The Lemon & Herb Baked Fish was so flavorful and juicy. I tried a Deep Fried Mars Bar for the first time and loved it (I don't know what it reminds me of, but it's crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, and hot enough to burn the top of your mouth). The star was definitely the Breaded Haddock. I've had fish and chips around the UK for much cheaper, but at a slightly higher price point you get a perfectly crispy piece of fish with double-fried chips. It's really more about the experience of being in a posh fish shop. It's packed with tourists, so you'll be handed a map of the city at the end -- which I found to be pretty funny given I was living in Edinburgh at the time and came with another local. But it's charming and certainly worth a visit.

There are a surprising number of culinary offerings for a town of merely 8,000, not the least of which is The Cross Keys restaurant connected to a hotel of the same name. As one of the most popular eateries in town, you'll find a bustling crowd at suppertime. There is no indication of how to proceed once you enter the restaurant, so if you're not from here there is a system. Seat yourself, grab a menu and decide what to order. Have someone in your group remain at the table, note your table number, walk to the bar, and place your order followed by table number. Despite a packed house, the food arrived quickly. The large mixed grill is a manly portion of various meats, including 2 cuts of pork, a thick ham, a small steak, 2 sausages, a fried egg, onion rings, and steak fries (what they call chips in the UK). The steak was tough and the ham was average, but the pork was delicious and so were the onion rings. They have a pretty good fish and chips here and good chicken fingers as well. We'd love to come back and try the ice cream sandwich for dessert! If you're out in this rural area of Scottish countryside and looking for a decent meal, Cross Keys will definitely suffice.

Even had to wipe down table myself as they couldn't be bothered. Whole place smelt of dirty carpets. Had to get a refund which they seemed to be experts at. No ambience no background music. Had to hunt out our own condiments as not offered or shown where they were. Disgracefull place. Will never go here again.

Despite there being a perfectly ok chip shop literally across the road from our house it was always worth jumping in the car to get a proper fish supper from Mackays. When I was living at home the shop was further along the high street but this location (the old Co-op) is perfect for a fish and chip shop and cafe. The take away counter faces the high street and in the back heading out to the sea wall is the cafe. They even have picnic tables looking out over the sea with parasols to save you from seagulls diving bombing your chips. You can always spot a tourist by the nonchalant way they assume they can eat their chips walking along the sea wall, locals know this is the fastest way to loose your chips and risk being pooed on! Anyone who has been there will tell you that a present from a seagull is not lucky, they are massive birds with a fish based diet. Just sit under the umbrellas please! G and I had abandoned the girls with my mum and were working on the rule that calories consumed more than 50 miles from your home address really don't count so both ordered fish suppers to go. We sat at the picnic tables laughing at the tourists fending off seagull attacks and tucked into the best fish and chips ever. The chips are perfect mainly chunky, light and fluffy but with just enough wee crispy ones mixed through to keep everyone happy. But the reason you come to a fishing town to eat fish and chips isn't the chips! The fish here is spectacular. Fresh, meaty, flaky perfection encased in the most spectacularly crisp gold batter. I'm salivating just typing this. They make their own ice-cream and I have only ever heard really good things about it, am pretty sure it wins awards. But I just come for fish and chips. The only downside is that it ruins you so that no other fish supper will ever satisfy again, to be honest I'd still do it.
