something cold and sticky. I pulled out the french fry next to the one I ate and this is what I saw. Spit or not, that's disgusting. You don't do that to a customer regardless, but ESPECIALLY not when we are in the middle of a pandemic. You have to be straight up evil for that. So, my chance to indulge and celebrate meant there's only one place....Taco Casita. It amazes me the different personalities which patronize. While waiting on my food to be prepared, I just kept scanning the dining room. There was a father with his 7-8 year old daughter. She was giddy eating chips and cheese. The father was chowing down. Another corner had a college age couple enjoying conversation whilst nibbling their food. There was a clean cut family of 6 on some tables. A fellow walked in wearing a muscle shirt of some sort. Another customer appeared like a weary Fed Ex driver getting Carryout. My Red (for Ed) sweatshirt kinda stood out. Almost everyone in there had one mission...to eat some cheap Mexican food and get their tummies full. Personally, it cleanses the sinuses for me. Some might say it will do other sorts of body cleanses! It's always a cheap spot to grab some grub that you know the flavor. It's not fancy. But good to eat.

I called at least 6 times and left 2 messages but got nowhere, so I called my husband to see what he wanted to do. He called back and said he had gotten through and I was to call them and place the order. I did so with a boy who sounded as if I were bothering him. My husband arrived home with the three sandwiches and passed them around. My daughter was to have had a philly cheesesteak on wheat bread and received white bread. I was to receive a philly cheese steak with lettuce. tomatoes ,onions and mayo and my husband was to have a philly cheese steak with everything except hot peppers. Neither of our sandwiches was correct. By this time, we were all frustrated. I called the store to complain to the manager and was told by the same bored silly employee, or possibly another, that she was in the bathroom. I told him I would wait. A girl came to the phone and identified herself as the supervisor, Zaid Jabur. I told her I simply wanted to express my dissatisfaction and when she had no apology or explanation, I asked for a contact email or phone number for her superior. She said she could not give this information out. I told her I did not want the order corrected or credited to our account, neither of which she had offered to do. I simply told her that I would not be returning to this store again and would be contacting someone about this poor service. The worst thing about this whole experience was the bad taste it left in my mouth. It was like dealing with silly teenagers who could not care less about the customer, the business , or the ruining of a dining experience ; worse yet, it was as if these jejune little nincompoops who work at this store were snickering behind their hands at having gotten away with doing as little as they could to do a poor job. If I did speak to the store owner - Zaid Jabur ( who is listed in this website as the supervisor and owner,) then he/she needs to rethink his/her career choice. I will be telling this tale and advising people that if they want good food, good service, or good manners, then Penn Station East in Terre Haute is not the place to go.

Let's start with the Pepsi machine, a clump fell out of the nozzle, so that tells me they don't clean it regularly. I got sweet tea instead and it just tasted off. The bread was hard on the ends. I got the 12" but lost about 3-4" to some non eatable bread. I got to the register to pay. I had $15 in my hand thinking this should cover it... NOPE! $21.60 for a 12" cold sub and a drink... ouch! Way over priced. Never again. Now I know why I haven't stopped in. Seriously, a steak at Texas Roadhouse is cheaper.

The restaurant smells of bread and soup as soon as you walk in. This is one of those places that you know is actually handmade as soon as it gets put down in front of you. We all ordered half soup/half sandwich meal. But the portions were huge, honestly. We could have shared. I got the lemon pepper chicken sandwich with chicken rice soup, both were actually incredible. My companions got the Reuben and pasta salad, and the sweet potato soup with turkey Reuben. Everything was great. The sweet potato soup is just that, very sweet, molasses flavor - might not be for everyone. The woman that took our order was very kind She shared some knowledge of their breads with us and even gave us a free load of sourdough to take home. They have many different types of breads, rolls, pastries etc available at the counter for pickup, anytime. Many, if not most, of the menu is turkey. We had one person that didn't eat turkey and specifically ordered the Reuben without turkey. The kitchen ran out of pastrami and put turkey on his sandwich. When she told him about the change, and he mentioned not liking turkey, she said well it's actually chicken anyhow. This was really confusing. He took it off and enjoyed the sandwich, but they should be cautious of changing ingredients without asking because of allergies and preferences. The restaurant is very small, with a few tables for dine in. There is no restroom.

I was intrigued by Oy Vey from the very start. I'd never been to a Jewish restaurant before, and…read morewanted to see what flavors I could discover. After eating here, I realized that I had completely underestimated this particular cuisine. The title of this restaurant may be alarming at first, but believe me, "oy vey" will be the last thing you say after tasting these delicious dishes. My family and I got two Reubens, Chicken and Rice soup, Borscht soup, Chicken Shawarma, South African Sweet Potato stew, baklava, and latkes all for about 59 bucks. And pretty much everything was homemade. Because of the great quality and quantity of all these items, I ended up stuffed and satisfied. We start off with their Reuben. I had heard much about this dish from other reviews, and it definitely did not disappoint. The corned beef was well-seasoned, and the sauerkraut was tangy and fresh. The Chicken and Rice soup was good, but could have used a little bit more seasoning. This is compared to the other items, though, so the expectation might have been set too high for this soup. Unlike the Chicken and Rice soup, the Borscht soup was firing up my taste buds with its deep tangy flavor. This dish is vegan, but Oy Vey definitely didn't compromise the flavor due to that classification. And along with the soup came a few pieces of a homemade flatbread that was soft and delicious as well. The Chicken Shawarma was pretty good. Again, the flavor was just a little lacking when compared to some of the other dishes. None of this is enough to take away from my 5-star rating, though. These are just little things that I think could be improved upon. I had the South African sweet potato stew as a side to my Reuben, and wow, was it good. The sweet potato blended perfectly with the mix of spices. This may have been the most flavorful stew I have ever eaten. Now, before I talk about this baklava, I ask you to erase anything you seemingly already know about Greek honey baklava from your mind, because that's not what this is. This baklava was entirely different, and even more scrumptious, in my opinion. Instead of your classic honey topping, this baklava was smothered in a cinnamon sauce. Like I said, a completely different experience, but one that was great in its own way. Last, but definitely not least, we have the latkes. These small, round potato pancakes were also different from the latkes I knew. And again, they were just as good, if not better. They sort of reminded me of fried mashed potatoes. There was also a side of applesauce that came with the order for dipping. The applesauce was also delicious. All in all, our experience at Oy Vey was delectable and filling. Though improvements could be made on some select items, Oy Vey really brings the flavor! So the next time you're in or around Terra Haute, stop by. Your taste buds will be very glad you did!
