The servers were so accommodating and treated us amazingly! Great for a traditional fish, chips and pint. Ambiance was fun dining with trendy music playing.
We had a very nice lunch here. We got here about 11:45 AM and like 20 minutes later the place was absolutely jammed so if you don't wanna wait get here a little before noon at the latest. My husband had their fish and chips and I had their English meat pie, which was quite good. The service was spot on and they only take tap so cash won't work here. The place is large enough to handle a fair amount of people and although it's a bit of a tourist trap it was a nice stop for lunch. A little pricey, but overall, we enjoyed our lunch and had fantastic service.
I usually avoid restaurants in touristy areas, and despite being on the tourist-congested Victoria Street, I had to stop into Bertie's on a friend's recommendation (and was surprised by how much I liked it!). The Lemon & Herb Baked Fish was so flavorful and juicy. I tried a Deep Fried Mars Bar for the first time and loved it (I don't know what it reminds me of, but it's crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, and hot enough to burn the top of your mouth). The star was definitely the Breaded Haddock. I've had fish and chips around the UK for much cheaper, but at a slightly higher price point you get a perfectly crispy piece of fish with double-fried chips. It's really more about the experience of being in a posh fish shop. It's packed with tourists, so you'll be handed a map of the city at the end -- which I found to be pretty funny given I was living in Edinburgh at the time and came with another local. But it's charming and certainly worth a visit.
Loved it. Went to scotland for a short trip. And I had to know about the raving on fish & chips. Bertie's was conveniently located around victoria st, and it was a huge place with 2 floors. We ordered a salad and the classic fish & chips for a snack. The portion of the fish was huge! Chips were great. Loved that they put us in a good seat with a view.
Fun looking place in the main touristy area of Edinburgh Old Town! I opted with the walk up take away option was was very convenient as you can get things ala cart. The Battered haddock was a bit on the dry side but had good batter. Grilled sausages were nice snappy with sort of a fruity schmear for dipping. The fried calamari was a little on the soggy side but had good flavor. I think I'll opt for the in dining experience next time!
We decided to have fish & chips for our first night in Edinburgh. Why not have some proper ones? I actually bookmarked this place because of the awesome menu items. It also happens to be on the most touristy street in the city. But don't let that scare you off. The battered fish is very good here. It was the twice-cooked chips that didn't live up to the hype. I think the sweet potato fries would have been a better choice. Their World Famous Battered Haddock is the way to go here. It's what they are known for. We loved the light & crispy batter. The haddock was white & tender. That was the high point of our meal. The chips were hard and lukewarm. We didn't say anything because there was no way we'd be able to eat them all even if they brought out a fresher batch. It's just a side item that we didn't need anyway. I'd usually go for mushy peas or onion rings, but I think it would have been an extra charge to get them. We did share a Deep Fried Mars Bar. It was a rich & delicious treat. A great sweet ending to a very nice meal. The décor and atmosphere is wonderful here. There's a big red bow above the entrance with a takeaway counter at the ground level. You'll see the Christmas tree on the second level as you're heading up to the restaurant. The bar & restaurant on the next 2 floors are bright & spacious with lots of seating options. The service was great as well. Noah made it a nice experience. We would definitely visit again if ever in Edinburgh.
This place offers a silly amount of dishes/drinks, but I loved all of them! Huge seating area (will never have to wait for a table) and fish and chips were very good and unique if you like a more Smokey flavor. Also thought we'd try the haggis spring rolls and macaroni cheese croquettes which were both great. Maybe next time I'll try the fried mars bar
Looking for fish and chips and Berthies comes up again and again. It was located in the old town and on a busy tourist street. So I was skeptical at first. I was seated promptly despite no reservations. Ordered their famous battered fish. Haddock is used instead of cod. Batter was light and crispy. Fries/chips were ok. Served with tartar but table has ketchup, vinegar etc. staff were friendly and quick. Take note that there is auto service charge added. Price is reasonable given location. Locations is convenient when exploring the old town and in need of a nice respite from the cold (I was here in January )
The fish and chips here are delicious and the batter is airy and super crispy!! Truly recommend coming here. Also beware the portion is huge lol. We also ordered the onions rings and they were soo good!!! People were nice our beer took a while to come out but the waiter apologized and brought it out shortly after that.
I have never had a fish flake like this. It was so mild in flavor, crunchy exterior, not a heavy dense batter that ruins your day from being so strong. It was just light, airy, and truly magnificent. I think about this often. The fries TASTED golden. Dipped in the sauces- both the fish and chips were amazing! Will return when I go back to Edinburgh. Our waiter was kind and gave his recommendations as well! (Also me and my friend split this and it was plenty)
The fish and chips was excellent and our waitress Sylvia was beyond fabulous! If you're ever in Edinburgh, this is a must visit!
Single traveler. This is a very warm, welcoming place. I did not love that they put me upstairs near the curtain where the staff stops to eat, but other than that I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. Service was good, the fish and chips dish was quite nice and I'm sorry I did not buy a tee shirt because Berties Proper seems like a place you need to be at least once when you're in Edinburgh. It was recommended to me by two different hotels in the area and I think they knew it would be a comfortable, fun atmosphere for me eating alone.
I made reservations after hearing my tour guide recommend it and seeing it the fish and chips are cooked in tallow. So grateful I made reservations as it was quite busy and a good crowd waiting for a spot. Service was kind and friendly. Our food came out quickly. The fish and chips were delightful. The fish was crispy and flavorful. The mushy pea side can be shared by two, a good complement to the fries. I appreciate seeing on the chalkboard where the ingredients came from, largely regionally. Don't let the tourist area of Victoria Street deter you, it's quite the legitimate spot!

We visited after seeing a video from a travel blogger on YouTube, and we really appreciate her recommendation. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere, delicious food, and prompt, friendly service. Battered haddock: Easily the best fish & chips I've ever eaten, beating out places I've tried in both London and Australia. The batter was super crispy and non-greasy, the fish was thick and meaty, and the chips were cut to perfection. Mushy peas: not quite steamed peas, but not quite pea soup either. I liked them, though they felt a bit heavy for May and seem better suited for winter. Haggis: If you're sensitive to gamey flavors, run away from it. It was rich and deeply gamey, coated in a light batter. It came with homemade beetroot ketchup, apparently a UK staple, which complemented it nicely. Pickled onions: The only letdown of the meal. You just get two small, un-sliced onions that barely tasted pickled. All in all, definitely worth a visit if in Edinburgh. read more

Full disclosure: this review is written from a vegetarian perspective. I love going to places to get vegetarian versions of things to be able to have a similar experience to my carnivorous friends and family. Fish and Chips is one of those things I definitely miss from before I adopted this diet...So I was excited to see this very popular spot on Victoria Street offering a vegan fish and chips. We didn't have a reservation, but they were able to seat us right away at a table in their upstairs area...probably the least desirable table in the shop...between the bar prep area and the balcony...lots and lots of server traffic and stationing right near us. They do quite a lot of volume here, serving what they serve and located where they are...I think it showed a bit on their staff...I don't think our host or server smiled or seemed particularly happy to be there, and it showed. My wife really enjoyed the real fish she got, so if you're not a vegetarian, you may do well here. The vegan fish and chips were a bust. It was a soy (or some kind of textured protein) "fish" breaded (as opposed to battered like the real fish)...It definitely looked like they purchased these vegetarian patties elsewhere and fried them up when ordered. It's so easy to overcook faux-meats, and what I received was definitely fried too long...dense texture and the breadcrumbs coating was no where near as satisfying or tasty to eat or look at as the batter I saw on the fish. From researching this place ahead of time, it looks like their vegetarian option used to be eggplant battered like the real fish...I'm not an eggplant fan in terms of taste or texture, but the old pictures at least looked so much better than this vegan fish they brought me. Kudos to Berties for wanting to have a vegetarian option, but there are way better ways to go...If they want to do a faux-meat texture, they need to learn how to cook it properly so it retains the intended texture...something battered instead of breaded would give a much more "proper" experience...and if they want to go a vegetable route there are a handful of options to give a much more authentic texture than what they served (banana blossoms, hearts of palm, even a firm tofu would do a better job than what they served.) There are other vegetarian options on the menu, including vegan haggis and a vegetarian burger, so if you find yourself here and you're a vegetarian, you will not starve, and you have choices. Also worth mentioning if you're vegan, they also offered a vegan tartar sauce with the vegan fish and chips dish...so they have vegetarians in mind, which is nice. The chips not bad...but we've had better. Overall disappointed with what I got. There are a lot of opportunities to up the vegetarian fish and chips option...I hope they do so. read more

Absolutely wonderful Scottish dining experience! The fish and chips were excellent, nice and flaky, add some malt vinegar and mayonnaise for the chips, just fantastic. The restaurant is right in the heart of Edinburgh on a cobblestone street, really sets the mood. Group of (11) of us, seated and served with a smile. Our waitress was a joy! read more

Tasty fish and chips, excellent crunch and coverage-and service was great! Pass on the haggis egg rolls or add more haggis as it was lost in the interior. Offer more souvenirs at the external stall-I'd have purchased a hat but thought it would smell fried. read more

I think Bertie's was the place to go for fish and chips. It certainly was a tourist attraction. The fried fish was good. I did not think much of the French fries (chips). This place thrives on volume and service was just ok. But if you want that tourist ambiance and want a T-shirt this is a good place to go. read more

We decided to make a reservation and we were accommodated very fast at our table. Two of us got the fish & chip and full portion is quite bit (not only delicious); the other one of us got the cajun fish and it was the right amount of spiciness and a good portion as well. Then we had to try the deep fried Mars... it was so good that we have to try it at home as well. Service was top notch. read more
Vegan fish and chips! That's all I needed to know and I was on board. It seems like they recent revised the recipe, according to the menu and previous reviews, as my entree was a soy-based, breaded patty, fried to a crispy finish. It was deeply satisfying, somewhat like a mix between a chicken cutlet and a fish stick, made more convincing with a dip in tartar sauce. The mushy peas are simple but comforting, perfect for dreary weather. I also loved the beetroot ketchup, which had a nice sweetness without being sugary. Worth a visit, but don't forget to make reservations! They're madly popular, for good reason. read more

i could rave about this place for hours. stumbled into here with my friends on our week long trip. we were jet lagged and tired from a day of walking. this first thing was that they are three floors tall and include an elevator for accessibility. the second was that they had fully closed bathroom stalls, each equipped with a sink and were very clean. they also had an accessible AND gender neutral toilet. the overall vibe of the place was fun and they had a lot of space with many tables. for the food, they had a key with all possible allergens, and showed which foods included them or not. the first thing we were asked was if there were any allergies in the party. as someone with many allergies, this was amazing. the wait staff was wonderful and very friendly. the food came quick and was so delicious. we had a few drinks, i got the cider, and they were all so good. we have since then gone again during our week in edinburgh and i am so glad we did. read more

Best fish and chips we ate all trip The sticky toffee pudding was amazing and his a must order Alcohol selection was fantastic Haggis, sausage, steak pie was OK We were seated quickly and served quickly. Would definitely stop by if near museum mile and need a bite to eat. read more
We had just had fish and chips at our favorite place back in the states. The fish and chips were better at Bertie's. Such a light batter and perfectly cooked. I appreciate the chips (fries) are not salted to death like in the US. Our first time trying anything haggis and the haggis egg rolls here were delicious. If we ever come back to Scotland we're coming back to Bertie's. read more
The place is so cute. You walk in and they do reacted upstairs where we were seated immediately. My travel companion ordered a Sol beer and I had the rose' we shared a bottle of water. We shared the fish n chips which I must say is the best I've had so far in the UK. Absolutely delicately battered - light and airy and yet still hearty enough for us to share along with a side of mushy peas. The food was nice and hot and Everything was absolutely delightful. I would recommend this place and would lot be surprised if we returned tomorrow! Well done! read more

Someone wrote that this is best for big portions and not quality, I could not disagree any more. They are standard UK portions and the quality is outstanding for the burger and haddock and chips we had. Nice light tasting batter, tender fish, perfectly seasoned steak burger with a nice soft bun. The service was also 5 star with our server being super friendly and helpful. Do not miss this place when coming to Edinburgh, a must do! read more
Helpful and friendly staff, service all round was ok, some parts very fast, others slow. The food is good, the fish is the star of the show, obviously, but the chips could be better. 4/5 fish, 3/5 chips. The location is large and accommodating. Bertie's is worth a stop for sure but at peak dinner rush, the noise level is LOUD. read more
I am pretty blown away by how good the reviews are for Bertie's. Service was good and the place was very busy for lunch on a weekday, but there was nothing special about their food. We got the fish and chips and steak pie with mash. Fish and chips look picture perfect but tasted like nothing and chips also not even average. The steak pie tasted was cold in the middle and everything tasted like it was just a frozen meal from the grocery store. Probably the most disappointing meal we had on the entire trip read more

We stopped here after a long day of traveling to Edinburgh and it was exactly what we needed! The restaurant wasn't crowded, which made for a relaxing meal, and both the food and service were excellent. I had the steak pie and my husband ordered the classic fish and chips--both were absolutely delicious. We left full and happy! Definitely recommend giving this place a try. read more
